The AFP have seized half a ton of illicit drugs and arrested seven people in their largest ever ice haul. Part of the $500 million drugs haul that police say was concealed in 100 terracotta pots. Picture: Tim Hunter Source: The Daily Telegraph ILLEGAL drugs with a street value of half a billion dollars have been seized and seven people arrested in Sydney after a tip-off from US drug agents. More than half a tonne of drugs, including 306kg of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ice, and 252kg of heroin, were seized in Sydney during the operation. Seven people - all Hong Kong nationals - have been arrested. They are expected to face Sydney Local Court later Tuesday. It is the largest seizure of ice and third-largest heroin haul in Australian Federal Police history. The AFP also seized six kilograms of methamphetamine from a 55-year-old mans Green Valley residence. The bust came after US Drug Enforcement Administration agents tipped-off the AFP to an international organised crime syndicate allegedly planning to import illicit drugs into Australia. In January, Customs and Border Protection identified several people believed to be associated with the syndicate and two suspect cargo consignments were targeted. On July … Continue reading

Huge crowds flocked to Splendour in the Grass on its return to Byron Bay. Blainey Woodham TWEED and Byron's top cop has called for "the culture of drug taking at music events" to stop, after more than 400 people were detected with drugs at Splendour in the Grass. Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Superintendent Stuart Wilkins said police were kept busy during the four-day festival with most of their time taken up with drug and alcohol-related issues. "Over 400 people were found in possession of prohibited drugs and that is simply unacceptable," he said. "This culture of drug-taking at music events needs to stop!" Many thousands attended the four-day music festival, which this year returned to its traditional home at Byron Bay's Belongil Fields after being held at Woodford in Queensland for the past two years. The more than 100 additional police brought in from around the state for operation Splendour 2012 were supported by the Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, Public Order and Riot Squad, Operation Support Group and officers from the Alcohol and Licensing Enforcement Command. 31 July 2012 Last updated at 01:05 ET Australian police have seized drugs worth over half a billion dollars and broken up a Hong Kong-based drugs ring. Four Hong Kong nationals and three Australian residents were also arrested in raids in Sydney on Monday. Over half a tonne of drugs, including 306kg (674.61lb) of crystal methamphetamine - also known as ''ice'' - and 252kg of heroin, were seized. The haul is the largest seizure of ''ice'' and the third largest seizure of heroin, police said. The drugs are estimated to be worth A$500m (US$526m; 335m), the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a statement. The raids and arrests followed a year-long investigation. "Countless lives would have been affected had this seizure made its way to Australian streets," Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin told Australian media. He said investigations would continue and more arrests could take place. The investigations into the syndicate began in August 2011 after a tip-off from the US Drug Enforcement Administration, police said. The drugs were found in a shipment of terracotta pots on 19 July. Stem cell therapy could offer new hope for defects and injuries to head, mouth

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2012

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) In the first human study of its kind, researchers found that using stem cells to re-grow craniofacial tissues -- mainly bone -- proved quicker, more effective and less invasive than traditional bone regeneration treatments. Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research partnered with Ann Arbor-based Aastrom Biosciences Inc. in the clinical trial, which involved 24 patients who required jawbone reconstruction after tooth removal. Patients either received experimental tissue repair cells or traditional guided bone regeneration therapy. The tissue repair cells, called ixmyelocel-T, are under development at Aastrom, which is a U-M spinout company. "In patients with jawbone deficiencies who also have missing teeth, it is very difficult to replace the missing teeth so that they look and function naturally," said Darnell Kaigler, principal investigator and assistant professor at the U-M School of Dentistry. "This technology and approach could potentially be used to restore areas of bone loss so that missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants." William Giannobile, director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and chair of the U-M Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, is co-principal investigator on the project. The … Continue reading

Public release date: 30-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Jackie Carr jcarr@ucsd.edu 619-543-6163 University of California - San Diego Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified a link between patients who undergo total nephrectomy - complete kidney removal - and erectile dysfunction. Results from the multi-center study were recently published online in the British Journal of Urology International. "This is the first study in medical literature to suggest that surgery for kidney removal can negatively impact erectile function while partial kidney removal can protect sexual function," said Ithaar Derweesh, MD, senior author, associate professor of surgery, UC San Diego School of Medicine and urologic surgeon at UC San Diego Health System. The retrospective study evaluated two cohorts of men, totaling 432 patients, who underwent surgery for renal cell carcinoma. One group underwent complete removal of the kidney while the other had kidney-sparing surgery. Sexual function was accessed pre- and post-operatively with a sexual health questionnaire known as the International Index of Erectile Function. "What we are seeing is a dramatic yet delayed effect. Approximately six years after surgery, patients who had a total nephrectomy were 3.5 times more likely to develop erectile … Continue reading

Court rules pay-for-delay drug agreements are anti-competitive

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2012

In a win for pharmacies and wholesale drug companies, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that so-called pay-for-delay agreements between brand-name and generic drugmakers should be presumed illegal unless the parties prove otherwise. Decisions by other appellate courts in recent years had upheld such deals as legitimate. Pay-for-delay deals are defined as patent settlements between drugmakers that involve delaying the introduction of equivalent generics. Critics of the negotiations, including the Federal Trade Commission, say the deals violate fair trade and restrict consumer access to low-cost drug alternatives. The 3rd Circuit seems to have gotten it just right: These sweetheart deals are presumptively anti-competitive, FTC Chair Jon Leibowitz said in a statement. Its time for the pharmaceutical companies to return to the side of consumers. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said it was disappointed with the ruling. Patent settlements are a vital aspect of a patent owners ability to protect intellectual property, said Matthew Bennett, PhRMA senior vice president of communications and public affairs. Retaining this ability to manage litigation is particularly critical for research-intensive biopharmaceutical companies, which rely on their patents as a major incentive for the innovative work they do. The 3rd Circuit ruling … Continue reading

Mindreading hormone? A better judge of character with nasal spray?

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2012

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) Ingesting the hormone oxytocin via nasal spray improves the ability to read people's facial expressions. These findings hold great promise for treatment of mental health disorders and drug addiction. In other contexts, oxytocin is already well-known as the "bliss hormone." The hormone is secreted upon stimulation by touch and is known to result in a feeling of calm and physical relaxation. It is also used to induce labour in childbirth and as an aid for women experiencing difficulties in breastfeeding. Oxytocin has also been referred to as a "mindreading" hormone. Recent research findings show that there may be some truth to these claims -- although the mindreading component may have a more down-to-earth explanation. Angry people seemed angrier As part of a research project carried out by Siri Leknes, a research fellow at the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo, 40 healthy students were administered nasal spray containing a dose of either saltwater or oxytocin. They were subsequently shown photographs of faces displaying angry, happy or neutral expressions. Some of the photos showed individuals displaying more "hidden" emotional expressions which tend to be picked up at a more subconscious level. "We found that oxytocin … Continue reading

'Porky' hid drugs in cemeteries

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2012

An alleged boss of the Wellington Nomads hid a stash of thousands of dollars worth of methamphetamine in cemeteries, a court has been told. Paul Peter Mawana Rodgers, known as Porky Rimene, has pleaded guilty to supplying meth between July 2009 and February 2011, offering to supply the drug, conspiring to obstruct the course of justice, money laundering and taking part in a criminal group. He is accused of distributing more than three kilograms of meth - with a street value of $3 million - into the Wellington region. An unnamed witness told the High Court at Wellington on Monday that Rodgers had so many places to bury drugs and money that it was hard to keep track of them, Fairfax reported. The witness said he buried drugs and money at sites around Wellington and Wairarapa, including at a private urupa or cemetery in Masterton. A groundsman at Riverside Cemetery in Masterton also found a container of about $7000 worth of meth. At one stage a bulldozer working on a public track displaced a buried container and they had to use a hired metal detector to find it. The witness said Rodgers told him he would be buried if he … Continue reading
