UMD announces new artificial intelligence institute – The Diamondback

The University of Maryland is launching a new institute dedicated to artificial intelligence, a campuswide email Tuesday from university president Darryll Pines said.

The Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland will help educate students on AI and prepare them for an AI-infused world, the email said. The institutes creation comes after meetings of a multidisciplinary workgroup and collaboration with the deans of each college and school at this university, the email added.

Hal Daum, a computer science professor at this university, will lead the institute, the email said.

The institute will take advantage of UMDs breadth of expertise and enhance connections between AI leaders in fields of study across campus, from computer science and engineering to information studies, journalism, education and the arts, Pines wrote in the email.

In a video on the upcoming institute also released Tuesday morning, Pines said it will offer hands-on experience and coursework.

Education and research at the institute will focus on ethical, responsible and trustworthy AI, according to the email.

In the wake of both President Bidens and Maryland Governor Moores calls to catalyze responsible use and mitigate the risks of AI, we are ready to meet the moment, Pines said in the email. We have an opportunity to shape AI research and education in ways that advance the public good.
