A genetic blueprint of your unborn baby

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Sequencing the whole genome of a fetus could provide a medical early warning on a previously unknown scale - but it also brings dilemmas, says Harriet A. Washington BOY or girl? This you can easily discover, but wouldn't you like to know more? If you could peer into your baby's medical future, what traits would you most want assurance about? Most parents wouldn't hesitate: a healthy child. Soon science will be able to help them with that more quickly, completely - and safely - than ever before. In June, a team at the University of Washington in Seattle announced a new technique that enables the construction of a comprehensive genome sequence - a genetic "blueprint", as they described it - of the developing fetus from as early as the first trimester (Science Translational Medicine, vol 4, p 137ra76). The test could be available in clinics in as little as five years. Then, in July, a team at Stanford University in California announced a slightly different technique for obtaining the same information (Nature, vol 487, p 320). Both techniques rely on the fact that fetal DNA circulates in the mother's bloodstream and can be isolated and sequenced. The Seattle test needs … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Isasagawa umano ang ika-apat na intravenous treatment ni dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sa Lunes bilang bahagi ng kanyang alternatibong pagpapagamot para sa kanyang sakit sa buto. Sa kanyang official Twitter account, inihayag ni Arroyo, kongresista na ngayon ng Pampanga, This Monday I will have my fourth stem cell intravenous treatment with my alternative medicine doctor." "It's cultured stem cell and much more modest in price than the one coming from sheep or one's own body," dagdag pa niya. Continue reading

Injection Warning After Tanning Salon Death

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Health watchdogs have warned people not to take illegal tanning injections after a young woman died. Jenna Vickers, 26, from Bolton, was found slumped in a tanning shop in the town on Monday. It is believed that she may have injected a tanning drug, which she had bought off the internet. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which regulates medicines and ensures they are safe to use, has appealed for anyone who has bought the drug Melanotan to contact them. A spokesman said: "We are warning people not to use this product. "Melanotan is not licensed for use in the UK and there is no information about its safety. Side effects from its use could be extremely serious. "If you have used this product do not use it again and, if you have any health concerns, you should seek advice from your doctor." It is not yet clear if there is any link between Miss Vickers' death and the tanning injections, but on August 17, in an entry on her Twitter page, she indicated she had taken the jabs. She said: "Getting a lovely tan now ... And I've had no no side effects 🙂 Very happy Bunny." … Continue reading

Officers patrol Cuba's coastline to deter and detect smugglers The golden beaches of Cayo Cruz lie at the end of a long path through a nature reserve. It is an idyllic stretch of Cuba's northern coast but this is key territory in the fight against international drug-trafficking. Cuba sits right between the world's major narcotics producers in South America and the biggest market for those drugs, the United States. The island has served as a bridge for traffickers in the past but in recent years it has been a barrier to the illegal trade. "We used to see a lot of suspicious boats here," Ardoldo Cisneros Pena recalls of the 1990s. He is chief border guard in Cayo Cruz, where we were recently given rare access. "There were almost daily drops into the sea," he says. Small planes would bombard Cuban waters with packets of drugs, for speedboats to whisk to the US. Today, the scene is tranquil. A young border guard scans the horizon from a mint-green watchtower. A stone slab below reads "They … Continue reading

Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute awarded $1.3 million to study cardiac stem cells

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Public release date: 6-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Sally Stewart Sally.stewart@cshs.org 310-248-6566 Cedars-Sinai Medical Center LOS ANGELES Sept. 6, 2012 A team of Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute stem cell researchers today was awarded a $1.3 million grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine to continue study of an experimental stem cell therapy that treats heart attack patients with heart-derived cells. Earlier this year, data from the first clinical trial of the stem cell treatment showed the therapy helped damaged hearts regrow healthy muscle. To date, this cell therapy, developed by Eduardo Marbn, MD, PhD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and Mark S. Siegel Family Professor, is the only treatment shown to regenerate the injured human heart. In this therapy, human heart tissue is used to grow specialized heart stem cells, which then are injected back into the patient's heart. The new research will focus on understanding the cellular mechanisms that have produced favorable outcomes. "We have seen encouraging results in patients with this treatment, and it has the potential to revolutionize how we treat heart attack patients," Marbn said. "This further study will allow us to better understand how it works, which we hope will lead … Continue reading

Gloria Arroyo to have stem cell treatment Monday

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will undergo stem cell therapy on Monday with an alternative medicine doctor. Arroyo, in a post on her Twitter account Saturday morning, said Monday's session will be her fourth intravenous treatment. "This Monday I will have my fourth stem cell intravenous treatment with my alternative medicine doctor," she said. Also she said, "It's cultured stem cell and much more modest in price than the one coming from sheep or one's own body." But she did not elaborate on how much the treatment will cost. Stem cell therapy is type of intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. Earlier this week, Arroyo said she continues to search for alternative solutions to an anatomic problem that prompted her to be rushed to a government hospital last month. Arroyo said she had seen at least two "alternative medicine practitioners," and has initiated communication with a "neurocervical spine purist." She said she also had her thrice-weekly therapy at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City Thursday. Arroyo underwent treatment last August for an anatomic problem that caused her to choke on her food. … Continue reading

Stem Cells Show Promise in Halting Heart Attack’s Ripple Effect

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Durham, NC (PRWEB) September 07, 2012 A new pre-clinical study demonstrates how stem cells may significantly reduce the ripple-effect damage caused by a heart attack. The study, by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, appears in the September issue of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. Several recent clinical trials have shown how stem cells can help the heart heal after an attack, but to date the investigations have focused on transplanting cells directly into the site of the attack itself. However, a heart attack has a ripple effect, much like how an earthquake reaches beyond its epicenter to affect outlying regions, too. As the heart attempts to shift the workload from the damaged section to surrounding healthy muscle, the tissue abutting the attack site gets caught in the middle. This often results in the tissue being overstressed and leads to cardiac failure. In this new study, the researchers evaluated the effects of expanding the stem cell treatment beyond the heart attack site to include the surrounding region. We wanted to look specifically at whether mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) improve the remodeling of the myocardium directly abutting the attack site, explained Zhongium Wu, Ph.D., associate professor of … Continue reading

Food supplement could treat some autism

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

A COMMON dietary supplement could treat a rare form of autism which has been found to be linked to an amino acid deficiency, a study published Thursday in the journal Science has found. US researchers were able to isolate a genetic mutation in some autism patients which speeds up metabolism of certain amino acids. These essential amino acids - branched chain amino acids or BCAAs - are not produced naturally in the human body and must be acquired through food. Because of the speeded up metabolism, the patients with this mutation burned through their stores of the amino acid more quickly than normal, creating an imbalance the researchers think may be linked to the neuro-behavioural symptoms of autism. "It was very surprising to find mutations in a potentially treatable metabolic pathway specific for autism," said co-author Joseph Gleeson of the University of California, San Diego. "What was most exciting was that the potential treatment is obvious and simple: Just give affected patients the naturally occurring amino acids their bodies lack." The genetic mutations were identified after researchers studied the genomes of several autistic children who also suffered epileptic seizures. Gleeson's team then genetically engineered mice to test the impact of … Continue reading
