Nadira Gunatilleke Investigations conducted by the Health Ministry have discovered that the two drugs provided to De Soysa Maternity Hospital are of high quality and nothing was wrong with the quality of the drugs, as stated by a specialist doctor who gave evidence in connection with the death of a mother, a Health Ministry spokesman said. According to the spokesman the two drugs, Augmentin and Meropenum provided to the hospital are of high quality and not affected by any quality failures. The Health Ministrys Medical Supplies Division does not supply drugs in their brand names but supply drugs in their generic names. The generic name of the drug is Coamoxiclav and not Augmentin. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena ordered a full investigation into the death of the 27-year mother who died at De Soysa Maternity Hospital, Colombo after a caesarian operation. Emerging drugs presenting new challenges

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

LE MARS, Iowa (KTIV) - Marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines are three drugs you hear quite a bit about, and have for years. But what about plant food, bath salts, herbal incense, and potpourri? Do you know what they are? You should. These are the fastest growing substances being abused. Many of these new drugs are marketed as legal on the internet or even sold over the counter in some states. But they're often abused because people use them differently than how they're labeled and sold. Several newer drugs including synthetic cannabis called K2 are being sold as incense or bath salts. Juvenile Court Officer Andrea Dreckman has been hearing about these drugs for almost two years. "They'll talk about how their friends will pass out and they'll keep watch over them to make sure that their hearts are still beating, you know that they don't need to call the ambulance to come and get them," said Dreckman. Dreckman says she's seen kids, as young as 15, abuse these types of drugs. She says many of them admit the experience was frightening, but doesn't necessarily mean they stopped. "I've had kids use it and tell me that they're never going to … Continue reading

'Drugs' businessman to lose home

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

5 March 2012 Last updated at 06:37 ET A businessman, cleared of three murder charges and drugs dealing, has been ordered to hand his home to the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (Soca). The High Court ruled that Arran Coghlan, 40, from Cheshire, used drug dealing profits to buy his 1m home. "The court ruled Arran Coghlan's family home was funded by criminal activity, now he must hand it over," said Soca. The case was referred by Greater Manchester Police to the former Assets Recovery Agency. A Soca statement said the agency's civil recovery application stated that Mr Coghlan had derived his home through drug trafficking and money laundering over a significant period. Charges were dropped against Mr Coghlan in 2010 when he was accused of shooting dead Stephen Akinyemi in a fight at his home in Alderley Edge in February. Mr Coghlan was cleared in 1996 of shooting Chris Little dead at the wheel of his Mercedes in Marple, Stockport. Seven years later Mr Coghlan stood trial for the murder of drug dealer David Barnshaw, who was kidnapped and forced to drink petrol before being burned alive in the back of a car in Stockport in 2001. He was … Continue reading

Slow, costly process stymies generic biotech drugs

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - One of the pledges of the Obama administration's healthcare overhaul was to enable cheaper copies of expensive biotech drugs, but the savings may not be as deep or come as quickly as hoped. Healthcare companies and industry experts say questions over how the market will work and the specter of patent litigation mean robust competition for generic biotech drugs might wait until the end of the decade. The regulatory requirements - which could force drugmakers to spend more money on testing - could mean eventual cost savings for payers of as little as 10 or 20 percent per treatment. That discount is paltry compared with savings of up to 90 percent for traditional generic medicines sold at U.S. pharmacies once the patents on brand-name pills expire. U.S. health regulators issued their first draft of guidelines governing that process in February. Drugmakers and industry experts say the proposed rules still fall short of providing a clear understanding of the best way to develop this market. "It should be the next bolus of growth for the generic drug industry and we need to fight to get a substitutable, interchangeable biogeneric marketplace," said Heather Bresch, chief executive officer at … Continue reading

Pharmacy Benefit Managers: Too Powerful?

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

Any week now, the Federal Trade Commission is expected to rule on the proposed merger between Medco Health Services and Express Scripts. Pills Trouble is, outside of Wall Street and the drug industry, theres little interest in the deal. Thats because by its very nature, the arcane world of pharmacy benefit managers isnt exactly the thing of dinner table conversation. Yet what they do is. Theyre the middleman between you, your drug store and your insurer. They control the cost of what you pay for drugs and which drug stores you should use. And based on deals they strike with drug companies, they even try to influence what drugs you takein some cases refusing to fill the script recommended by your doctor. "Since when is less competition ever good for all but investors? Id go so far as to say theyre the key player in what some might argue is one-step removed from a legal drug cartel. Few markets are as concentrated, opaque and complex and subject to rampant anticompetitive and deceptive conduct such as the PBM market, is the way industry critic David Balto, a former FTC lawyer, put it in testimony before the Department of Labor in 2010 … Continue reading

Historic Las Vegas Pharmacy Forced to Close

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas pharmacy that has been around for decades is closing its doors. White Cross Drugs on Las Vegas Boulevard can no longer stay in business after it's supplier cut them off from ordering prescription drugs. White Cross has been at the same location for 60 years. It has served locals, tourists, and even the stars performing on the Las Vegas Strip. It was also the first 24-hour pharmacy in the valley. On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the pharmacy will be no longer. For store employees and customers, the sudden news is something of a shock. "It's a family. You come in and they know who you are. It's not a Walgreens, its not a CVS, not a Rite Aid, it's a neighborhood pharmacy," said George Goodman who has been a customer for more than 30 years. He's had knee replacement surgery, throat cancer, and others illnesses. His story is just one of many since the pharmacy opened in 1960. "We use to service Elvis, the Rat Pack, everybody came here, the showgirls," said White Cross Drugs owner Marcie Davis. She has worked at the pharmacy for 21 years. Eight years ago, she bought the pharmacy, … Continue reading

Are Pharmacy Benefit Management Companies Really Evil?

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

By Andrew Dillard - March 5, 2012 | Tickers: CVS, ESRX, MHS | 0 Comments Andrew is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited. This morning I was reading a colorful article by CNBCs Senior Stock Commentator Herb Greenberg about the problems with the pharmacy benefit management industry. In his article Herb egregiously attacks PBMs such as Express Scripts (NASDAQ: ESRX), Medco (NYSE: MHS) and CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS) arguing that PBMs are one step removed from a legal drug cartel and the inner-workings of PBMs and the mechanics of the deals they strike with drug companies are simply too complicated. The primary goal of this article I believe is to protest the pending merger between Express Scripts and Medco, because as Mr. Greenberg puts it, Since when is less competition ever good for all but investors? However, the half-hearted attempt at writing a unbiased article has clouded the point Mr. Greenberg is making and unfairly painted PBMs as an evil industry. Mr. Greenberg could not be farther from the truth, and heres why. In the article, Mr. Greenberg over-simplifies the role that PBMs play … Continue reading

Next-generation DNA sequencing to improve diagnosis for muscular dystrophy

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2012) Scientists at The University of Nottingham have used a revolutionary new DNA-reading technology for a research project that could lead to correct genetic diagnosis for muscle-wasting diseases. The technique could be used to offer people with muscular dystrophy, or a related neuromuscular condition, a more accurate prognosis, which would enable them to make more informed choices on life decisions, including family planning. The researchers used a next-generation DNA sequencing machine to investigate the condition of a patient who had previously been misdiagnosed with the wrong type of muscular dystrophy. The research, led by Professor Jane Hewitt in the Universitys School of Biology, was funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign through a PhD studentship for Andreas Leidenroth. Andreas said: Our case study demonstrates how genetic diagnostics will be done in the future. New DNA sequencing machines will be cheap to run, easy to use, fit on a desk and decode an entire human genome in minutes. High-throughout DNA sequencing in the NHS is no longer a question of if, but of when. The biggest challenge will be to develop standardised filtering guidelines so that we can easily extract medically relevant information from these large DNA datasets. The … Continue reading
