Study finds correlation between number of colorectal polyps and genetic mutations

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

Public release date: 31-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Jessica Maki jmaki3@partners.org 617-534-1603 JAMA and Archives Journals CHICAGO Among patients with multiple colorectal polyps, the prevalence of certain gene mutations varied considerably by polyp count, according to a study in the August 1 issue of JAMA. "Patients with multiple colorectal adenomas [polyps] may carry germline [those cells of an individual that have genetic material that could be passed to offspring] mutations in the APC or MUTYH genes," according to background information in the article. The authors write that guidelines for when genetic evaluation should be performed in individuals with multiple colorectal adenomas vary, and data to support such guidelines are limited. Shilpa Grover, M.D., M.P.H., of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the frequency of APC and MUTYH mutations by the number of colorectal adenomas among individuals who had undergone clinical genetic testing. The researchers also studied the relationship between the number of adenomas and age at diagnosis of adenoma and colorectal cancer and the prevalence of pathogenic APC or MUTYH mutations. The study included 8,676 individuals who had undergone full gene sequencing between 2004 and 2011. Individuals with a certain mutation … Continue reading

Scientists pinpoint genetic changes that spell cancer

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) By studying fruit flies, scientists at A*STAR's Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) have successfully devised a fast and cost-saving way to uncover genetic changes that have a higher potential to cause cancer. With this new approach, researchers will now be able to rapidly distinguish the range of genetic changes that are causally linked to cancer (i.e. "driver" mutations) versus those with limited impact on cancer progression. This research paves the way for doctors to design more targeted treatment against the different cancer types, based on the specific cancer-linked mutations present in the patient. This study published in the journal Genes & Development could help advance the development of personalised medicine in cancer care and treatment. The era of genomic sequencing has generated an unparalleled wealth of information on the complexity of genetic changes that occur as cancer develops and progresses. "Many genetic changes arise in cancer cells and changes continue to accumulate during the progression of disease to metastatic cancer[1]. The current challenge is to understand which of the many genetic changes are important drivers of disease progression" said Dr. Stephen Cohen, Principal Investigator at IMCB and team leader of this paper. Though very … Continue reading

Stem cell therapy could offer new hope for defects and injuries to head, mouth

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) In the first human study of its kind, researchers found that using stem cells to re-grow craniofacial tissues -- mainly bone -- proved quicker, more effective and less invasive than traditional bone regeneration treatments. Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research partnered with Ann Arbor-based Aastrom Biosciences Inc. in the clinical trial, which involved 24 patients who required jawbone reconstruction after tooth removal. Patients either received experimental tissue repair cells or traditional guided bone regeneration therapy. The tissue repair cells, called ixmyelocel-T, are under development at Aastrom, which is a U-M spinout company. "In patients with jawbone deficiencies who also have missing teeth, it is very difficult to replace the missing teeth so that they look and function naturally," said Darnell Kaigler, principal investigator and assistant professor at the U-M School of Dentistry. "This technology and approach could potentially be used to restore areas of bone loss so that missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants." William Giannobile, director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and chair of the U-M Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, is co-principal investigator on the project. The … Continue reading

Spinal-Cord Injuries: FDA Approves Cell-Regeneration Therapy

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

Marc Buoniconti has been paralyzed from the neck down for 27 years after a college football injury at South Carolina's The Citadel. His Hall-of-Fame linebacker father, Nick Buoniconti, triumphed on the football field as a Boston Patriot and Miami Dolphin, but finding a cure for his son's paralysis has been the toughest game of all, until now. Father and son have seen the fruits of their joint venture -- the Miami Project Cure Paralysis -- to help the 300,000 Americans living with spinal-cord injuries. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a phase 1 clinical trial to evaluate the safety of transplanting human Schwann cells to treat patients with paralysis. It is the first such trial in the world. Researchers believe these cells, which are found in the peripheral nervous system and are responsible for sending electrical signals, might be the key to eventual cures. "We believe today's announcement is just as important to our field as man's first step on the moon was to the space program," said neurosurgeon Dr. Barth Green, co-founder and chairman of The Miami Project. Eight patients with acute spinal-cord injuries, or those within one month of paralysis, will be injected with their own Schwann … Continue reading

Approach stem cell therapy with caution, doctors say

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

Stem cell therapy has been building quite the reputation as a costly but groundbreaking medical procedure that promises to restore youth and revitalize those who choose to undergo treatment. However, doctors from the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and the Department of Health (DOH) have advised the public to be careful about choosing where to go for therapy. Ang proseso nito talagang mabusisi at professional dapat ang gumagawa nito, at dapat sa malaking medical center lang, molecular biologist and stem cell therapy expert Dr. Sam Bernal said in an interview Friday with Susan Enriquez on GMA News Unang Hirit. Likewise, in a report on GMA News TVs Balitanghali on July 9, PMA vice-president Dr. Leo Olarte said kailangan ay pumunta ka diyan sa kilalang doctor or kilalang hospital which is known for honesty, competence, credibility. Bernal explained that human organs originated from stem cells. Go here to read the rest: Approach stem cell therapy with caution, doctors say … Continue reading

$1.8 million saved on prescriptions with Medicare

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

WASHINGTON - More than 6,000 people in Hawaii with Medicare saved more than $1.8 million on prescription drugs in the first six months of 2012, according to an announcement Monday by Rep. Mazie Hirono on Medicares 47th Anniversary. The savings come from changes made in the health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act, that close the coverage gap in prescription drugs known as the "donut hole." This gap is created when Medicare recipients reach their coverage limit and are forced to pay the full cost of their prescription drugs. "Forty-seven years ago, when Medicare was signed into law, a solemn promise was made to our kupuna that we would not let them go without health care coverage," said Hirono. "Today, the health care reform law is continuing that commitment by helping put more money in our seniors wallets during these tough economic times and closing the prescription drug donut hole." Medicare beneficiaries in the "donut hole" are receiving a 50 percent discount on covered brand-name drugs, and a 14 percent discount on generic drugs. Discounts for prescription drugs in this donut hole will continue to increase each year until 2020, when the coverage gap will be fully closed. Since … Continue reading
