Details Published on Friday, 27 July 2012 00:00 STEM cell therapy is being eyed to cure the neck and back pains and other illnesses of former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo, alternative medicine doctor Antonia Park said yesterday. Arroyo went to Parks Green and Young Health and Wellness Center in Tagaytay City yesterday morning for cleansing and alternative healing. A guard at the La Vista Subdivision in Quezon City, who requested anonymity, said Arroyo left the subdivision at around 7:30 a.m., accompanied by a few staff and a personal nurse. She rode a white Nissan Patrol and her convoy included a gray Toyota Land Cruiser and a police escort. Arroyo was granted bail Wednesday by a Pasay City court after finding that the electoral sabotage case against her was weak. She posted a P1-million cash bond. Stem cell treatment involves the introduction of new adult stem cells into the damaged tissue in order to treat a disease or injury. The ability of new cells to regenerate is seen as having significant potential to replace diseased areas of the body, with minimal risk of rejection and side effects. Park, in a statement distributed to the media, said Arroyo complained … Continue reading

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Announces Publication Demonstrating Enhanced Survival with ZEVALIN in Premier Medical Journal …

Posted: Published on July 26th, 2012

HENDERSON, Nev.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Spectrum Pharmaceuticals (SPPI), a biotechnology company with fully integrated commercial and drug development operations with a primary focus in hematology and oncology, announced today publication of positive long-term clinical data for ZEVALIN (ibritumomab tiuxetan) Injection in patients with advanced, relapsed follicular non-Hodgkins lymphoma (fNHL). The data, published in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology, showed that addition of ZEVALIN following fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, rituximab (FCR) conditioning and nonmyeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation (NST) resulted in a significantly improved 6-year overall survival (OS) estimate of 80% (95% CI, 41%-95%) in chemotherapy refractory patients, thereby overcoming a strong negative prognostic factor that typically precludes these patients from receiving other treatment options. As reported in the literature, following three episodes of relapsed disease, patients with chemorefractory disease have a median survival of 1.5 years.1 The clinical trial data were presented most recently at the 53rd American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting in December 2011. It is very encouraging to see the publication of long-term clinical data showing that ZEVALIN's usage in this allogeneic transplantation regimen can contribute to improved overall survival in the abysmal prognostic group of patients with disease progression after multiple chemotherapy regimens and in some … Continue reading

Continue reading

Sexual side effects from finasteride can last longer than expected

Posted: Published on July 26th, 2012

How many men would willingly trade in their sex drive for a full head of hair? For some, that might seem like a deal with the devil. Evidence is accumulating, though, that at least a few men make such a Faustian exchange when they accept a prescription for finasteride. This medication is used to reverse male pattern baldness (as Propecia) or control the symptoms of prostate enlargement (as Proscar). A related drug, dutasteride (Avodart), is also used to treat an enlarged prostate. These drugs work by blocking the conversion of the male hormone testosterone to its byproduct dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Research has shown that DHT contributes to both male pattern baldness and prostate gland growth. Blocking DHT production can help men hang on to their hair longer as well as keep their prostates from expanding. The problem is that there are side effects. The most notable are decreased libido, trouble with ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. These are thought to be uncommon, however, and physicians have assumed that they would disappear once the drug was discontinued. The official prescribing information for Propecia is confusing on this matter. On the one hand, doctors are told that sexual side effects resolve when the drug … Continue reading

Many synthetic drugs remain legal despite 'bath salts' ban

Posted: Published on July 26th, 2012

WASHINGTON -- People are inventing so many new ways to get high that lawmakers can't seem to keep up. Over the past two years, the U.S. has seen a surge in the use of synthetic drugs made of legal chemicals that mimic the dangerous effects of cocaine, amphetamines and other illegal stimulants. The drugs are often sold at small, independent stores in misleading packaging that suggests common household items like bath salts, incense and plant food. But the substances inside are powerful, mind-altering drugs that have been linked to bizarre and violent behavior across the country. Law enforcement officials refer to the drugs collectively as "bath salts," though they have nothing in common with the fragrant toiletries used to moisturize skin. President Barack Obama signed a bill into law earlier this month that bans the sale, production and possession of more than two dozen of the most common bath salt drugs. But health professionals say lawmakers cannot keep pace with bath salt producers, who constantly adjust their chemical formulations to come up with new synthetic drugs that aren't covered by new laws. Experts who have studied the problem estimate there are more than 100 different bath salt chemicals in circulation. … Continue reading

Fewer teens using illegal drugs

Posted: Published on July 26th, 2012

26 July 2012 Last updated at 06:49 ET Teenagers in England are shunning drink and drugs for a cleaner lifestyle, say health officials. A survey of 6,500 children aged between 11 and 15 showed the numbers taking drugs, smoking and drinking alcohol had all fallen over the past decade. The NHS Health and Social Care Information Centre figures found 17% had tried drugs at least once in 2011, compared with 29% in 2001. The team said youngsters appeared to be living increasingly healthy lifestyles. The survey, which questions a selection of children at English secondary schools, is carried out every year to monitor reported use of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. The latest poll, carried out between September and December last year, found the number of children at each age who said they had taken drugs in the preceding 12 months was down. Among 15-year-olds, the number fell from 39% in 2001 to 23% in 2011. Only 3% of 11-year-olds had taken drugs. Cannabis was the most commonly used drug, although its was also down.
