Drug addicts: From clinic into vacuum

Posted: Published on August 20th, 2012

20 years ago the first group of "Drug Addicts Anonymous" was formed in Moscow. Every week in Russia over a thousand community meetings are held in 142 cities. The effectiveness of this technique in combination with medication was formally approved by the Ministry of Health. It is believed that every other addict can achieve at least one year of remission. Looking at the frail, smiling Eugenia, it is impossible to imagine that a third of her life was given to drugs. "I have actively used drugs for ten years. Six years ago, I had no friends, no family. The last few months before joining the "Drug Addict Anonymous" I lived on the stairs because I was kicked out of my house," said Eugenia. She was lucky - not only she survived, but returned to normal life, obtained education, found a job, and got married. According to her, none of this would have happened if it were not for the community: "I have always been persecuted everywhere. And then I was listened to for the first time. And I wanted to learn to live without drugs." "Drug Addicts Anonymous" was created in the 1950s in the United States, by analogy with … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Is mouth guard a health menace?

Posted: Published on August 20th, 2012

Q: Can a dental night guard contain BPA? Instead of getting a new dental night guard after three months or so, I continue to use it until it doesn't work. Sometimes they last a few years. I haven't noticed any problems, but I'm concerned about hidden harm. A: BPA (bisphenol A) is an estrogenlike chemical that has been used in a variety of hard plastic products. The Food and Drug Administration recently ruled that children's drinking cups and baby bottles can no longer contain BPA because of concerns about the potential for hormone disruption. Dental night guards are designed to protect teeth from grinding during sleep (bruxism). They often are made of hard, clear plastic, but it is not easy to determine if they contain BPA. Although dental associations reassure patients that there is no reason to worry about BPA exposure from dental materials, you could ask your dentist to acquire BPA-free night guards. Otherwise, replace your mouth guard more frequently, since BPA is released more readily from plastic that has undergone wear. Q: I have been treating a scalp problem for many months. Prescription drugs such as clobetasol, ketoconazole shampoo and fluocinonide each help, but do not clear it … Continue reading

Mentor Fulbright Scholar to study way to treat Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on August 20th, 2012

By Janet Podolak JPodolak@News-Herald.com @jpodolakatwork Maribeth Joeright/MJoeright@News-Herald.com Patrick Chirdon of Mentor has earned a year of study in Switzerland as a Fulbright Scholar. One day Patrick Chirdon's name may be linked with a cure for Parkinson's disease, which today affects about 3 percent of the older population. The Mentor man, who recently graduated with honors from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, is off to Switzerland next month as a Fulbright Scholar to continue research he began in Northeast Ohio. Chirdon found evidence that a thyrotropin-releasing hormone, called TRH, protects brain cells in a way that could make it an effective treatment against Parkinson's disease. But it's the mice in Switzerland, not its storied scenery, that has excited Chirdon the most. The laboratory where he'll work is the Brain Mind Institute at the Ecole Polytechinque Federale de Lausanne (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) the only one in the world to develop a laboratory rat with a gene specific to his area of study. "Their rat model is the only one to have the specific gene mutation (LRRK2) that's recognized as the most common genetic cause of Parkinson's," he said. "I've come to the conclusion that drugs based on … Continue reading

Stem cell tranplant decision due in Venice

Posted: Published on August 20th, 2012

The toddler, Celeste Carrer, suffers from muscular atrophy or progressive muscle wastage. In the past 18 months she has had several injections of stem cells taken from the bone marrow of her mother Elisabetta that reportedly enabled to her to move her head, arms and legs after near paralysis. The treatments were carried out by paediatrician Dr Mario Andolina at Brescia Hospital in Italy's north in conjunction with the Stamina Foundation, a non-profit organisation established in 2009 to promote stem cell research. However the child's treatment was stopped in May after Turin prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello launched an investigation into medical staff at the non-profit foundation. Police raided the hospital's laboratories while agents from the Agenzia del Farmaco, the national drug agency, blocked the "collection, transport, manipulation, cultivation, storage and administration of human cells" at the hospital and foundation. "The block on Brescia will unfortunately cause the death of several patients," said Dr Andolina."The therapy annoys people because the stem cell treatment is practically free apart from a bone marrow extraction from relatives. Traditional cures on the other hand cost thousands of euros." Elisabetta Carrer and her husband won legal approval in January 2011 to begin their child's transplants and are … Continue reading
