Flu drug may boost recovery from brain injuries

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2012

(CBS/AP) Medicines generally have side effects, but once in awhile the side effects may treat other conditions. Viagra after all, was originally a blood pressure medicine. Amantadine, an old flu medicine approved in the 1960s, was found a few years later to improve symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Now a new study shows the drug may also speed recovery from severe brain injuries. The study, published Mar. 1 in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 184 patients who had severe brain injuries caused by falls and car crashes. About a third were in a vegetative state (unconscious but with periods of wakefulness) and the rest were minimally conscious. The patients were randomly assigned to receive amantadine or a placebo daily for four weeks. They were treated within one to four months after getting injuried - a period when a lot of patients get better on their own, according to study author Joseph Giacino, a neurologist at Boston's Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The researchers found both groups made small but significant improvements, but the rate of recovery was faster in the group getting amantadine. Changes included the ability to give yes-and-no answers, follow commands or use a spoon or hairbrush. Of the … Continue reading

Cholesterol drug side effect warnings possible

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2012

MICHELLE COOKE New Zealand doctors may soon have to warn hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders that their cholesterol-lowering medication increases the risk of diabetes and dementia. More than 400,000 people - one in every 10 New Zealanders - are prescribed either Lipitor or Lipex to lower their cholesterol levels. New research shows that statins have been found to lead to memory loss and increase a person's chance of developing diabetes by nine per cent, sparking the United States to issue a mandatory label on the medicine, warning of its side effects. The announcement by the United States Food and Drug Association (FDA) on Tuesday sparked New Zealand's health regulator Medsafe to conduct a review. A New Zealand study in 2007 made links between memory loss and statins, and information about the side effects are available in datasheets for such medicines, Medsafe's protection and regulation manager Chris James says. But the link between statins and diabetes is not included. The review will decide whether the side effect should be included in datasheets, which doctors use as a reference when alerting patients to potential adverse effects. More than 200,000 Kiwis already have diabetes, which is considered an epidemic in New Zealand. … Continue reading

FDA approves 2 drugs for rare digestive disorders

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it approved two new drugs to aid food digestion in children and adults with rare diseases. The agency approved two pill-based drugs containing the ingredient pancrelipase, which mimics pancreatic enzymes that aid in digestion. Ultresa was approved for adults and children with cystic fibrosis, a deadly inherited disease that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs and other organs. Patients with the disease have difficulty digesting food normally because their pancreas does not make enough digestive enzyme. The FDA also approved a pill called Viokace for adults who cannot digest food normally because of pancreatitis or surgery to remove the organ. Viokace combines the ingredient pancrelipase with a proton pump inhibitor, a drug used to reduce stomach acid. Unapproved pancreatic enzyme products had been available for many years, but the FDA has been requiring companies to seek regulatory approval for the products since April 2010. Both drugs are made by Bridgewater, N.J.-based Aptalis Pharma U.S. Inc. Read more from the original source: FDA approves 2 drugs for rare digestive disorders … Continue reading

350 apply to new Marshall pharmacy school

Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2012

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Nearly 350 students submitted applications to Marshall University's new school of pharmacy by Thursday's deadline, said Dr. Kevin Yingling, dean of the school of pharmacy. "We've extended 35 acceptance announcements so far," said Yingling, who said the majority of applicants hailed from West Virginia, southeastern Ohio and Kentucky. "We are well on our way of interviewing and vetting applicants." Marshall's Board of Governors approved plans for the Huntington-based public school to open a new pharmacy school in December 2009. Pending approval by a national accrediting body, Marshall will join West Virginia University and the University of Charleston as the third pharmacy program in the state. School officials plan to enroll 80 students this year and classes are expected to commence in the fall. Thursday marked the application deadline, but Yingling said he expects a few late submissions in the upcoming days. In early February, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education granted Marshall an on-site evaluation in May for its pharmacy program -- a big step in the school netting national accreditation. The same accrediting council had refused an on-site evaluation in June, but school officials said in October they were fast-tracking improvements to the program to re-apply. … Continue reading

CVS Pharmacy in Chatham, New Jersey. (credit: CBS 2) CHATHAM, N.J. (CBSNewYork) A New Jersey pharmacy is under fire for mixing childrens medication with cancer drugs. The medication mix-up is raising concerns about how people can protect themselves when placing a prescription. Sandy Jones said she couldnt believe there was a major medication mix-up at her longtime CVS pharmacy in Chatham. Im surprised because Ive been coming here for many years, Ive never had an issue. But thats really serious, Jones told CBS 2s Hazel Sanchez on Thursday night. CVS pharmacy said its Chatham location may have given as many as 50 families the breast cancer fighting drug Tamoxifen, instead offluoride tablets, for children over the last 60 days. Im gonna think twice about doing my medications here. Ill tell you that, said customer Mike Riccone. Its pretty awful. To give kids that? Its scary actually. Its really scary, customer Christen Simmons said. CVS apologized for the mistake in a written statement and said: most of the families we have spoken to did not indicate that their children received any incorrect pills. We will continue to follow up with families who believe that their children may have ingested incorrect medication. … Continue reading
