WEST HAVEN, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- NanoViricides, Inc. (OTC BB: NNVC) (the "Company") announced today that an anti-influenza drug candidate under its FluCide program is effective when given orally. The Company has received information that a FluCide drug candidate designed for oral administration has shown very strong efficacy in corresponding animal studies. This information was received from the contract laboratory that performed the studies, namely, KARD Scientific, Inc. The studies involved the same highly lethal animal model the Company has continued to use for its influenza drug development program. The Company is awaiting data from the studies and intends to release additional information as the data are analyzed and studied. We are pleasantly surprised that the modifications that we have been studying for the development of a nanoviricide that can be orally effective have indeed succeeded, said Anil R. Diwan, PhD, President of the Company. Molecules that nanomedicines are comprised of are notoriously difficult to develop into orally available drugs. This is indeed a coup for our nanomedicine technologies, he further explained. We are very excited by the success of this oral administration study and look forward to the data, said Randall W. Stem cells may prevent post-injury arthritis

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Aug. 10, 2012) Duke researchers may have found a promising stem cell therapy for preventing osteoarthritis after a joint injury. Injuring a joint greatly raises the odds of getting a form of osteoarthritis called post-traumatic arthritis, or PTA. There are no therapies yet that modify or slow the progression of arthritis after injury. Researchers at Duke University Health System have found a very promising therapeutic approach to PTA using a type of stem cell, called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), in mice with fractures that typically would lead to them developing arthritis. Their findings could lead to a therapy that would be used after joint injury and before signs of significant osteoarthritis. The scientists thought the stem cells would work to prevent PTA by altering the balance of inflammation and regeneration in knee joints, because these stem cells have beneficial properties in other regions of the body. "The stem cells were able to prevent post-traumatic arthritis," said Farshid Guilak, Ph.D., director of orthopaedic research at Duke and senior author of the study. The study was published on August 10 in Cell Transplantation. The researchers also thought that a type of mice bred for their super-healing properties would probably fare better … Continue reading

Russell Brand made drugs documentary to help addicts

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012

Russell Brand felt compelled to open up about his drugs battle for a new UK documentary in a bid to inspire addicts to embark on "abstinence-based recovery". The British funnyman fought substance abuse and alcohol addiction for many years, but turned his back on drugs in 2002. He looks back on his health battle in new show Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, and he admits the 2011 death of his friend Amy Winehouse prompted him to film the programme - but he also wanted to highlight how addicts can address their issues by abstaining from drugs rather than using treatments such as methadone. Speaking on BBC's Newsnight show on Friday, he says, "Perhaps that (Winehouse's death) was a catalyst in my decision to make the documentary but primarily it was because I wanted more people to be aware of the possibility of abstinence-based recovery, which I believe to be the true solution to the problem and disease of alcoholism and addiction. "It's having a program and a method to deal with a life free from drugs." Brand has also called on officials in the UK to overhaul the laws on drug use in the country. He adds, "I think … Continue reading

IOC official: Jamaican sprinters should expect more drugs tests

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012

LONDON (Reuters) - Jamaican athletes, who have dominated the sprint events at the London Olympics should now expect more visits by drugs testers, former anti-doping chief Dick Pound said on Saturday. Usain Bolt stormed to victory in both the 100 and 200 meters with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce snatching gold in the women's 100 as the Caribbean island consolidated its domination of the blue riband events. "No, they are one of the groups that are hard to test, it is (hard) to get in and find them and so forth," former World Anti-Doping Agency chief Pound told Reuters Television when asked whether he was happy with the way Jamaica tested its athletes. "I think they can expect, with the extraordinary results that they have had, that they will be on everybody's radar," said Pound, an International Olympic Committee member. Jamaica won a clean sweep in the men's 200 with Yohan Blake and Warren Weir winning silver and bronze behind Bolt. Blake was also second to Bolt in the 100 and the duo also combined with Nesta Carter and Michael Frater to retain the 4x100 relay title in a world record time. It was Bolt's third gold for the second successive Games. Veronica … Continue reading

The People's Pharmacy: Peppermint, probiotics may help treat IBS

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012

By: BY JOE GRAEDON AND TERESA GRAEDON | Special correspondents Published: August 12, 2012 Updated: August 12, 2012 - 12:00 AM Q: I have had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for two years. I have constipation (can't "go" for a week). When I finally can go, I can't stop. At that point, the stool is soft and runny. I also have cramps, bloating, painful gas and hemorrhoids. When my IBS flares up, it is quite debilitating. I know there are some prescription drugs I could take, but the side effects worry me. Are there any natural remedies for this condition? I'd be grateful for any information you may have about this disorder. A: Millions of people suffer from symptoms of IBS as you have described them. It can be difficult to diagnose because there is no obvious cause. Celiac disease (an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, rye and barley) always should be ruled out with a blood test. Several natural approaches have scientific support. Enteric-coated peppermint oil has been shown helpful in controlled trials (BMJ online, Nov. 13, 2008). Probiotics and soluble fiber (psyllium) also appear to ease symptoms (Clinical Evidence, Jan. 6, 2012). Q: Recently, you discussed how to … Continue reading

Osco pharmacy will close Monday

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012

MICHIGAN CITY - The Osco pharmacy is scheduled to close Monday, just days after the Jewel-Osco corporate announcement that the Franklin Street store will close Oct. 8. "We are letting our customers know that the pharmacy is closing Aug. 13, so they have time to make other arrangements," said Karen May, director of external communications for the supermarket chain. On Thursday, company representatives told employees that the Jewel-Osco store will close. The announcement took employees, customers and city officials by surprise. Jewel-Osco does not own the building. May said the decision to close was a "business decision," and no decision has been made about the future of the property. Stem cell cure for implants under research at Toronto hospital

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2012

TORONTO To arthritis patients, they still seem like wonders of modern medicine: artificial hip and knee implants that curb chronic pain. In fact, 14,000 Canadians a year receive hip replacements and more than 21,000 undergo knee replacements, the numbers soaring over the last decade. If Dr. Nizar Mahomed and colleagues at the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto succeed with fascinating new research, however, such surgery will eventually become a thing of the past. The operations are, in fact, anything but panaceas, never really restoring people to their healthiest state, and often requiring replacement when the implant wears out, acknowledges Dr. Mahomed, head of orthopedics at the UHNs Toronto Western Hospital. With those limitations in mind, the UHN is pursuing research that aims to find a biological cure for joints decimated by osteo-arthritis, the most common form of the disease. Most dazzling among several experiments is a project that uses stem cells to create bone and cartilage, which researchers hope can be turned into a sort of organic joint implant that would fuse with existing tissue and regenerate diseased knees and hips. Theoretically, the limits imposed on artificial joint-replacement patients would be forgotten. If we can find biological repair options, … Continue reading
