Duo accused in Vanderburgh pharmacy holdup

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2012

Two Evansville residents robbed a pharmacy Friday of medication that they intended to use to make methamphetamine, according to the Vanderburgh County Sheriffs Office. Jared Matthew Beard, 24, and Lakyra Shabree Johnson, 25, were arrested shortly after the heist at Nations Pharmacy, 4849 Pollack Ave. Sheriffs deputies were dispatched to the business at 5:21 p.m. in response to a holdup alarm. They were told a masked duo had demanded pseudoephedrine. One person displayed a knife. After being given a quantity of the medication, they left in a vehicle. A witness saw the vehicle arrive at the pharmacy and two people wearing masks enter. The witness, deputies said, noticed that the license plate had been deliberately obscured and cleared off the plate to obtain the license number. Shortly after the 5:21 p.m. dispatch, a K9 unit with the sheriffs office stopped the vehicle at Lynn Road and Pollack. Deputies said they recovered medication taken in the robbery, as well as a knife. Evansville Police Department officers assisted in the arrest. According to a sheriffs office news release, Johnson told investigators Beard had attempted to buy pseudoephedrine, which is used to make methamphetamine, at several stores during the day but was refused. … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Generic drug is matter of life or death

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2012

Q: My husband is suffering seizures after being forced to switch to generic levetiracetam (Keppra). I can buy the brand for $735 per month, but at 62 years of age we can't afford to spend this much every month. I am afraid that one day I will lose my husband because of the seizures. This is a matter of life and death. A: Other people with epilepsy have reported seizures after being switched from Keppra to generic levetiracetam. A recent review of 89 studies found that patients with epilepsy sometimes experience seizures when they are switched from brand name to generic or between different generic manufactured products (AHRQ Comparative Effectiveness Reviews, December 2011). It is sometimes possible to get brand-name medication free from the manufacturer if you and your husband qualify for patient assistance. You also might want to explore the possibility of purchasing the brand-name drug from a reliable Canadian pharmacy. You could save quite a bit. Ask your husband's epilepsy specialist whether a ketogenic diet would be beneficial. This alternative approach requires careful medical supervision, but it may lower the amount of medication needed for seizure control. Q: I am taking niacin (1,000 mg) to improve my good … Continue reading

AVI BioPharma Announces Eteplirsen Meets Primary Endpoint, Demonstrating a Significant Increase in Dystrophin at 24 …

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

SOURCE: AVI BioPharma, Inc. BOTHELL, WA--(Marketwire - Apr 2, 2012) - AVI BioPharma, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVII), a developer of RNA-based therapeutics, today announced that treatment with eteplirsen met the primary efficacy endpoint in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase IIb study in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Eteplirsen administered once weekly at 30mg/kg over 24 weeks resulted in a statistically significant (p 0.002) increase in novel dystrophin (22.5% dystrophin-positive fibers as a percentage of normal) compared to no increase in the placebo group. "This study represents a major advance in the field of DMD research as the results indicate that eteplirsen is producing consistent levels of dystrophin, which is the essential protein that these patients need," said Jerry Mendell, M.D., Director of the Centers for Gene Therapy and Muscular Dystrophy at Nationwide Children's Hospital and principal investigator of the Phase IIb study. Dr. Mendell added, "We anticipate that these levels of dystrophin could lead to significant clinical benefit if maintained over a longer course of treatment." In the study, a shorter duration of eteplirsen treatment, 12 weeks, did not show a significant increase in novel dystrophin (0.79% dystrophin-positive fibers as a percentage of normal; p-value NS), despite administration of the … Continue reading

Parents are changing autism research

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

On a recent Sunday, while Walt was baking gluten-free cookies, his mother had to remind him to check the recipe, put the eggs away, and close the refrigerator door. But he navigated the oven and timer just fine, and carefully used a spatula to shift the warm cookies from the baking sheet to the cooling rack. A few minutes later, after a quick, reassuring hug, the 16-year-old resumed the scrapbook he had started that morning, printing out pictures of his favorite Theodore Tugboats, trimming them to fit, and labeling each one. I did so awesome, he said excitedly when he was done. He piled five of the now-cool cookies onto a plate, hurried off into another room, and crooned Christmas carols to calm himself down. Life with Walt alternates between moments of enthusiasm and anxiety, scowls and spontaneous hugs, typical teenage behavior and younger-than-his-age interests. Diagnosed with autism as a preschooler, Walt went through years of temper tantrums, diarrhea, skin scratching, unpredictable behaviors, and obvious physical pain. A few minutes spent at his airy Groton home reveal both that Walt, now 5 feet 6 inches tall, is not a typical teenager, and that he and his family - including two … Continue reading

Sen. Hunter bill to cover Autism headed to Governor

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

LANSING The Michigan Legislature passed legislation Thusday to make providing insurance coverage for autism treatment law, including Sen. Tupac A. Hunters (D-Detroit) bill, Senate Bill 415. Senate Bill 414 sponsored by Sen. Mike Green (R-Mayville) and Senate Bill 981 sponsored by Senator Randy Richardville (R-Monroe) were also passed by the House Thursday. The bills will now be sent to Governor Rick Snyder for his signature into law. This is arguably one of the biggest issues the Legislature has tackled in the last few years, and I am glad we could finally come together, Democrat and Republican, House and Senate, to guarantee that Michigan families receive the autism insurance coverage they deserve, said Senator Hunter. I want to commend the families that have kept up the fight over the last five years in making sure that their childrens voices are being heard here in Lansing and across this state, and am proud that we could finally achieve this victory. Currently less than 15 percent of Michigans children with autism are getting the services they need. Without proper medical insurance coverage, many parents of children with autism are forced to forgo necessary treatments because they cannot afford them. Families also struggle to … Continue reading

France's autism treatment 'shame'

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

2 April 2012 Last updated at 07:16 ET By Hugh Schofield BBC News, Paris In many countries the standard way of treating autistic children is with behavioural therapy - stimulating and rewarding them to develop the skills they need to function in society - but France still puts its faith in psychoanalysis. And an increasing number of parents are now demanding change. For autism campaigners, it is one of the most serious health scandals of our times. How for decades France turned its back on the latest scientific thinking, and treated autism as a form of psychosis. How as a result tens of thousands of children were misdiagnosed - or not diagnosed at all - and consigned to lives of misery. And how to this day in its approach to autism, the French medical establishment continues to believe in the powers of psychiatry and psychoanalysis - long after the rest of the world has switched to alternative methods of treatment. "It is an out-and-out disgrace," according to Daniel Fasquelle, a member of parliament who campaigns on the issue. Today everyone knows that autism is a neuro-developmental problem. It is not a psychosis or mental disorder "Every day I am contacted … Continue reading
