Hair-cell roots of inner ear communicate with brain to regulate sound sensitivity

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

Washington, March 9 (ANI): Researchers have discovered that the hair cells of the inner ear have a previously unknown "root" extension that may allow them to communicate with nerve cells and the brain to regulate sensitivity to sound vibrations and head position. The hair-like structures, called stereocilia, are fairly rigid and are interlinked at their tops by structures called tip-links. When you move your head, or when a sound vibration enters your ear, motion of fluid in the ear causes the tip-links to get displaced and stretched, opening up ion channels and exciting the cell, which can then relay information to the brain, said Anna Lysakowski, professor of anatomy and cell biology at the UIC College of Medicine and principal investigator on the study. The stereocilia are rooted in a gel-like cuticle on the top of the cell that is believed to act as a rigid platform, helping the hairs return to their resting position. Lysakowski and her colleagues were interested in a part of the cell called the striated organelle, which lies underneath this cuticle plate and is believed to be responsible for its stability. Using a high-voltage electron microscope at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research … Continue reading

Pfizer ends Celebrex post-approval safety study

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -- Pfizer Inc. said Friday it is ending a safety study of its pain drug Celebrex because of difficulty finding patients. The trial was designed to measure the effects of Celebrex on patients who were taking the drug to treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Pfizer said it was having trouble enrolling patients in the trial, and the study was not likely to produce meaningful results because patients with the condition tend to use Celebrex for a short time and because the rate of side effects was very low. Sales of Celebrex grew 6 percent to $2.52 billion in 2011, which made it Pfizer's fifth-best-selling drug. It was originally approved in 1998, and Pfizer was required to do the safety study in 2006 after Celebrex was approved as a treatment for juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The company said the Food and Drug Administration released it from its requirement. Shares of Pfizer rose 3 cents to end Friday's session at $21.48. The stock has traded between $16.63 and $22.17 in the past 52 weeks. See more here: Pfizer ends Celebrex post-approval safety study … Continue reading

Narco-themed works explore toll of drug use in the U.S. on Mexico

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

Americans who enjoy using recreational drugs probably don't like to imagine the ripple effects in Mexico: the predatory narco gangs and corrupt cops in Ciudad Jurez, the bullet-riddled bodies and ravaged neighborhoods in Tijuana and Michoacn. But at a recent rehearsal of "Timboctou," a darkly comic, disquieting play set against the backdrop of the Mexican drug wars that's having its world premiere through Sunday at REDCAT, director Martn Acosta reflected on the bloody connective tissue that the experimental drama weaves between Mexico's ruthless narco lords and their naive and insatiable U.S. customers. "I believe it's a question of binational responsibility," said the Mexican director, speaking in Spanish. "I don't think the play analyzes who is responsible. But it assumes there's a very direct link, looking from the Mexican side." "Timboctou," a bilingual, multimedia piece by the precocious 27-year-old Mexican playwright Alejandro Ricao, is one of a proliferating number of plays, movies and television series that address the volatile and complex subject of Mexican narco-terrorism. In it, the fates of a lovelorn Spanish tourist, a well-meaning Mexican official, two rather clueless U.S. dudes on spring break and twin sibling narco-thugs reminiscent of Samuel Beckett's tramps in "Waiting for Godot" all collide … Continue reading

Powers Taylor Law Firm Investigates Pradaxa® Side Effects Lawsuits

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Powers Taylor, LLP, a plaintiffs pharmaceutical law firm, has begun an investigation in potential lawsuits against the manufacturers and distributors of Pradaxa, a prescription drug that was approved to reduce the risk of strokes in high-risk patients. Although the drug was only approved for use in the United States in October 2010, it has already generated an abnormally high number of adverse-event reports. These reports include 260 fatalities from people who have bled to death while using the drug, which have triggered several outcries for a Pradaxa recall. Pradaxa has been shown to inhibit the release of a key protein that is essential to the formation of blood clots. Because of this effect, patients who have ulcers or who suffer internal injuries may suffer much greater blood loss than persons who are not on Pradaxa. This problem is magnified exponentially by the fact that there is no anecdote or reversing agent that can eliminate Pradaxas inhibition of blood clot formation. Some of the Pradaxa bleeding deaths have occurred while the patient was in the hospital, with doctors helpless to reverse Pradaxas effect. Despite mounting evidence of these hazards, which include a January 2012 study in the Archives of Internal … Continue reading

LSD 'may aid alcoholism treatment'

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

Psychedelic drug LSD could be used as an effective method to treat alcoholism, scientists say. The use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), coupled with relapse prevention treatments, could help alcoholics steer clear of the bottle, research published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology suggests. Teri Krebs and Pal-Orjan Johansen, who were performing research fellowships at Harvard Medical School in the US, examined a number of previous studies, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s, and found that a number of clinics used LSD to treat alcoholism with some success. They said they found evidence for a clear and consistent beneficial effect of a low dose of LSD for treating alcohol dependency. They examined 536 participants, across six medical trials, and found that 59% of LSD patients had improved compared to 38% of control patients. Researchers said the positive effects of a single dose of the drug, tested by a standardised assessment of problem alcohol use, appeared to last for up to 12 months. However, they suggested the repeated use of the medication, coupled with preventative treatments, might provide more sustained results. Investigators of one trial which was examined said: "It was rather common for patients to claim significant insights into their problems, … Continue reading

LSD could help treat alcoholism

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

Washington, March 9 (ANI): Taking hallucinogenic drug lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) could help alcoholics give up drinking, according to an analysis of studies performed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. LSD is used mainly as an entheogen, recreational drug, and as an agent in psychedelic therapy. Several decades ago, a number of clinics used LSD to treat alcoholism with some success. But until now, no research has pulled together the results of these trials to document exactly how effective LSD was. Now a new meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials of the drug provides evidence for a clear and consistent beneficial effect of LSD for treating alcohol dependency. Teri Krebs and Pal-Orjan Johansen, both affiliated with the Department of Neuroscience at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway, spotted a gap in the understanding of LSD's potential for alcoholism treatment during research fellowships at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. Krebs and Johansen set out to independently extract data from previous randomised, controlled clinical trials, pooling their results. They identified six eligible trials, all carried out in the late 1960s and early 1970s. These included 536 participants, the vast majority of whom were male in-patients enrolled in alcohol-focused … Continue reading
