Repairing cartilage with fat: Problems and potential solutions

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2012

Public release date: 23-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Hilary Glover hilary.glover@biomedcentral.com 44-020-319-22370 BioMed Central Stem cells isolated from fat are being considered as an option for treating tissue damage and diseases because of their accessibility and lack of rejection. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy shows that this is not as straightforward as previously believed, and that fat-derived stem cells secrete VEGF and other factors, which can inhibit cartilage regeneration. However pre-treating the cells with antibodies against VEGF and growing them in nutrients specifically designed to promote chondrocytes can neutralize these effects. Chondrocytes make and maintain healthy cartilage but damage and disease including osteoarthritis can destroy cartilage resulting in pain and lack of mobility. Stem cell therapy using cells isolated from adult tissue (such as fat) are being investigated as a way of repairing this damage. Stem cells have the ability to become many different types of tissue so the real trick is persuading them to become cartilage rather than bone, or blood vessels, for example. Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology found that adipose (fat) stem cells (ASCs) secrete large amounts of factors, especially the growth factor … Continue reading

Sports in Brief: Armstrong gives up fight on doping charges

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2012

said Thursday night he is finished fighting a barrage of drug charges from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, putting his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists in history at risk. The decision sets up a likely lifetime ban from the sport and the possibility that Armstrong will be stripped of his signature achievement - the extraordinary run of Tour titles he won in 1999-2005. "There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now," Armstrong said in a statement. "The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today - finished with this nonsense." Armstrong, who retired last year, said his decision is not an admission of drug use, but a refusal to enter an arbitration process he believes is unfair. USADA will almost certainly treat Armstrong's decision as an admission of guilt, and hang the label of drug cheat on an athlete who was a hero to thousands for overcoming life-threatening testicular cancer and for his foundation's support for cancer research. The agency can impose a lifetime ban and recommend he be stripped … Continue reading

Ron Hubbard and Scientology, has seen four patients die while under facility care since 2009. At the time of our initial story, three patients had died on Narconon Arrowhead grounds in nine months. Last week, NBC's Rock Center aired the results of an investigation into the rehab facility for the first time. After an initial statement from Narconon CEO Gary Smith, 2News received an expanded letter from Smith defending the care of its patients. Here is the letter in its entirety. AN OPEN LETTER FROM NARCONON ARROWHEADS CEO, GARY W. SMITH To the grieving parents I want to say that I know what it is like to lose a child. My wife and I have struggled through every birthday, every Christmas and the date of death, year after year for nearly two decades now. I understand at a gut level what these parents are going through and how desperate they are for answers they need to explain the terrible loss. I also know there are no set rules in how someone … Continue reading

California supplier of adulterated chemo drugs gets two years

ST. LOUIS The California man who supplied a St. Louis area doctor and others with adulterated chemotherapy drugs was sentenced in federal court here Thursday to two years in prison. James Newcomb, of La Jolla, owned Ban Dune Marketing Inc., and supplied unapproved foreign chemotherapy drugs to dozens of U.S. doctors from 2008 to May 18, 2011, court documents show. Newcomb pleaded guilty in February to one felony count of conspiring to distribute adulterated prescription drugs. In addition to the prison time, Newcomb will forfeit $1.4 million and a Land Rover seized during the investigation, prosecutors said. Dr. Abid Nisar, 60, who has offices in Florissant, East St. Louis and Granite City, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of introducing misbranded prescription drugs into interstate commerce and admitted buying $352,504 worth of drugs from Newcomb and co-defendant Sandra L. Behe, 44, also of La Jolla. Nisar was sentenced to two years of probation, 200 hours of community service and a $25,000 fine. He also agreed to pay back more than $1 million for … Continue reading
