Pharmacy linked to outbreak issues wide recall

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) The pharmacy that distributed a steroid linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis has issued a voluntary recall of all of its products, calling the move a precautionary measure. The New England Compounding Center announced the recall Saturday. The company said in a news release that the move was taken out of an abundance of caution because of the risk of contamination. It says there is no indication that any other products have been contaminated. The Food and Drug Administration had previously told health professionals not to use any products distributed by the center. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted updated figures to its website Sunday showing there are 91 confirmed cases of the rare form of fungal meningitis. The outbreak spans nine states and has killed at least seven people. The states with reported cases are: Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. The steroid linked to the outbreak had already been recalled, and health officials have been scrambling to notify anyone who may have received an injection of it. The Massachusetts pharmacy that made it has said it is cooperating with investigators. It is not yet known exactly how many … Continue reading

Canadian-made drug may protect brain from stroke: study

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

CTVNews.ca Staff Published Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 6:35PM EDT Last Updated Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 8:32PM EDT A Canadian-made drug may decrease the risk of stroke by making the brain more resilient to a lack of oxygen, according to a new study. The study showed that patients who were given the drug NA-1 saw significantly fewer brain lesions following brain surgery -- which carries a risk of stroke -- compared to a placebo group. Researchers also found that the drug was safe, with just two incidents of low blood pressure in the group that received the treatment. The findings were published Sunday in the international journal The Lancet Neurology. Lead study author Michael Hill of the University of Calgarys Hotchkiss Brain Institute of Canada, said NA-1 provided brain surgery patients with tissue neuroprotection, meaning brain cells were protected during surgery, when there is restricted blood flow to the brain. He said the drug was shown to reduce tissue damage in patients who suffered small strokes after operations to repair brain aneurysms. Its a major unmet need in stroke treatment, Hill said in a news release. Dr. Markku Kaste of Helsinki University Central Hospital in Finland said the drug could be … Continue reading

New drug lowers stroke risk after surgery

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

Their results, published in the Lancet journal, showed that those who were given the drug rather than a placebo had an average of seven lesions, or damaged sites, compared with 12 in those given a placebo. There was no significant difference in the overall size of the damaged area, but this may have been because there were too few patients to notice a clear difference. Prof Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said the treatment could have a major impact on patients undergoing a host pf procedures, if its benefits are proven in further studies. He said: "The important thing is that this is just one procedure in which we know some brain damage is caused, so it is a good one in which to test the drug. "If it turns out that this protects the brain, we could use it on umpteen procedures on the brain, so it might have a much broader umpact than just these patients." Prof Michael Hill of the University of Calgary, who led the study, said safe drugs to protect the brain during operations that restrict blood flow to the brain was a "major unmet need in stroke treatment". "Our research, … Continue reading

Drug 'may' prevent stroke damage

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

7 October 2012 Last updated at 20:40 ET It may be possible to use a drug to prevent some of the lasting and crippling damage caused by a stroke, according to doctors in the US and Canada. A safety trial, published in the Lancet Neurology medical journal, suggested the chemical NA-1 was safe to use. The study on 185 people also hinted that patients given the drug developed fewer regions of damaged brain tissue. The Stroke Association said that it was promising, but needed more research. Tests in primates had suggested NA-1 prevented brain cells dying when a stroke starved them of oxygen. A small trial was set up at 14 hospitals in the US and Canada. Patients who took part were having an operation to repair a brain aneurysm, a weakened blood vessel which could rupture, are at increased risk of a stroke. Ninety-two people had the drug injected into a vein, while another 93 were injected with salty water. The doctors concluded that NA-1 was safe, with only two patients having mild side effects. Dan Savage: “It was going to be a joke”

DanSavageis a public-radio personality, a leading anti-bullying activist, a star of MTV and a prominent tormentor of Republicans. But in the beginning he was a sex columnist. His column SavageLove made its debut in the first issue of the Stranger, the Seattle alt-weekly, on Sept. 23, 1991, and soon would change the world of sex advice a world dominated, at the time, by the relatively timid Dr. Ruth and the once-popular Ask Isadora. Now that SavageLove is over 20 years old, its worth looking back at what the self-described faggot from Seattle has wrought. At the beginning, it was going to be a joke,Savagetells me, when I visit him in Seattle. Our day-long conversation has moved from his office at the Stranger, where he sits at Ann Landers old desk, which he bought at auction, to the cafe in the back of the Elliott Bay Book Co., a Seattle institution where other customers nod atSavagehopefully, hoping he will recognize them. We werent getting paid. I was going to do this as a lark for a few months then move back to Berlin where he had been living with his boyfriend. In the first column, the readers letters were written by colleagues … Continue reading

Yorkville Pharmacy celebrates 10 years in business

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2012

When Deborah Bowers worked as a retail pharmacist, I was miserable. The pace at which she was required to work meant she didnt have the time to know the patrons. Now, her patrons, know the 35-year-old Bowers, as well as they know her children, six-year-old Jordan and three and one-half-year-old Brooklyn Grace. The difference? Bowers went for working for someone to being the boss. She operates Yorkville Pharmacy on Liberty Street in York. The pharmacy is celebrating its 10th year in business, recently offering breakfast, hotdogs and popcorn and other free gifts to mark its anniversary. This is more than a just a business, she said. Hopefully we are building a legacy. Yorkville Pharmacy employs five staff in addition to Bowers. Bowers said computers will check to see if prescribed drugs will interact with each other. That helps the pharmacist, she said, but there is no computer that replace the one-on-one conversations with patients. The pharmacy works with doctors and insurance companies to make sure patients get the drugs they need, she said. I happy to help people find the cheaper alternatives, for drugs, such as using generics rather than more expensive name brands. Here is the original post: Yorkville … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Medication blamed for impulse shopping

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2012

Q: Mirapex is a medicine prescribed for Parkinson's disease and restless leg syndrome. I read online that this medication can promote compulsive behaviors such as shopping, porn, sex, gambling and eating. Some of these compulsions have resulted in divorce or bankruptcy. I myself developed a compulsion for buying trinkets on eBay, to the tune of $10,000 on my credit card. Warn people that if a new compulsion crops up, they should check with the pharmacist or doctor to find out if it could be caused by medication. A: Most people can't imagine that a drug could cause someone to go on a shopping binge or engage in behavior such as compulsive eating or sex. Nevertheless, this has been documented as a side effect of medicines such as Mirapex and Requip. The official prescribing information for such drugs notes that patients and their families should be warned about the possibility of intense, uncontrollable urges. Q: Ambien frightens me. I have seen two people very close to me do crazy things while on the drug and then go back to sleep and not remember what they did. My mother found herself in her nightgown, standing in a line at Subway, ordering a … Continue reading

Genetic variants' role in increasing Parkinson's disease risk investigated

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Oct. 5, 2012) Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) investigators have led the first genome-wide evaluation of genetic variants associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). The study, which is published online in PLOS ONE, points to the involvement of specific genes and alterations in their expression as influencing the risk for developing PD. Jeanne Latourelle, DSc, assistant professor of neurology at BUSM, served as the study's lead author and Richard H. Myers, PhD, professor of neurology at BUSM, served as the study's principal investigator and senior author. A recent paper by the PD Genome Wide Association Study Consortium (PDGC) confirmed that an increased risk for PD was seen in individuals with genetic variants in or near the genes SNCA, MAPT, GAK/DGKQ, HLA and RIT2, but the mechanism behind the increased risk was not determined. "One possible effect of the variants would be to change the manner in which a gene is expressed in the brains, leading to increased risk of PD," said Latourelle. To investigate the theory, the researchers examined the relationship between PD-associated genetic variants and levels of gene expression in brain samples from the frontal cortex of 26 samples with known PD and 24 neurologically healthy control samples. … Continue reading

Church raising funds for pastor's cancer treatment

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

When modern medicine is unsuccessful in curing diseases, some seek alternative treatments. For Pastor Charles Daugherty, that time has come. After a year-long battle with multiple myeloma, during which time he has undergone chemotherapy, radiation and stem cell treatment, and then diagnosed with a second type of cancer, liposarcoma, he has decided to try something different. I dont have anything to lose from trying, he said. According to the American Cancer Society, normal plasma cells are found in the blood marrow and are a part of the bodys immune system, which is made up of several types of cells, working to fight off infections. One of these types of cells, B cells, transform into plasma in response to infections. When they grow out of control, a tumor is formed. When more than one tumor grows, it is called multiple myeloma. While the outcomes for those with multiple myeloma have gotten better in recent years, the reality, according to the American Cancer Society, is that the disease never really goes away for most patients. Its considered terminal. Its considered fatal, Daugherty said. Since February 2011, the pastor has undergone cancer and radiation treatments. Daugherty also had a stem cell transplant, which … Continue reading
