Safety results of intra-arterial stem cell clinical trial for stroke presented

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

Public release date: 11-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Deborah Mann Lake deborah.m.lake@uth.tmc.edu University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston HOUSTON (Oct. 11, 2012) Early results of a Phase II intra-arterial stem cell trial for ischemic stroke showed no adverse events associated with the first 10 patients, allowing investigators to expand the study to a targeted total of 100 patients. The results were presented today by Sean Savitz, M.D., professor of neurology and director of the Stroke Program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), at the 8th World Stroke Congress in Brasilia, Brazil. The trial is the only randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intra-arterial clinical trial in the world for ischemic stroke. It is studying the safety and efficacy of a regenerative therapy developed by Aldagen Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cytomedix, Inc., that uses a patient's own bone marrow stem cells, which can be administered between 13 and 19 days post-stroke. The therapy, called ALD-401, consists of stem cells that are identified using Aldagen's proprietary technology to isolate cells that express high levels of an enzyme that serves as a marker of stem cells. Pre-clinical studies found that these cells enhance recovery after … Continue reading

First Patient Treated in Cytori’s U.S. Cell Therapy Heart Failure Trial

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

SAN DIEGO & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cytori Therapeutics (CYTX) announced the initiation of the FDA approved ATHENA clinical trial to investigate Cytoris cell therapy in patients who suffer from a severe form of refractory (untreatable) heart failure due to chronic myocardial ischemia. Cytoris cell therapy is based on a patients own adipose-derived stem and regenerative cells (ADRCs) processed by the Companys proprietary Celution System technology, making this the first FDA approved trial in the U.S. to evaluate ADRCs for cardiovascular disease. This first patient was treated by co-principal investigator Timothy Henry, M.D., Director of Research, at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation in September and has undergone a seven day follow-up assessment. More details on the ATHENA trial may be found at http://www.theathenatrial.com. Patients with refractory heart failure have no options except for heart transplant, for which there are few hearts available, said Dr. Henry. Cell therapy such as Cytoris has the potential to delay, halt, or even reverse this progression. We believe this is accomplished by the cells ability to promote angiogenesis and regulate the immune response to help revive damaged tissue that is alive yet not necessarily contributing to its fullest capacity toward the pumping ability of the heart. ATHENA … Continue reading

Prescriptions can help many kids with ADHD

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

Re "ADHD drugs for lagging students" (Page A1, Oct. 9): The Bee article about ADHD treatment did not represent the standard of care provided by pediatricians and child psychiatrists treating this disorder. First of all, there are specific criteria for the diagnosis and treatment for ADHD. Up to 20 percent of school age children have this condition. One thing that was not pointed out was that this is spectrum disorder; i.e., it ranges from mild to profound in severity. The milder forms clearly respond to accommodations in the classroom, behavior modification and counseling. However, many children suffering from ADHD have more severe disability and it can profoundly affect school performance and many other aspects of the childs development. It is these children who need and respond so well to stimulant medication. Children with mild-moderate ADHD and learning disorders could benefit from smaller class sizes and many of these could be on less or no medication if our class room sizes were 10-20, but that is not the reality of our current fiscal crisis in education. Larger class room sizes does mean more children with less severe ADHD need medication because there is more distractions and less availability of accommodations available. … Continue reading

Lake County drug counselor draws from personal experience

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

LAKE COUNTY -- The struggle with addiction can be difficult, but sometimes help can come from someone who's been there already. "For me, the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life was get clean and sober," drug and alcohol counselor Wayne M. Anderson said. "I wanted to help people because the disease of addictions is at epidemic proportion," Anderson, 64, has worked in the field for about 10 years. He draws from the knowledge he gained during his battle with dependency in order to help others in similar situations. "I was heavily into methamphetamine and I was selling methamphetamine," the Soda Bay resident said, reflecting on his 1987 narcotics arrest in Lake County. "Obviously, I sold to law enforcement, and I wasn't aware of it at the time." Anderson spent a little more than two years in state prison after his conviction, but his issues with drugs continued once he went back on the streets. "After I got released out of prison, I had two violations for dirty tests and I was still using. Then I got arrested again," he said. That May 30, 1991 arrest occurred four days before his son was born, which helped motivate … Continue reading

Experimental Drugs Offer Hope in Prevention of Alzheimer’s Onset

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

According to the Alzheimers Association, an estimated 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimers disease. And the number of people with the disease will increase each year as the proportion of the U.S. population over age 65 continues to growand its predicated it will escalate rapidly as the baby boom generation ages. Now for some potentially good news. Scientists have selected three different types of Alzheimers drugs to be tested in the first large-scale international attempt to prevent the disease in people who are otherwise doomed to get it, reports The New York Times. MORE: Can Skipping Processed Foods Prevent Alzheimer's? The Times explains that, Most of the test subjects will have no symptoms . . . but they would be expected to start showing signs of problems with memory and thinking within five years unless the drugs work. The hope is that by intervening early, the disease might be headed off. Another study starting next year involves an extended family in Colombia that shares the same mutation. Anyone who inherits that mutated gene gets Alzheimers disease. A third study will involve people in the United States age 70 and older who seem perfectly healthy and who do not have … Continue reading

Drugs, gun found on rapper Nelly's bus at Texas checkpoint

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Authorities discovered marijuana, heroin and a loaded gun on Grammy-winning rapper Nelly's tour bus during a routine stop at a Border Patrol checkpoint in West Texas, law enforcement officials said on Thursday. A member of the singer's entourage took responsibility for the items and was arrested after the search on Wednesday evening, while others on the bus including Nelly were released, officials said. "It is my understanding a member of my staff made an unfortunate decision to bring unlawful materials onto our tour bus that resulted in his arrest," Nelly said in a statement on Thursday. "Neither I nor anyone else on the tour bus was aware of his decision to bring these on board." The incident took place at the same checkpoint where singers Willie Nelson and Fiona Apple, rapper Snoop Dogg and actor Armand Hammer have been stopped for possession of controlled substances. The checkpoint, which is not on the border, is used by the Border Patrol to check the citizenship status of motorists on Interstate 10. A spokesman for the Hudspeth County sheriff said the tour bus had pulled into the Border Patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, about 90 miles east of … Continue reading

Tanzania probes fake HIV drugs

Posted: Published on October 12th, 2012

11 October 2012 Last updated at 14:37 ET An investigation into the circulation of fake HIV drugs in Tanzania could lead to criminal prosecutions, the health minister has told the BBC. Dr Hussein Mwinyi has suspended three top officials and stopped local production of the anti-retrovirals (ARVs) while the probe takes place. He told the BBC Swahili Service he would "not allow people to play around with the lives of Tanzanians". He said the police force and security services were involved in the probe. Analysts say there is concern about the quality of locally made drugs given widespread corruption in political circles in the East Africa nation. Earlier this year, a body overseeing public finances exposed rampant misuse of public funds, including in the health ministry. The scandal led to the sacking of seven ministers. Dr Mwinyi said the health ministry was alerted in August to problems with a batch of ARV drugs at the Tarime District Hospital. The batch, produced by the Tanzania Pharmaceutical Industry (TPI), was immediately recalled and subjected to further testing, which revealed that it was sub-standard. The officials who were suspended on Wednesday work at the Medical Stores Department (MSD) and the production of all … Continue reading
