EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (KDKA) Its not just a walk in the park for Cindy Vincent of East Liverpool, Ohio. Three and a half years ago, she was suffered a spinal cord injury in a major fall. I was helping someone in their garage, and I was up in the rafters and I fell through the rafters, said Vincent. So, it was 10 feet and I landed on concrete. She was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. They did a couple surgeries. It was a spinal cord injury, said Vincent. At the very beginning, they werent sure that I would walk at all. Two months in hospitals and years of rehab and loving support from family members gave Vincent the strength to walk a little further each day. Beaver Creek State Park near her home became her training ground. There was one time when I said to my sister, I dont know why Im doing this, because it was so hard, Vincent said. On March 7, I did an eighth of a mile, which was unbelievable. And finally, in July, I reached three miles. Nearly five kilometers, just in time for Saturdays UPMC UrgentCares 5K walk on the Montour Trail … Continue reading

Fort Detrick to receive $100 million grant to study PTSD

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

The Fort Detrick-based Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs on Friday announced $100 million in grants to fund research into the diagnosis and treatment of combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury. The money follows an executive order issued by the White House on Aug. 31 that calls for expanded mental health services for members of the military, veterans and their families. The departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are funding the research, CDMRP spokeswoman Gail Whitehead said. Two consortia, one to focus on PTSD and another on mild TBI, are to be set up. Investigators from a number of organizations, including the Defense Department, VA and academia, are expected to collaborate on the work, which will take place over five years, Col. Dallas Hack, director of the Combat Casualty Care Research Program at Detrick, said Friday. The Army has grappled with PTSD and mild TBI in recent years. The long-term health consequences for those who suffer are not well understood. "We didn't want a single (consortium) to try to be everything to everybody," Hack said. More than 2 million service members have deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq since Sept. 11, 2001. The Army estimates that as many as … Continue reading

Cosmetic treatment benefits MS patients

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Botox is now being used to treat people with multiple sclerosis coping with incontinence. Lisa Fine walks with confidence and little pain. Three months ago that was not the case. "You're walking somewhere and thinking everything is fine and urine just starts streaming down your leg," Fine said. No bladder control is one of the silent symptoms Fine has living with multiple sclerosis: a chronic condition that affects the central nervous system. That was before she was injected with the popular cosmetic treatment, Botox. Dr. Marlene Murphy says, "Botox is a neuro toxin. It stops spasms in muscles whether they are in your face, whether they are in your shoulder or neck or leg or your bladder." Dr. Murphy is a urologist at the Mandell Center for Multiple Sclerosis at Mt. Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Hartford. "Basically the way it works, by injecting it into the bladder, it paralyzes a muscle and allows the bladder to hold just like my bladder," Dr. Murphy said. Fine is ecstatic with the results. "I had very little expectations," Fine said. "It blew it away, it blew it away." Read this article: Cosmetic treatment benefits MS patients … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Responsible for Breast Cancer

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

MONTGOMERY, ALA. (September 7, 2012) A federal jury in Salt Lake City, Utah awarded $5.1 million to plaintiff Toshiko Okuda in a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) case after hearing four weeks of testimony regarding the link between hormone replacement drugs and breast cancer. The jury determined that the HRT drug Prempro, manufactured by Wyeth, caused the plaintiffs breast cancer and that the drug makers failed to adequately warn of that risk on labels provided to doctors and patients. Frank Woodson, Russ Abney, Matt Teague and James Lampkin of Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., of Montgomery, Ala., represented Ms. Okuda, along with James Esparza of James Esparza Law Firm in Murray, Utah. Hormone Replacement Therapy, including drugs such as Premarin, Prempro and Provera, was prescribed to treat the symptoms of menopause until 2002, when a comprehensive womens health study was halted as a result of increasing incidents of breast cancer. The drugs also were promoted for off-label uses, including prevention of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimers disease. The evidence in this case is obviously the drug makers knew of the risk of breast cancer associated with these drugs, but they did nothing to warn thousands of women who were … Continue reading

Courts Jury finds hormone therapy led to breast cancer; drug companies vow to appeal. A federal jury awarded $5.1 million in compensatory damages to a Utah woman Friday after finding hormone therapy drugs caused her breast cancer and drugmakers were negligent because they failed to adequately warn of that risk on labels provided to doctors and patients. The U.S. District Court jury, comprised of seven women and five men, sat through four weeks of expert testimony and scientific presentations before being handed the case early Wednesday afternoon. They came back with a decision two days later. Toshiko Okuda, who filed her case in 2004, wept at the news after the jury left the courtroom. In a statement released later through James Esparza, her Utah attorney, Okuda said she was "pleased that the jury, after four weeks of hearing the facts of this case, elected to stand up and tell Wyeth and Upjohn that their conduct in marketing and promoting Premarin, Provera and Prempro was unreasonable and irresponsible for an American corporation." "I plan to move forward and will support other women when they have their day in court," Okuda added. "I want to thank all the attorneys and others involved … Continue reading

Gloria Arroyo to have stem cell treatment Monday

Posted: Published on September 8th, 2012

Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will undergo stem cell therapy on Monday with an alternative medicine doctor. Arroyo, in a post on her Twitter account Saturday morning, said Monday's session will be her fourth intravenous treatment. "This Monday I will have my fourth stem cell intravenous treatment with my alternative medicine doctor," she said. Also she said, "It's cultured stem cell and much more modest in price than the one coming from sheep or one's own body." But she did not elaborate on how much the treatment will cost. Stem cell therapy is type of intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. Earlier this week, Arroyo said she continues to search for alternative solutions to an anatomic problem that prompted her to be rushed to a government hospital last month. Arroyo said she had seen at least two "alternative medicine practitioners," and has initiated communication with a "neurocervical spine purist." She said she also had her thrice-weekly therapy at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City Thursday. Arroyo underwent treatment last August for an anatomic problem that caused her to choke on her food. … Continue reading
