Pharmacy Holdup Shines ‘Bright Light’ on Prescription Drug Abuse

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2012

Last weeks robbery at a Krakow pharmacy demonstrates the desperate steps people addicted to prescription drugs will take, the chief of Franklin Countys drug task force said. This shines a bright light on the growing problem of opiate abuse, said Detective Sgt. Jason Grellner. A man got away with a large amount of Percocet pills in the Tuesday, Aug. 28, afternoon robbery at Halls Pharmacy on Highway A. The robber claimed to have a gun but no weapon was displayed. Following an extensive investigation which included an anonymous tip, detectives questioned, then arrested Matthew J. Florence, 24, of Washington, last Thursday afternoon. Florence later was charged with one count each of first-degree pharmacy robbery and theft of a controlled substance, both felonies. Florence is being held in the county jail on a $150,000 cash-only bond. The charges are prosecuted under a specific state statute related to pharmacy crimes, authorities said. Grellner said Florence, who has no prior felony charges, would never have committed the robbery had he not become addicted to prescription opiates. One in four people who begin taking these drugs under a doctors prescription will become addicted, Grellner said citing statistical data. He said while Americans account for … Continue reading

Pharmacy/convenience store coming to downtown Champaign

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2012

CHAMPAIGN Downtown Champaign is expected to get a new pharmacy and convenience store in a matter of months. CompleteCare Pharmacy, which already has locations in downtown Springfield and Chatham, plans to open at 14 E. Washington St., C, on the first floor of the Hickory Building. The store, which will carry convenience foods and household supplies as well as prescription and over-the-counter drugs, could open as early as December, said Bob Pemberton, manager of Independence Holding Co., CompleteCare's parent company. It would be the first time since 1991 that downtown Champaign has had a pharmacy outside a clinic setting. Cavett-Rexall Drug operated a store at 2 Main St. from 1979 to 1989, when it was sold to Hook's, and Hook's operated the store for another two years. In a market dominated by both Walgreens and CVS, Pemberton said CompleteCare aims to provide service and "a hands-on approach ... in a way the chains don't." He said CompleteCare is counting on good foot traffic from people who live or work in downtown Champaign. Plus, there's street parking along the front and side of the building to accommodate people who come by car. The store plans to employ seven people, including at … Continue reading

Stem Cell Research and Your Dog

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2012

By Kim Ribbink, Studio One Networks Stem cell research often conjures images of political firestorms and futuristic science, yet it's a field that's already offering hope for humans and dogs alike. While the ideal of fixing spinal injuries and curing disease may be a long way off, dogs treated with stem cells are enjoying a new lease on life. Pepper, a 10-year-old standard poodle, is a case in point. Crippled with arthritis in both his hips, Pepper came to James Gaynor, DVM, M.S., medical director of Animal Anesthesia & Pain Management Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., with his owners, who fully expected to have to put their pet to sleep. Conventional treatments hadn't worked, or had made their dog even sicker. In fact, Pepper's owners were so certain nothing could be done that they bought another puppy. "At our 60 day recheck, the owner was hugging me and crying out of happiness because, in her words, we gave her back her dog," Dr. Gaynor says. "The only problem was she now had Pepper and a puppy." Healthy Bones It wasn't long ago that dogs like Pepper with arthritis had few options beyond conventional anti-inflammatory treatments -- including a variety of … Continue reading

UCI researchers' work could help paralyzed patients

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2012

Two UC Irvine associate professors have laid the foundation for a treatment that could help people who are paralyzed by spinal cord injuries. Aileen Anderson and Brian Cummings developed a stem cell treatment in collaboration with Northern California-based StemCells Inc. that is being used in clinical trials in Switzerland. The treatment has resulted in the world's first case of patients regaining some feeling, according to UCI. "We think this really bodes well for the next stage of the trial," Anderson said. The initial clinical trial at the Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich injected adult human neural stem cells into the spinal cords of three paralyzed patients. Two have regained some feeling of touch and heat, according to StemCells Inc., which developed the cell. The treatment has the potential to not only restore feeling, but also help restore control over bowel movements, said UCI spokesman Tom Vasich. The trial shows strong evidence that the cell is doing what it was created to do, but the results are not yet concrete, Anderson said. The trial only used three patients, an initial group to determine if the approach is safe, and it didn't have a control group. "Despite all of these caveats, it's … Continue reading

Hope for paralysed patients as stem cell jab restores feeling to patients with damaged spines

Posted: Published on September 5th, 2012

By Daily Mail Reporter PUBLISHED: 12:03 EST, 4 September 2012 | UPDATED: 02:38 EST, 5 September 2012 Patients with broken spines have reported having feeling restored to areas that had previously been paralysed, after receiving stem cell injections. Scientists said they were 'encouraged' after two of three patients injected with donated foetal brain tissue responded to treatment at Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. Each patient had around 20million neural stem cells delivered directly into their injured spinal cords between four and eight months after they were injured. Early tests suggest stem cells could restore feeling to people with damaged spinal cords Before the treatment none of the patients could feel anything below the nipples. Just three months after therapy two of the patients reported feeling some sensation. By six months they could detect both touch and heat between the chest and belly button. The third patient detected no changes. Stephen Huhn, vice president of StemCells in Newark, California, that is developing the treatment told the New Scientist: 'The face we've seen responses to light touch, heat and electrical impulses so far down in two of the patients is very unexpected. 'They're really close to normal in those areas now … Continue reading
