Drugs 'factor' in Kinsale deaths

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

12 September 2012 Last updated at 04:16 ET The Health Service Executive has issued a warning to drug users about a brown powder form of ecstasy, which may have been a factor in the death of two men in County Cork. The substance is known to contain Methylamphetamine, better known as MDMA or ecstasy, and Paramethoxymethamphetamine or PMMA. It said Irish police have confirmed the product may have been a factor in the deaths of Michael Coleman and Liam Coffey in Kinsale at the weekend. Medical professionals in the Cork area have been told to be vigilant, and the public is advised that the drugs carry serious health risks, particularly when combined with other drugs including alcohol. The HSE said if someone gets into difficulty after taking the substance, it is important to get help immediately. Symptoms associated with the powder include high fever, rapid heart rate and agitation. The HSE is liaising with community and voluntary groups working with drugs users in the area and also with police. David Lane, co-ordinator of addiction services for HSE South, said the biggest concern was that anyone who uses the powder with other drugs and/or alcohol is at a higher risk of … Continue reading

Medistem Advances Type 1 Diabetes Stem Cell Technology Licensed From Yale

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 12, 2012) - Medistem Inc. ( PINKSHEETS : MEDS ) announced today completion of the first phase of a joint project with the Shumakov Research Center of Transplantology and Artificial Organs of the Russian Federation and its Russian and CIS licensee ERCell. The collaboration is based on using Endometrial Regenerative Cell (ERC) technology licensed from Yale University to treat type 1 diabetes. Dr. Viktor Sevastianov, Head and Professor of the Institute of Biomedical Research and Technology, within the Shumakov Center, demonstrated safety and feasibility of ERC injection in experimental animal models of diabetes.Additionally, the studies demonstrated that the cell delivery technology developed by Dr. Sevastianov's laboratory can be used to enhance growth of ERC.These experiments are part of the process for registration of "new pharmacological substances," which is the first step towards drug approval in Russia. "Type 1 diabetes is a significant problem in the Russian Federation. Our laboratory has been working developing various delivery formulations for cell therapy, such as SpheroGel, which is registered in Russia," said Dr. Sevastianov. "Given that the ERC can be produced in large quantities, is a universal donor cell, and already is approved for clinical trials in both the USA … Continue reading

Deaf gerbils hear again with stem cells

Cancer Health Home>>Cancer>>Health news Written by: BEN HIRSCHLER, Reuters Sep. 12, 2012 A 10-month-old female Gerbil is seen in this file photo. (QMI Agency) Scientists have restored hearing to deaf gerbils using human embryonic stem cells in an advance that could eventually help people with an intractable form of deafness caused by nerve damage. The procedure needs further animal research to assess safety and long-term effectiveness but researchers said on Wednesday the experiment was an important proof of concept, marking a further advance in the growing field of regenerative medicine. Marcelo Rivolta from Britains University of Sheffield, who led the research, said the first patients could receive cell therapy for hearing loss in clinical trials in a few years. If this was a human patient, it would mean going from being so deaf as to be unable to hear a lorry or truck on the street to being able to maintain a conversation, Rivolta told reporters. What we have shown here is functional recovery using human stem cells, which is unique. Gerbils were selected for the test because their hearing range is similar to that of humans, while mice - the usual choice for laboratory tests - hear at higher … Continue reading

Researchers restore hearing in deaf gerbils with stem cells, say it’s the first step in restoring human hearing

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

TORONTO Researchers have restored the ability to hear in deaf gerbils using implanted human embryonic stem cells, achieving what they call a first step in potentially overcoming some causes of hearing loss in people. While more study is needed to ensure the technique is safe for humans, principal researcher Dr. Marcelo Rivolta of the University of Sheffield said the work shows that stem cells can indeed regenerate nerve cells needed for hearing. It is early days, but we believe this is a substantial step forward because what we have here is the proof of concept that we can use human stem cells derived from human embryonic stem cells to repair the ear, Rivolta said from Sheffield, England. The researchers describe their work in a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The progenitor cells implanted in the gerbils were produced in the lab from a line of human embryonic stem cells approved for use in research. Embryonic stem cells give rise to virtually all tissue types in the body, from the various organs to neurons to skin. Progenitor cells generated from the stem cells have been manipulated to produce only certain kinds of cells. These otic progenitors differentiate into cells … Continue reading

'Berlin Man,' Doctor Convinced HIV Cure Is Real

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

More than five years after a radical treatment, a San Francisco man and his German doctor are convinced that he remains the first person cured of infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Timothy Ray Brown, who is known as "The Berlin Patient" because of where he was treated, and Dr. Gero Hutter made their first joint appearance in the U.S. on Wednesday when Hutter spoke at a symposium on gene therapy at Washington University in St. Louis. Scientists are studying whether gene therapy can be used to rid the body of HIV. Brown, 46, was diagnosed with HIV in 1995. In 2006, he also developed leukemia while living in Germany. Hutter performed a blood stem cell transplant using a donor with a rare gene mutation that provides natural resistance to HIV. Hutter said that resistance transferred to Brown. In an interview with The Associated Press, Brown said he feels great, has not needed HIV medication since the 2007 surgery, and is now active in a foundation named for him that seeks a cure for HIV. Hutter said enough time has passed to say without hesitation that Brown is cured, citing the same five-year standard after which some cancer … Continue reading

Stem cells restore hearing to deaf gerbils

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2012

Eighteen gerbils were given a drug to make them deaf in one ear, before being given an injection of 50,000 progenitor cells into the cochlea, which translates sounds into nerve impulses which can be sent to the brain. On average about a third of the cells grafted themselves to the ear and replace the damaged nerve cells. Brain scans showed that the gerbils typically recovered 45 per cent of their hearing after 10 weeks. In humans this would translate to someone who could formerly not hear a lorry passing by their window gaining the ability to follow a conversation in a crowded room, researchers said. They added that the results were variable, with some gerbils recovering up to 90 per cent of their hearing and others seeing very little improvement, depending on how many of the cells took hold. More research is needed to establish that the benefits of the treatment are lasting and that it is safe for use on humans, but the study represents a "huge step forward" in deafness research, the team said. Dr Marcelo Rivolta, who led the study, said: "Stem cells have been used in animal models of deafness before, mostly the mouse, with different … Continue reading
