Caffeine helps Parkinson’s patients move: study

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

Drinking coffee may help people with Parkinsons disease move with greater ease, although getting steady jolts of caffeine doesnt appear to alleviate the daytime sleepiness that affects certain patients, a study suggests. In the Canadian-led study, researchers set out to see if caffeine could help overcome whats called daytime somnolence, a symptom that affects some patients with the progressive neurological disease. While they didnt find an appreciable wake-up effect among subjects taking caffeine, the researchers were surprised to find that javas main ingredient appeared to enhance patients mobility. What was significant was the movement improvement, said principal investigator Dr. Ronald Postuma, a neurologist at McGill University Health Centres research institute. And this was present both on motor symptoms, but also on the objective scoring in the motor exam. To conduct the study, 61 people with Parkinsons disease who showed symptoms of daytime sleepiness and some motor impairment were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo pill or a caffeine tablet. Participants chosen for the study were not big coffee drinkers on average, they drank only about one cup per day. Those in the treatment group took a pill containing 100 milligrams of caffeine twice daily for three weeks, then 200 … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy boy never gives up Save

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

Aug. 2, 2012, 11:46 a.m. DANIEL Fairclowgh has never let cerebral palsy stop him doing what he loves and is encouraging those with the condition to do the same and never give up. National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week, from July 30 to August 5, is an opportunity for the strength and needs of people like Daniel to be put in the spotlight. Daniel was born with the physical condition which affects the movement on the left-hand side of his body. Having the condition causes the Falcon Primary School student to experience weakness, stiffness and sometimes involuntary movements which can often cause tightness and pain in his left arm. Daniels mum Sandra Lavender said she first noticed something was wrong when he was four months old and his left hand seemed to be clenched. At six months Daniel was diagnosed with dystonic hemiplegia which is the most common form of cerebral palsy affecting more than one million children under 21 worldwide. For most people with cerebral palsy the cause is unknown but Ms Lavender said it can be caused by lack of oxygen to the baby's brain before or during pregnancy. According to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance the most common cause … Continue reading

Chief Minister denies French deception

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has confirmed she met the woman behind the Canberra Hospital data tampering scandal during a 2010 holiday in France. In April the staffer admitted changing data to make treatment times in the emergency department look better. She has since resigned. Ms Gallagher says while on leave she stayed with her her sister in France, who was also on holiday there. Ms Gallagher says the staffer, a friend of her sister, also visited. "I have provided all of this information to the Auditor General. I have provided this information to the Solicitor General and I sought advice around how to handle this going forward and from my point of view I've made that information clear," she said. "The investigation has happened and it's cleared me of any involvement in any direct or indirect way and I think that gets lost in all of this." But the ACT Opposition has accused the Chief Minister of deceiving the public. Liberal's Jeremy Hanson says Ms Gallagher has not been up-front. "Why was she hiding this personal relationship? What else is there that Katy Gallagher hasn't told us about this scandal?" he said. See the original post: Chief Minister denies French … Continue reading

Cancer Stem Cells May Drive Tumor Growth

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Cancer / Oncology Also Included In: Stem Cell Research;Biology / Biochemistry Article Date: 02 Aug 2012 - 2:00 PDT Current ratings for: Cancer Stem Cells May Drive Tumor Growth 4.25 (4 votes) Papers on all three studies appeared online on Wednesday, two in Nature and one in Science. In all three studies, the teams used genetic cell-marking techniques to track cell lineage and show that a restricted cell population appears to be the source of new tumor cells, in much the same way as stem cells are the "master builders" of new healthy cells. GBM is a type of brain cancer that is currently considered incurable. It is a fast-growing tumor with a median survival of about 15 months. Although initially it responds to chemotherapy, the cancer nearly always comes back. In their study, Parada and colleagues used genetically engineered mice bred to develop GBM and found that the resting tumor cells act more like stem cells. They used a genetic marker that labels healthy adult neural stem cells, but not their more specialized descendants, to see if it would do the same for cancer stem cells in GBM. When they did so, they … Continue reading

Stem cell findings point toward new cancer treatments

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

When cancers are treated, tumors may shrink but then come roaring back. Now studies on three different types of tumors suggest a key reason why: The cancers are fueled by stem cells that chemotherapy drugs don't kill. The findings made by independent research teams that used mice to study tumors of the brain, intestines and skin could change the approach to fighting cancers in humans, experts said. Properties of these so-called cancer stem cells can be investigated so researchers can devise strategies for killing them off, said Luis F. Parada, a molecular geneticist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and senior author of one of the studies published Wednesday. "Everything has a soft underbelly once you understand it well," Parada said. "With all the modern molecular techniques and modern approaches we have, we should be able to find their soft underbelly." Cancer researchers have long suspected and some pioneering studies have strongly suggested that specific cells within tumors are responsible for their continued growth. But the earlier experiments hadn't convinced everyone, and the hypothesis has been controversial. The three papers published by the journals Nature and Science "really should seal the deal," said cancer biologist Owen … Continue reading

Kidney removal, erectile dysfunction link

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

SAN DIEGO, July 31 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers identified a link between patients who undergo complete kidney removal and erectile dysfunction. The study involved 432 patients who underwent surgery for renal (kidney) cell carcinoma. Senior author Dr. Ithaar Derweesh -- associate professor of surgery, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and urologic surgeon at University of California, San Diego Health System -- and colleagues said one group underwent complete removal of the kidney while the other had kidney-sparing surgery. Sexual function was assessed pre- and post-operatively with a sexual health questionnaire known as the International Index of Erectile Function. The study, published online in the British Journal of Urology International, found a dramatic yet delayed effect. Patients who had a total kidney removal were 3.5 times more likely to develop erectile dysfunction approximately six years after surgery, compared to those who had kidney reconstruction. "This is the first study in medical literature to suggest that surgery for kidney removal can negatively impact erectile function while partial kidney removal can protect sexual function," Derweesh said in a statement.
