New genetic mechanism for controlling blood cell development and blood vessel integrity found

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2012

Public release date: 10-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Dian Land dj.land@hosp.wisc.edu 608-261-1034 University of Wisconsin-Madison MADISON The protein GATA2 is known as a "master regulator" of blood cell development. When a mutation occurs in the gene that makes GATA2, serious blood diseases such as acute myeloid leukemia can result. Zooming in on the GATA2 gene, UW-Madison researchers and their collaborators at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have discovered unexpectedly that a small DNA sequence drives this powerful master regulator. The sequence plays an essential role in controlling GATA2 production and generating self-renewing blood stem cells responsible for the earliest steps in the development of blood cells of all kindsred cells to transport oxygen and white cells to fight infection. The researchers also found that the DNA sequence, which they call the +9.5 GATA2 switch site, ensures that blood vessels function properly to prevent hemorrhaging. Until now, GATA2 had not been implicated in blood vessel integrity. The study appears in The Journal of Clinical Investigation (online Sept. 10, 2012). Although the study was performed in mice, it should have significant clinical relevance, particularly to physicians and scientists aiming to understand certain types of leukemia and related disorders … Continue reading

Ten-year-old German Shepherd De Niro is at the veterinarian's office for a routine check up. Owner Keith Moskowiak says De Niro couldn't have done it just two months ago. It's not cheap, but we found pet owners feel the results outweigh the cost. Eleven-year-old DeNiro is about to do something he couldn't do when he was ten. Jump. Owner Keith Noskowiak couldn't be happier. "That's awesome seeing him be able to do that again." DeNiro suffered from severe arthritis in his back. A German shepherd named Shadow had hip dysplasia. She could barely walk, let alone jump as she can today, catching balls in flight. "She would whimper all night long because she was starting to hurt. It was starting to get more severe," owner Luther Kortbein says. These two German shepherds were the first dogs to receive stem cell therapy in Wisconsin. Posted: Published on September 11th, 2012

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 PEDDLING of illegal drugs in Davao City is becoming a family affair, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) regional chief said in explaining why there is an increase in illegal drug activities. Meaning not only the father ang involved sa drug rate kasama na rin ang kanila mga asawa o anak (Its a family affair business in which the wife and the children are also involved, not only the father), said Emerson Rosales, PDEA regional director. Check our new look and tell us what you think. He said the authorities have monitored this based on the previous arrests of drug violators. He said it is never enough to just constrict the supply as the city has done to some extent, but there has to be effective actions to reduce the demand. A father's plea: End the war on drugs

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2012

Javier Sicilia leads a 50-cross procession at Loyola Marymount University, each cross representing 1,000 cartel murder victims. STORY HIGHLIGHTS Editor's note: Javier Sicilia is one of Mexico's most highly regarded poets and the leader of the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity. His son, Juan Francisco, was murdered last year near his hometown of Cuernavaca. The Movement's Caravan for Peace crossed the border at San Diego on August 12 and will arrive in Washington on September 10. Follow on Twitter @caravanaUSA (CNN) -- Why was my son murdered? He was 24, and he had never tried drugs. He didn't even smoke. He had paid half his university costs with a sports scholarship and was working as administrative staff at a cardiac clinic in Morelos, Mexico. Why then was my son suffocated by hit men from the Gulf Cartel? Why did his six friends, just like him, die at his side? The answer, you may tell me, is obvious. "Because drug traffickers are bad, and must be stopped." The answer, however, is not that simple. If it were I would not be leading a caravan for peace across the United States. Let's pose the question differently. If Mexico's President Felipe … Continue reading
