MANY Filipinos are suffering from erectile dysfunction or ED, according to a health expert.

Dr. Jaime Songco, president of the Philippine Urologic Oncologist, said that stress and an unhealthy lifestyle are some of the reasons for this condition.

Many Filipino men are now open to talk about their situation. However, there are those who are still shy who dont want to talk about this health condition, Songco said.

Citing the Ideal Sex survey conducted in 2011 by Harris Interactive Asia, a full service global market research firm, Songco said that eight in 10 Filipino men and three quarters of women ranked erection hardness (EHS) or the ability to maintain an erection as either the most or the second most important element necessary for achieving an ideal sexual experience.

He said that women in particular attributed a strong connection between erection hardness score and all aspects of sexual performance. The study found that women whose had an EHS grade of four are significantly more satisfied than women whose partners had only a grade of three.

Songco said that the EHS grades are based on the scale developed by the European Association of Urology, which measures erection hardness and quality on a scale of one to four. A grade of one depicts a penis that is larger, but not hard, grade two is for a penis that is hard but not hard enough for penetration, grade three is a penis that is hard enough for penetration but not completely hard, while grade four is given for a penis that is completely hard and fully rigid.

With erectile dysfunction, attaining that ideal hardness score is deemed impossible for some men.

Talk about it This growing concern should prompt Filipino men to stand up and discuss their problem, according to Dr. Ma Gia Sison, consultant of the World Health Organization-Western Pacific Region.

Sison urged men to talk about their fears during the Up4Love health campaign launched by Pfizer Philippines.
