Finding the right combination was a relief, consultant says

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

Exhaustion from sleepless nights convinced Vancouver public relations consultant Diana Barkley to try hormone replacement therapy five years ago. The 50-something professional says she was aware of news reports suggesting a link to breast cancer and heart problems, but decided to look for more information. Insomnia, night sweats and hot flashes - all part of menopause for many women - were becoming unbearable. "That makes it nearly impossible to work effectively. The night sweats are uncomfortable, obviously. The hot flashes during the day, if you're in the middle of a presentation and you get one, it's very discomforting and it's also very distracting." For the uninitiated, a hot flash is a short-lived feeling of heat that typically starts in the chest area and spreads. It can lead to blushing and perspiration and affects about three-quarters of woman as their estrogen levels decline. Symptoms typically begin when women stop having regular menstrual periods in their early 50s and continue for years. Barkley said her research led her to the Westcoast Women's Clinic in Vancouver where she had a number of tests and extensive consultation. She's had the doses adjusted and combinations changed over the years and now takes a progesterone pill, … Continue reading

Arroyo undergoes 4th stem cell treatment

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

By Leila B. Salaverria Philippine Daily Inquirer Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo: Stem cell treatment MANILA, PhilippinesLike her predecessor, former President and Pampanga lawmaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has turned to stem cell therapy in an effort to improve her health. Arroyo said in her official Twitter account that she would have her fourth stem cell intravenous treatment with her alternative medicine doctor on Monday. Arroyo said her treatment would involve cultured stem cells, and it would be much more modest in price than the one coming from sheep or ones own body. A close friend and ally of Arroyo, Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez, confirmed that the President has started stem cell therapy, and that she told him that the stem cells she has been using did not come from lamb placenta, and was the less costly form of stem cell treatment. If you have a lot of health problems, you will try such things, Suarez said on Sunday. Suarez said he has even filed a resolution to investigate the practice of stem cell treatments in the country, as well as the claims being made about it, considering that it has been gaining popularity. The public needs … Continue reading

Councilman discusses requiring prescriptions for medicines containing pseudoephedrine

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A city councilman is looking into requiring people to have a prescription before buying medications with pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient used to make meth. Councilman Jeff Seifried is not saying he supports having a prescription to buy these drugs. He wants to start a discussion. "I've seen the effects it has on people in my zone and in Springfield. It's real. It's not out of sight, out of mind for me," he said. Jeff Seifried oversees Zone 1. That's the northwest side of Springfield. Police have busted more meth labs here than anywhere else in town. He has not made up his mind if he supports banning over-the-counter sales of meds with pseudoephedrine. "The languages I have asked to be drafted deals with pseudoephedrine. The reason why I asked for that is to kick off the discussion. I want to know what can we do? Is that something that's working on other communities. If so, do we need to look at it for Springfield?" he asked. In just one year, between 2010-2011 the number of meth labs found in Springfield nearly doubled to more than 100. Officials say this conversation is long over due. Seifried hopes to … Continue reading

Lung cancer study points to tighter pairing of drugs to patients

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

The first large and comprehensive study of the genetics of a common lung cancer finds that more than half the tumors from that cancer have mutations that might be treated by new drugs that are already in the pipeline or that could be easily developed. For the tens of thousands of patients with that cancer squamous-cell lung cancer the results are promising because they could foretell a new type of treatment in which drugs are tailored to match the genetic abnormality in each patient, researchers say. "This is a disease where there are no targeted therapies," said Dr. Matthew Meyerson of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, referring to modern drugs that attack genetic abnormalities. He is a lead author of the paper, with more than 300 authors, that was published online Sunday in the journal Nature. "What we found will change the landscape for squamous-cell carcinoma. I think it gives hope to patients," he said. The study is part of the Cancer Genome Atlas, a large project by the National Institutes of Health to examine genetic abnormalities in cancer. The study of squamous-cell lung cancer is the second genetic analysis of a common cancer, coming on the heels of a study … Continue reading

Curtis Jackson, also known as rapper 50 Cent, is one of the many people who speaks in the documentary How To Make Money Selling Drugs. It takes a certain kind of verve to call your documentary How To Make Money Selling Drugs and really mean it. Because the title doesn't lie: that is, in fact, what How To Make Money Selling Drugs is about. It's structured for about the first half of its running time as a satirical instructional film about how to get your own drug cartel by working your way up from small-time dealer to local distributor to kingpin and beyond. It talks to a wide variety of dealers, cops and experts about the relationships between different parts of the drug business, about what makes kids want to sell drugs instead of working for minimum wage, and about the risks of jail and violence. It explains how people in the drug business beat criminal charges and avoid arrest, as well as explaining jail as a cost of doing … Continue reading

Lack of drugs a risk for patients in emergencies

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

Published: Monday, September 10, 2012, 12:01 a.m. Emergency crews worry the constant switch-ups could lead to a paramedic making a mistake that could cause a patient pain, injuries or even death. Without careful planning, they also potentially could run out of the drugs they need to help people as they're taken to the hospital. "In the meantime, we're just having to really be on our toes and adjust on the fly," said Scott Dorsey, acting deputy chief and medical services administrator for Snohomish County Fire District 7 in Clearview. Drugs commonly administered by paramedics that have been affected by shortages include medicines for people having seizures or who are suffering from cardiac or respiratory trouble. In addition to treating pain, paramedics often need to sedate or anesthetize patients as well. In Snohomish County, fire departments and their medical supervisors are working to find solutions while they wait for a federal fix, they said. "Our personnel are having to rethink what they do on a real routine basis," Monroe fire Capt. Cindy Coker said. Drug shortages have been making national headlines for about two years now. Hospitals and emergency rooms have faced similar issues with shortages, as have cancer treatment centers. … Continue reading

Hundreds walk against ovarian cancer, Parkinson’s

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2012

Three days after arriving at Carleton University on a full-ride scholarship, Kristina Pliskevicius was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Thats when the nightmare began, Brian Rivait said as he described the experiences of his 30-year-old daughter-in-law. Pliskevicius was 25 at the time of her diagnosis. For us, everybody saw ovarian cancer as being a disease of older women and it just became really important that we needed to get that message out, that age is not a determinant of this disease, Rivait said Sunday during the 2012 Windsor Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope at Malden Park. Rivait said Pliskevicius is still in active treatment and is an inspiration to everybody. Rivait and his family joined the walk six years ago when Pliskevicius was diagnosed. They now help organize the event that draws hundreds of families, survivors and friends who have been affected somehow by ovarian cancer. Rivait said they were expecting to raise more than $100,000 this year. The money finances Ovarian Cancer Canadas support, awareness and education programs as well as ovarian cancer research. Rivait said the walk was started seven years ago by a family that lost a loved one to ovarian cancer. He said 25 people walked … Continue reading
