Scientists Uncover Genetic Link for Uterine Fibroids

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

THURSDAY, Oct. 4 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers who discovered genetic risk factors linked to uterine fibroids in white women say their findings will lead to new screening and treatment methods for the condition. Uterine fibroids are the most common type of pelvic tumor in women -- they occur in 75 percent of women of reproductive age -- and the leading cause of hysterectomy in the United States. Uterine fibroids can lead to abnormal vaginal bleeding, infertility, pelvic pain and pregnancy complications. Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston analyzed genetic data from more than 7,000 white women and identified variations in three genes that are significantly associated with uterine fibroids. One of these variations occurred in a gene called FASN, which encodes a protein called FAS (fatty acid synthase). Further investigation showed that FAS protein production was three times higher in uterine fibroid samples compared to normal tissue, according to the report published online Oct. 4 in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Overproduction of FAS protein occurs in various types of tumors and is believed to be important for tumor cell survival, the study authors pointed out in a hospital news release. "Our discovery foretells a path to … Continue reading

Fertility hope in stem cell eggs

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

Hopes of a cure for infertility in humans were raised Friday after Japanese stem cell researchers announced they had created viable eggs using normal cells from adult mice. The breakthrough raises the possibility that women who are unable to produce eggs naturally could have them created in a test tube from their own cells and then planted back into their body. A team at Kyoto University harvested stem cells from mice and altered a number of genes to create cells very similar to the primordial germ cells that generate sperm in men and oocytes -- or eggs -- in women. They then nurtured these with cells that would become ovaries and transplanted the mixture into living mice, where the cells matured into fully-grown oocytes. They extracted the matured oocytes, fertilised them in vitro -- in a test tube -- and implanted them into surrogate mother mice. The resulting mice pups were born healthy and were even able to reproduce once they matured. Writing in the US journal Science, which published the findings, research leader professor Michinori Saito said the work provided a promising basis for hope in reproductive medicine. "Our system serves as a robust foundation to investigate and further … Continue reading

A malaria patient of Hazaribagh got a free strip of 10 tablets from sadar hospital on September 29 with a rider ' it bore an expiry date of September 2012. After patient Ashok Kumar raised an alarm and bought the same medicine from a retail pharmacy, red-faced hospital authorities hastily arranged a new lot of medicines from Monday. The anti-malarial drug ' chloroquine phosphate ' costs only Rs 6 per strip of 10 tablets. That day, once he got the medicine, a shocked Ashok took it to the doctor who had prescribed it. Dr R.N. Singh asked him not to use it. Even district civil surgeon (CS) Vinay Kumar admitted to The Telegraph that the medicine should be used till September only. "It was by chance that I noticed the expiry date. I was shocked, given that malaria is rife here and the medicine is so common and cheap," he added. "When I showed the medicine to the doctor and the date embossed on the strip, he immediately asked me to throw it in the bin and buy the medicine from the retail market," Ashok, a resident of Okhni Mohalla, fumed. According to sadar hospital records, 13,08,000 tablets that had … Continue reading

18,000 Illegal Pharmacy Websites Shutdown

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

FDA takes action against thousands of illegal Internet pharmacies in international Operation Pangea V protect consumers from dangerous unapproved drugs The announcement takes place during the 5th annual International Internet Week of Action (IIWA), a global cooperative effort to combat the online sale and distribution of potentially counterfeit and illegal medical products. This years effort Operation Pangea V operated between Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 and resulted in the shutdown of more than 18,000 illegal pharmacy websites and the seizure of about $10.5 million worth of pharmaceuticals worldwide. The goal of this annual effort, which involved law enforcement, customs and regulatory authorities from 100 countries, is to identify producers and distributors of illegal pharmaceutical products and medical devices and remove these products from the supply chain. Last week, the FDA reinforced its online efforts with the launch of a national campaign to educate Americans about the risks of buying prescription medications over the Internet. BeSafeRx Know Your Online Pharmacy seeks to raise public awareness about the health risks of using fraudulent Internet pharmacies and what consumers can do to protect themselves. During Operation Pangea V, the FDA targeted websites selling unapproved and potentially dangerous medicines. In many cases, the medicines … Continue reading

Stem cells: of mice and women?

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

And rightly so: stem-cell scientists have derived many types of cells from stem-cell precursors, but have in the past struggled with sex cells. The research by a team at Kyoto University provides a powerful model into mammalian development and infertility, but it is still a long way off from being used in human therapy. Despite this fact, it did not stop the headlines in some of today's press screaming that infertile women could one day become pregnant by creating eggs from stem cells. Evelyn Telfer, a reproductive biologist at the University of Edinburgh, told me this study has no clinical application to humans whatsoever because the tissue used in this study were all foetal and not adult cells. Mitinori Saitou led a team using foetal mouse tissue from embryos or skin cells to create stem cells. Those stem cells were then genetically reprogrammed to become germ cells egg precursor cells. These were then given a cocktail of "factors" to support their growth into mature eggs. The eggs were fertilised by IVF in the lab and then implanted into surrogate mice. Three baby mice were born and grew into fertile adults. The fact that artificially manufactured eggs have gone on to … Continue reading

Multiple miRNA Markers Associated with Angiogenesis and Tissue Injury Repair Expressed in Cytori’s Cell Therapy

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cytori Therapeutics (CYTX) announced that three oral presentations related to its cell therapy are being presented today at the 10th annual International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Sciences meeting. The findings provide insights into the mechanisms-of-action for Cytoris cell therapy. One study identified high levels of micro-RNA (miRNA) markers in human tissue thought to play a role in the repair of tissue injury resulting from ischemia, or lack of blood flow. Two additional characterization and comparative analysis studies on human tissue reaffirmed cellular characteristics of Cytoris cell therapy and distinguished the safety, viability and cell make-up as compared to cell outputs derived from alternate approaches. Results from all three studies have important implications for how the cells repair injured tissue and on the safety and viability of cell-based treatments derived from adipose tissue, said John Fraser, Ph.D., Chief Scientist of Cytori Therapeutics. Mechanisms identified in our miRNA analysis are consistent with our prior clinical and preclinical data, which suggest these mechanisms include angiogenesis, immune-modulation, and remodeling and wound repair. The miRNA study provides baseline data, which we can apply to our U.S. ATHENA clinical trial in refractory heart failure patients and other activities including our recently announced … Continue reading

Snake venom may hold key to pain relief without side effects

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

Nobody wants to be bitten by a black mamba. One of the most dangerous snakes in the world, its venom can kill a person in less than half an hour. But a new study reports that there is something besides deadly toxin hidden inside the snake: a powerful painkiller that works as well as morphine but without the side effects. In the report, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers from France described two previously unknown pain-killing peptides extracted from the mamba toxin. They named the peptides mambalgins, in honor of the snake. The scientists were studying the relationship between snake venom and pain because previous research had shown that some types of venom bind directly to proteins embedded in nerve cells that cause pain when activated. These proteins, called ASICs, are commonly believed to play a central role in one of our pain pathways by causing certain groups of neurons to fire in response to a painful stimulus. While the previous studies had focused on snake venoms that activated ASICs, the authors of the new study found that the mambalgins actually inhibit the activity of the ASICs in mice -- meaning they shut down the pathway responsible for registering … Continue reading

Heroin bust signals growing problem in NKY

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

Heroin bust signals growing problem in NKY A large heroin bust this week in Florence is the latest sign of the spike in use of the drug in northern Kentucky. "We just talked about it at our last meeting with EMS coordinators, and everybody is seeing the same thing, a big increase in it," said Todd Schulkers, assistant chief of the Erlanger fire department. A half-kilo of the narcotic was seized from two Texas men by federal agents in the parking lot of Walmart on Houston Road, police said. Emergency responders said they regularly treat overdose victims at interstate exits, where addicts returning from buying the drug in Cincinnati stop to use the drug. "It's like they can't wait, so they pull off the exit, pull into a gas station or a restaurant and just shoot up right there," Schulkers said. Tom Garamy, a chemical dependency therapist with St. Elizabeth Hospitals, said more pain pill users are moving to heroin because changes to prescription drugs have made it more difficult for them to get high. Heroin dealers are now catering to what addicts want, he said. "Better quality, better purity, less expensive, and that's really why you're seeing so much … Continue reading
