Drugs played ‘major role’ in man’s death after Garda raid

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

By Eoin English Thursday, September 27, 2012 Illegal drugs played a major role in the death of a man who became ill while being restrained by garda during a drugs raid almost five years ago, an inquest heard yesterday. Assistant state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster told Cork City Coroners Court her postmortem on David OMahony, 22, showed he had taken cocaine, heroin, alcohol and probably cannabis in the hours before his death. The cause of death had been cocaine, alcohol and lignocaine toxicity during restraint, she said. She described injuries found on Mr OMahonys body, including bruises on his left wrist consistent with the placement of handcuffs, as "minor". "They were not in my opinion sufficient to account for death," she said. Mr OMahony, of 8McSwiney Villas, Gurranabraher, Cork, became agitated while garda were searching the house on Nov 14, 2007. He was restrained and handcuffed with his hands behind his back before he suffered a seizure. He was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital. The Garda Siochna Ombudsman Commission investigated the death and sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who directed that no garda should face charges. Dr Bolster yesterday said tests conducted by the State … Continue reading

Pharmacy staff wary of the hit-and-scoot gang

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

Sept. 27, 2012, midnight STAFF at Mayos Pharmacy in Lavington arent fooled by the scooter gang. When the youngsters turned the shop into a thoroughfare several times on Monday afternoon, staff members were on their toes to ensure nothing was stolen from the shelves. Pharmacy owner Andrew Crichton said he had chased them down the road a couple of months ago after they had stolen a handful of Freddo frogs. Its more frustrating than anything else, Mr Crichton said. It doesnt take them long to high-tail it out of here. Another store owner across the other side of Griffith Road said she often had a box-seat view of trouble-making kids as they raced from McDonalds, where they annoy staff, across the road to their regular hang-out at the Lavington Post Office. The woman, who didnt want to be named, said shed recently had an encounter with one of the boys who had stolen a $1 card from a stand outside her shop. She had gone out and taken the card off him before having a change of heart when he told her the card was for his mothers birthday. I said: Heres the card but in doing a good thing … Continue reading

Louisville woman uses inspiring personal story to spread Autism awareness [Family & Parenting]

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

At first glance, Jennifer Adams-Tuckers family looks pretty standard- a mom, a dad, two girls, and two boys. However, when three of your four children are diagnosed with autism, your story is anything but standard. And thats the story that Jennifer wants to share with others to prove that individuals with Autism can shine, achieve, inspire and can overcome societal obstacles to accomplish amazing things. Prior to her son, Darryl Jr., being diagnosed with autism, Jennifer was not at all familiar with the condition. I think the only thing I had seen on Autism was a video I had seen a few years ago. The day Darryl Jr. was diagnosed with Autism was scary. I was in this white room with the doctors just telling me he probably wont be able to this, this, and this. It was just all really negative, Adams-Tucker said. She looked to her husband for support. I looked at Darryl with tears in my eyes. Darryl looked up to the doctors and said Thats okay, hes still my boy! These were the words that would carry her through a variety of emotions, but at that point she realized that she and her husband needed to … Continue reading

Many Children With Autism Have Other Health Problems, Study Says

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

TUESDAY, Sept. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Many children with autism have interrelated health problems that can have a significant impact on their home and school lives, a new study finds. Researchers looked at nearly 3,000 children with autism and found that nearly one-fourth also had chronic gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and nausea. The children with the chronic gastrointestinal problems also had anxiety and so-called "atypical sensory responses," which are heightened reactions to light, sound or particular textures, according to the study, which was published recently in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. "These problems can have a very real impact on daily life. Children with anxiety may be distressed or reluctant to engage in new activities, and those with sensory problems may have trouble paying attention or participating in overstimulating environments," Micah Mazurek, assistant professor of health psychology and a clinical child psychologist at the University of Missouri, said in a university news release. "These children may also suffer uncomfortable [gastrointestinal] problems that they may not be able to communicate about to adults." Effective management of these problems may improve autistic children's quality of life and response to treatment, she said. "Parents need to be … Continue reading

Updated: September 26, 2012, 12:47 AM ET CINCINNATI -- Reds manager Dusty Baker had a stroke in addition to his irregular heartbeat last week and will need another week of rest before he's able to rejoin the team for the final regular-season series and the playoffs. The 63-year-old manager disclosed his condition to his players on Tuesday before the start of a series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Bench coach Chris Speier and players said Baker was upbeat and visibly thinner. "He's lost a lot of water weight," Speier said. "He was anxious [to get back]. It was great to see him. Again, he looks really, really good. We're all anxious to get him back in charge." Speier will manage the three-game series against the Brewers and a three-game series in Pittsburgh over the weekend. Baker could return for the final three games in St. Louis starting Monday, followed by the playoffs. The Reds clinched their second NL Central title in the last three years while Baker was still in a Chicago hospital on Saturday night. FDA Acknowledges Receipt of Resubmission of the ELIQUIS® (apixaban) New Drug Application to Reduce the Risk of Stroke …

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

PRINCETON, N.J. & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Bristol-Myers Squibb Company(BMY) and Pfizer Inc. (PFE) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has acknowledged receipt of the New Drug Application (NDA) resubmission for ELIQUIS (apixaban) to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). The FDA assigned a new Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) goal date of March 17, 2013. The FDA has deemed the resubmission a complete response to its June 22, 2012 Complete Response Letter that requested additional information on data management and verification from the ARISTOTLE trial. The ELIQUIS NDA is based on the results of the ARISTOTLE and AVERROES studies. These clinical studies evaluated ELIQUIS in approximately 24,000 patients with NVAF, in the largest clinical trial program conducted to date in this patient population. The landmark ARISTOTLE trial compared apixaban to warfarin, the standard of care, in more than 18,000 NVAF patients, while AVERROES compared apixaban to aspirin in 5,598 NVAF patients who were unsuitable for vitamin K antagonist (VKA) therapy. ARISTOTLE and AVERROES are part of an ongoing clinical development program for ELIQUIS, which is projected to include nearly 60,000 patients worldwide across multiple indications and … Continue reading

Researchers even closer to early detection of Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) In collaboration with colleagues at Oxford, a team of researchers at Ume University in Sweden has now further elaborated its discovery of a way to detect Parkinson's disease at an early stage, and applications in clinical care are not far away. The project is an example of bridging the gap between basic and clinical research in care environments. The new findings are based on close cooperation between the medical chemist Ludmilla Morozova-Roche's and the neurologist Lars Forsgren's research teams at Ume University and Jason Davis's team at Oxford University in the UK, who were primarily responsible for the chemical analyses. Their findings are now being published in the journal Chemical Science. Parkinson's disease attacks the nervous system and, like many other diseases, is caused by proteins that lump together into so-called amyloid. Behind these new findings lies a discovery from the spring of 2011, when the Ume scientists were able to determine endogenous antibodies against the most important amyloid protein, alpha-synuclein. These antibodies were seen as being able to function as a diagnostic marker, thereby enabling early detection of the disease. In the new article the discovery is elaborated further in the form of a simplified … Continue reading

A team at MIT has developed a computer programme that is able to recognise the tremors, breathiness and weakness in the voice These symtpoms are thought to be early indicators of the degenerative condition Study leader Dr Max Little is building up a database of 10,000 voices to support his project By Daily Mail Reporter PUBLISHED: 10:05 EST, 26 September 2012 | UPDATED: 12:28 EST, 26 September 2012 Leaving a simple phone message could help spot the early signs of Parkinsons years before serious symptoms develop, say scientists. Researchers have discovered they can detect the disease through voice recordings with initial studies already showing a 99 per cent accuracy rate. A team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a computer programme that is able to recognise the tremors, breathiness and weakness in the voice, which are thought to be early indicators of the condition. The technology works partly by tracking the motion of the vocal cords and detecting any tremor The voice analysis software can even provide an unprecedented level of detail that can distinguish how far along a patient is with the disease. The Parkinsons Voice Initiative led by British scientist Dr Max Little, is looking to see … Continue reading
