New universal platform for cancer immunotherapy

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2012) Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania report this month in Cancer Research a universal approach to personalized cancer therapy based on T cells. It is the first time a system for making an adaptable, engineered T-cell to attack specific tumor types has been proposed, depending on which abnormal proteins, called antigens, are expressed by individual patients' tumor cells. For now, the system is being refined in experiments using healthy donor T cells and animal models of human cancer, with the aim to introduce the personalized cells into patients in the future, explains senior author Daniel J. Powell Jr., Ph.D., a research assistant professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine with Penn's Ovarian Cancer Research Center. Tumor antigens are potential targets of an immune response, and identifying which antigens a patient's tumor cells express would be helpful in designing cancer therapy for that individual. Any mutated protein produced in a tumor cell can act as a tumor antigen. Many tumor cells have surface proteins that are inappropriately expressed for the cell type, or are only normally present during embryonic development. Still other tumor cells display cell surface proteins that are rare or … Continue reading

New medicine helps treat dog cancer

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

A new treatment for cancer in dogs has become available in Australia. Developed by Pfizer Animal Health, the medicine is administered orally and works by killing cancer cells and cutting off the blood supply to skin-based mast cell tumours. The potentially lethal form of canine cancer can appear as wart-like lumps on the surface of the skin. Vet Rod Straw, founder of the Australian Animal Cancer Foundation and the Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre, was one of the first in Australia to use the new treatment. He said one in four dogs developed a tumour at some stage in their life. "When an owner is given the devastating news that their beloved pet has cancer, their primary concern is to limit their dog's day-to-day pain and suffering," Dr Straw said. "This new medicine gives vets and owners the best chance to do this." Dr Straw said before the new treatment vets had to rely on human cancer medicines as the only option for treating mast cell tumours. "Given that these medicines weren't developed with canine cancer in mind, it is only through trial and error that we as vets were able to identify a safe dose and work out how to … Continue reading

The Alliance for Regenerative Medicine Statement on Use of Cell Therapies Not Approved by the Federal Drug …

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire -03/05/12)- The Alliance for Regenerative Medicine issued the following statement today: "An article about stem cell treatments taking place in Texas published by Nature last week is extremely troubling. The article suggests that patients are being administered stem cell treatments that have not been systematically demonstrated to be safe and effective therapies through the established FDA regulatory process. "Cell therapy treatments, including those using adult stem cells, hold the promise of providing patients with treatments and cures for numerous diseases and disabilities. However, FDA regulation is key to ensuring that the treatments available to patients are safe and effective. "The Alliance for Regenerative Medicine (ARM), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote increased funding and development of regenerative medicine products, believes cell therapy and regenerative medicine products, including autologous cell therapy products, must go through the rigorous safety testing that is part of the FDA regulatory process before they can be marketed to the public. These regulations are designed to promote safe collection, manufacture, storage, and use of human cells, and cellular and tissue based products. ARM members comply with these rules because they know that FDA oversight helps to prevent patients from exposure to potentially unsafe … Continue reading

Nuvilex Announces Major Breakthrough in Stem Cell Research

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

SILVER SPRING, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nuvilex, Inc. (OTCQB:NVLX), an emerging biotechnology provider of cell and gene therapy solutions, released information today about the companys cell encapsulation technology and the breakthrough in stem cell research which overcomes specific fundamental challenges faced in stem cell therapyhost rejection and migration of implanted cells away from the target site. Stem cell therapy is believed by many medical researchers as holding a key to treating cancer, Type 1 diabetes mellitus, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Celiac Disease, cardiac failure, muscle damage, neurological disorders, and other chronic, debilitating diseases. There are presently >1,400 registered trials using stem cells that are recruiting patients (ClinicalTrials.gov). The encapsulation technology being advanced allows live stem cells to be implanted into robust, flexible and permeable capsules where they can replicate inside the capsules at the target site free from attack by the bodys immune system and free to undergo natural changes to become the appropriate cell type needed. The Goldman Small Cap Research report, issued February 29, 2012, noted some inherent difficulties encountered in stem cell treatments, such as keeping stem cells alive for significant periods of time, potential rejection of the cells and subsequent destruction by the recipients immune system, and the … Continue reading

Lundbeck A/S (LUN), the Nordic regions second-largest drugmaker, said its anti-alcoholism treatment nalmefene helped patients cut consumption by an average of 66 percent in three clinical trials. Results of the final stage of clinical trials showed nalmefene helped curb drinking more than a placebo and medical advice, Lundbeck said in a presentation at a medical meeting in Prague today. Nalmefene users reported a 64 percent to 79 percent drop in total alcohol intake, compared with 49 percent to 64 percent for those on placebo, Copenhagen-based Lundbeck said. Heavy drinking is Europes second-largest risk factor for poor health. Lundbeck plans to offer nalmefene as a treatment option to those who suffer from alcohol dependency and are turned off by abstinence, which is advocated by most experts, said Anders Gersel Pedersen, head of Lundbecks research and development. About 70 percent of patients who enrolled in the clinical trials for nalmefene had never received treatment, Pedersen said in a telephone interview. It changes the whole paradigm around the conversation about alcohol use … Continue reading

Joe Biden visit amid drugs debate

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

5 March 2012 Last updated at 06:00 ET US Vice-President Joe Biden is visiting Mexico and Honduras amid calls by regional leaders for a new debate on decriminalising drug use. Several Central American presidents, faced with rising drug violence in their countries, have spoken recently of the need for a policy change. The US remains opposed to decriminalisation, US officials say. In Mexico, Mr Biden will meet President Felipe Calderon and the three candidates in July's presidential vote. He then travels to Honduras, where he will hold talks with President Porfirio Lobo and fellow leaders from El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Last week, the Organization of American States (OAS) warned that drug gangs were posing a growing threat to democracy in Latin America. Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina, a retired army general, has ordered his nation's army to join the fight against the trafficking gangs but also called for the possible decriminalisation of drugs. President Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica told Bloomberg last week that legalising drugs in central America deserved "serious debate". Dan Restrepo, the top Latin American official in the White House, said that Mr Biden expected a "robust conversation" about the security problems posed by … Continue reading

Drugs smuggling cases declining, says official

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

Drug traffickers devise new and strange ways to smuggle narcotics, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) director Colonel Ibrahim Issa al-Buainain has said. We once arrested an Asian man who had concealed drugs inside dates. Some smugglers put drugs in honey jars or hide it in the collar of their clothes. They also put them in womens clothes. However, the most notorious way of smuggling the contraband is swallowing drugs packed as capsules. Sometimes, they burst open in the smugglers stomach, leading to the carriers death. Such an incident happened two months ago in a Gulf state, al-Buainain said in an interview to Arabic daily Arrayah. Even though there are a few addicts in the country, the situation in Qatar is very different from other countries, the DEA director said. Addicts around the world can be seen roaming the streets and sometimes occupying the squares and public places. The number of addicts in Qatar is limited and they are unnoticeable. The Qatari society is a conservative one that takes care of the addict. The government and its various institutions shoulder the responsibility of treating them, al-Buainain noted. Drugs are substances that deprive the user of his reasoning capacity. They can be classified … Continue reading
