Parents must have all the facts

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2012

Re: Side effects of ADHD drugs shock parents, Sept. 27 It makes me so angry that doctors and pharmaceutical companies heavily influence vulnerable parents who are desperately seeking help for their children. Do they really know the true side effects of these drugs? Or do they actually believe they work well? Parents will never know. From my experience, nothing is more disturbing than asking the right questions about side effects and being arrogantly told by medical professionals: How are we supposed to know when we have only begun using this drug two years ago? Yes, parents, we and our children are their guinea pigs! Parents must have all the facts about this issue. Not just the side effects of drugs but also of options that are out there for them. There is more than one path to take besides the medical one. Do your research by asking pharmacists, teachers, behaviour therapists, naturopaths or occupational therapists about managing ADHD. These sources are extremely useful and it will help make drug-related decisions easier. M. Kohek, Whitby See the article here: Parents must have all the facts … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2012

After news broke of the Wednesday death of Sons of Anarchy star Johnny Lewis -- who was also named a murder suspect in the death of his landlady, Catherine Davis -- more details are emerging about the life of the actor, who was 28. Back in 2004, Lewis (who also appeared on The OC, Alien Vs. Predator and American Dream) promoted Narcanon, an anti-drug program created by the Church of Scientology, the Daily News reports. The paper also writes that Lewis' parents were both active Scientologists, with his father, Michael Lewis, appearing in an instructional self-help video based on the works of L. Ron Hubbard, the Church's founder. PHOTOS: Stars we've lost Although toxicology reports are pending, authorities are investigating whether Lewis was on a new, synthetic drug known as "Smiles" before the violent rampage at 81-year-old Davis' house in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. On Wednesday, Lewis got into a violent altercation with Davis, neighbor Daniel Blackburn and a handyman; police report that Davis was bludgeoned to death, and Lewis eventually jumped or fell off the roof, leading to his death. Insomnia, Anxiety Drugs May Raise Dementia Risk

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2012

Latest Mental Health News By Brenda Goodman, MA WebMD Health News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD Sept. 27, 2012 -- Seniors who take certain kinds of drugs to treat anxiety or insomnia may be more likely to develop dementia than those who do not, a new study shows. Seniors are often prescribed benzodiazepines or similar drugs to help with sleeping problems or anxiety. And even though most of these drugs are only meant to be used for a few weeks or months at a time, the drugs can be habit forming. Studies have found that many older adults stay on them longer, sometimes for years. The new study, which is published in the BMJ, compared the risk of dementia in two groups of French seniors -- 95 who were recent users of any of 23 benzodiazepines or similar drugs at the start of the study and 968 who were not. During the next 15 years, doctors diagnosed 253 cases of dementia. Thirty people (32%) who had taken benzodiazepines or similar drugs developed memory loss and difficulty thinking, compared to 223 people (23%) who had not taken them. Drugs used by people in this study included Ambien, Halcion, Klonopin, Restoril, Valium, … Continue reading

FDA launches campaign against fake Internet pharmacies

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2012

Buyers beware when it comes to buying medicine online, the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers. On Friday, the agency launched "BeSafeRx: Know Your Online Pharmacy," a national campaign to raise awareness about fake Internet pharmacies and their potential risk to consumer health. "Buying medicines from rogue online pharmacies can be risky because they may sell fake, expired, contaminated, not approved by FDA, or otherwise unsafe products that are dangerous to patients," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg. "Fraudulent and illegal online pharmacies often offer deeply discounted products. If the low prices seem too good to be true, they probably are. FDA's BeSafeRx campaign is designed to help patients learn how to avoid these risks." The agency did a survey and found that about 1 in 4 consumers bought prescription drugs online. Nearly 30% said they were not confident about buying drugs safely on the Internet. In July, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy analyzed more than 10,000 websites and found 97% were not in compliance with U.S. pharmacy laws and were listed as "Not Recommended." These products present a potential serious risk because they can contain too little or too much active ingredient, the wrong ingredients altogether … Continue reading

FDA: Beware Buying Prescription Drugs Online

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2012

A moving target of as many as 40,000 active online pharmacies, a huge majority of them fly-by-night start-ups, may sell products at a cut-rate price but they may also deliver expired, contaminated and fake drugs that can harm consumers, the FDA said today. "You have no guarantee of the safety, efficacy or quality of those products," Dr. Margaret Hamburg, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, told ABC News. "You want to go to an online pharmacy that is licensed, located in the United States, [and] importantly, that will ask for a prescription from a doctor." Today, the FDA launched BeSafeRx, a national campaign to alert consumers to the possible dangers of buying pharmaceuticals online. "This a real problem. In fact, it is a growing problem, it is a problem that we are doing everything we can ... to try and protect the safety and security of the drug supply chain," Hamburg said. "The consumers have a role to play, as well, and that's why we want them to be informed about how to recognize a safe and legal online pharmacy so they can get those drugs that they really do need." In May, the FDA surveyed more than 6,000 … Continue reading

Thus their potential in regenerative medicine, where damaged or diseased tissue can be repaired or replaced by growing new tissue, is huge, as senior author Timothy Nelson explains in a press release: "Pluripotent stem cells show great promise in the field of regenerative medicine; however, the risk of uncontrolled cell growth will continue to prevent their use as a therapeutic treatment." Nelson is Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and works in the General Internal Medicine department and the Transplant Center at the Mayo. The idea of using iPS cells is for doctors to be able to take some adult tissue, for example skin cells, from the patient who needs the … Continue reading

(CYTX), a biotechnology company with $10 million in annual revenue, rose the most in about a year after the company won a $4.7 million U.S. government contract to develop a stem cell therapy to treat burns caused by thermal or radioactive bombs. The company had a net loss last year of $32 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. (OSIR) announced today that it has been notified by Swissmedic, the Swiss agency responsible for the evaluation of drugs, that Prochymal (remestemcel-L) will be evaluated under its Rapid Authorization Procedures. Use of the Rapid Authorization Procedures is only permitted if the clinical data demonstrates a high potential for benefit for a severe, disabling or life-threatening disease, and where no alternative treatment option exists. As a result of this decision, Osiris intendeds to promptly submit the full Common Technical Document to Swissmedic in the electronic or eCTD format to facilitate review. The Common Technical Document for Prochymal contains over 90,000 pages of data on the stem cell drug and is similar to the applications filed in Canada and New Zealand.
