Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

New pharmacy for Crewkerne 6:50am Saturday 4th August 2012 in News A NEW pharmacy opens in Crewkerne next Monday, August 6. The late-night pharmacy at Crewkerne Health Centre will open seven days a week. It has been developed inside the medical centre and will be officially opened by the GP partners there. The pharmacy is open to all, not just patients of the medical centre, and a pharmacist will always be available to offer advice on medicines and minor ailments. Andy McKee, pharmacy manager at the health centre, said: The team and I are really excited about the opening of our new pharmacy and were looking forward to providing an excellent service for all our new patients. In addition to the usual prescription dispensing, other free services available at the pharmacy include a free prescription collection and delivery service, emergency contraception, treatment for minor illnesses, medicine reviews with a pharmacist to help patients get the most from their medicines, and much more. Pharmacy coop for elderly eyed by OSCA head

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Office of Senior Citizens Affairs is planning to run a cooperative pharmacy among the 60,000 elderly persons in the city as a way to make their remaining years more meaningful and fruitful. Rolando Dodong Llaguno said if each of the senior citizens would just contribute an amount for their capital investment, he is sure that their cooperative can easily start the pharmacy business. According to Llaguno, aside from availing cheaper prices for medicines and drugs, the senior citizens may also earn from their shares of the cooperatives income. Llaguno said he will work hard for the realization of his plan and he is hopeful that his fellow senior citizens would not hesitate to give their shares. Those who give bigger shares of stocks will also have much bigger proceeds. When Llaguno was appointed by Mayor Michael Rama to head the OSCA several months ago, he quickly announced his plan to help the senior citizens to earn by encouraging them to join cooperatives. Llaguno claims he has knowledge on how to run a cooperative that is why he wishes that it can be implemented among the senior citizens organizations in the city. Each of the … Continue reading

Fears over 'stem cell tourism' Save

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

Aug. 5, 2012, 3 a.m. A GROWING number of overseas clinics touting stem cell therapy for conditions ranging from sexual disorders to HIV are targeting Australia, where such treatments are restricted. Australian scientists have raised concerns about so-called ''stem cell tourism'', saying many of the treatments offered are unproven, untested and potentially deadly. The Swiss firm Fetal Cell Technologies International has been advertising in Australia since last year and Emcell, based in Ukraine, started promoting its services last month. It is estimated as many as 200 Australians have travelled overseas for the therapy. The secretary for science policy at the Australian Academy of Science, Bob Williamson, said he empathised with the desperation of seriously ill people but warned against the unproven therapies, which can cost up to $60,000. ''The therapies are almost all untested and unproven and sometimes they have killed people,'' Professor Williamson said. The Sun-Herald's calls to Emcell's Melbourne office were not returned. Stem Cells Australia's Megan Munsie, who is conducting a study into stem cell tourism with Monash University, said many people she interviewed were unaware of the risks of therapy overseas. ''We're not talking about rubbing something into your skin or taking a capsule, we are … Continue reading

Stem Cell Therapy Space Worth Review for Investors

Advances continue to be made in the field of regenerative medicine, with many products and procedures being made possible from stem cell therapy. While large companies are making headway in this area, many small companies are just as active, raising much-needed funds through the capital markets. The main challenge all of these companies face is convincing naysayers that their research and subsequent results are ethical. There has been much ado about regenerative medicine efforts that involve stem cells. This has especially been the case for research and therapy involving human embryonic stem cells. For this reason, investors who may be bullish about the industry may avoid these stocks. The stem cell market is expected to grow to be a $5.1 billion industry by 2014. One of the reasons stem cell research is important to these companies is that it can help them grow their pipelines, according to a research report on the industry Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine: Benchmarking Analysis of Big … Continue reading

Is it drug manufacturing or the practice of medicine? Stem cell therapy debate just getting started

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

The latest round of a stem cell debate may have concluded, but as far as the lawyers representing an orthopedics company that has offered stem cell treatments are concerned, its a long way from over. The lawyers representing Colorado-based Regenerative Science said they were filing a notice of appeal this week after a U.S. District Court judges ruling in favor of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that its stem cell therapy is a drug. The case is being closely watched by everyone with a stake or an interest in the use of stem cells in medicine and could have significant ramifications for stem cell entrepreneurs who dont believe their procedures amount to a drug or biologic. Regenerative Science Colorado-based Regnerative Sciences Regenexx procedure is presented as an alternative to traditional surgery that can treat fractures that have failed to heal, joint cartilage problems, partial tears of tendons, muscles, or ligaments, among other problems. It works like this: A physician takes a small bone marrow sample from the back of the patients hip through a needle. Blood samples are taken from a vein in the patients arm. The samples are sent to the Regenerative laboratory where the mesenchymal stem cells … Continue reading

UCB Earnings Fall but Guides Up

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

UCB SA (UCBJF) posted first-half 2012 adjusted earnings of 1.09 (approx. $1.40) per share, down 25% from the year-ago earnings. The decline in earnings was attributable to higher operating expenses. Half-yearly sales increased 2% on a reported basis and decreased 2% at constant exchange rates (:CER). Revenues primarily comprise of sales of Cimzia, Vimpat, Neupro and Keppra. Cimzia (Crohns disease and rheumatoid arthritis) sales went up 46% to 209 million during the period, and Vimpat (epilepsy) sales came in at 150 million, reflecting an increase of 54%. Neupro, which is marketed as a treatment for Parkinsons disease and restless legs syndrome, recorded sales of 54 million, up 20% from the year-ago sales. Neupro was launched in the US for the aforementioned indications in July 2012. However, sales of Keppra, another epilepsy treatment, declined 12% to 445 million in the first half of 2012. Sales were hurt by generic competition primarily in North America and Europe. Despite the decline, the drug accounted for 26% of the total revenues recorded by UCB in the first half of 2012. The combined sales of the other three drugs Cimzia, Vimpat and Neupro accounted for about 24% of total revenue in the first half of … Continue reading

The right treatment is necessary to overcome a stroke

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

In this week's Keys to Caring, a stroke can be detrimental to your health and can have lasting affects if you don't get the right treatment. People who suffer from a stroke may develop weaknesses in parts of their body and in many cases, could have speech problems. The good news is medical experts say there are several different types of treatment to choose from, including medication strategies or the use of modern technology like arm and leg stimulation devices. But the most critical thing to do is seek help immediately. I think it's critical in today's time to seek out therapists specifically geared towards treating stroke patients, because they can often guide the patient as to the best treatments and what's available out there now and in the near future, explained Raymond Reichwein, Stroke Program Director for Penn State Hershey Medical Center. A few of those therapists include a speech pathologist or an occupational therapist. At home rehab programs are also available. More: The right treatment is necessary to overcome a stroke … Continue reading

Vaccinate your pets #2 [erv]

Vaccinate your pets #1 Apparently, this summer is going to be a banner year for West Nile Virus. Im not an insect person, so I have no idea how we have mosquitoes when we have had no rain in forever and surging temperatures every day (mosquitoes can lay eggs in dust and dried up grass?), but its shaping up to be a bad year for West Nile. Bad is relative, though. A bad year for West Nile in humans isnt really that bad (compared to other things), so there is not much motivation to formulate a human West Nile vaccine. Thats not true for horses, however. Mosquito-born illnesses like West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis virus have a 30-40% and 75-90% mortality rate, respectively, in horses. So, we have anti-West Nile and anti-EEE vaccines that provide protection for ~95% of horses, with two doses. Of course, for the vaccines to work, you have to give them to your horses. Unvaccinated Glenn County horse has West Nile virus A horse from an area near Orland has been diagnosed with West Nile virus equine infection, the first case diagnosed in Glenn County in almost eight years, and is not likely to survive, … Continue reading
