New Substance Abuse Prevention Campaign Focuses on Alcoholism

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

Gateway Foundation Drug Treatment Supports Alcohol Awareness Month in April CHICAGO, March 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More individuals than the entire population of Illinois, or 14 million American adults, meet the criteria for alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Furthermore, nine out of 10 individuals with alcoholism won't seek the treatment they need for substance abuse. To address this public health concern, Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment is joining the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence to raise awareness of alcohol-related issues during Alcohol Awareness Month in April. In an effort to change behaviors and attitudes towards alcohol abuse, Gateway Foundation is launching a campaign that heightens awareness of low-risk drinking guidelines in comparison to risky or binge drinking that could lead to alcoholism. "In honor of Alcohol Awareness Month, we are reaching out to communities throughout Illinois with substance abuse awareness resources, like magnets, window clings and educational materials. Our goal is for adults to understand what constitutes as risky drinking and if needed, that professional help is available," says Gateway Foundation President and CEO Michael Darcy. "We encourage local businesses, schools, public sector organizations and healthcare providers … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2013

Colleyville, TX (PRWEB) March 19, 2013 Tracy Crain, of Tracy Crain Counseling and Therapy, said designer drug use is on the rise worldwide. Citing a January 2013 report issued by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), Crain said, Mephodrone, which is similar to cocaine and ecstasy, is now showing up as the current designer drug-of-choice in Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia. Crain says that while the drug is most likely manufactured in China, it is also becoming much more available here in the United States via the internet. The short-term affects are similar to those of cocaine, Crain said. Those include: restlessness, anxiety, heart irregularities, nausea, vomiting and paranoia. Long term affects, she said, include addiction, depression, and possible long-term memory damage. Mephodrone is just one of many designer drugs showing up on the world market. Per the ICBN report, Japan has recently added 51 drugs to its controlled substance list, and Europe has added 15. The ICBN is a world-wide narcotic drug watchdog that advises the United Nations. Regardless of the substance abused, Crain says the approach to change this condition includes treating the afflicted as well as the codependentthat person or persons in the addicts life who picks … Continue reading

Docs' licenses under fire after deaths

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

BURLINGTON, Ind. (WLFI) - Four doctors from one family practice are being linked to nearly a dozen patient deaths, some of which date back to 2008. The investigation began in February when the Drug Enforcement Agency raided the Burlington location on a search warrant. The doors to the clinic remain open as of Tuesday, but the attorney general now wants four of the physicians' licenses suspended. A sign that reads Now Accepting New Patients sits outside the Wagoner Medical Center on East Seventh Street in Burlington, despite four physicians being accused of using dangerous prescribing practices and unsafe drug mixes. "I don't know everything that is going on here but I can say that I am happy here and I hope I can still come here because they are my medical family," said one Wagoner Medical Center patient. On Monday, the Indiana Attorney General's office filed an emergency license suspension against four of the center's physicians. Named in the 10-page petition is Dr. Don Wagoner, his wife, Dr. Marilyn Wagoner, Dr. Robert Brewer and Dr. William Terpstra. WLFI-News 18 stopped at both offices Tuesday morning one in Burlington, the other in Kokomo. We were declined a comment and asked to … Continue reading

Delray Recovery Center is a Florida treatment facility that offers individualized programs for treatment of addictions to alcohol and drugs, eating disorders and other mental health issues. Recognizing that people may suffer from a combination of mental health issues and alcohol or drug dependency, Delray Recovery Center is now offering a new dual-diagnosis treatment for addiction. Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) March 18, 2013 Delray Recovery Center has an experienced and compassionate staff of professional addiction specialists and psychologists that can provide assessments and work together to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan tailored to meet the persons specific needs. Many recovery centers offer treatment plans that focus on addiction recovery, but not every center can also address a persons mental health issues that may be part of the problem, said Delray Recovery Center Chief Operations Officer Doug Petri. At Delray Recovery Center, we can now do both with our dual-diagnosis treatment plan. While it is often unclear if a mental health issue leads to substance abuse or the substance abuse leads to mental health issue, the plan of action Delray Recovery Center offers for co-occurring disorders is very clear. A wave of drug abuse has rocked Wall Street hard and its pushing record numbers of strung-out bankers, traders and other hotshot financial workers to seek treatment, a Post investigation reveals. The Streets raging drug-dependency explosion may be out of control, medical experts say, as the once-Masters of the Universe struggle with reduced pay and staff. Where once cocaine was the drug of choice for money managers, financial-service employees are now behind the surge in opioid painkiller use such as: Vicodin-, Oxycontin- and Percocet-linked visits to New York City emergency departments, a recent city health report says. As a result of that report, Mayor Bloomberg announced new emergency-room guidelines to prevent opioid prescription painkiller abuse. Prescription painkillers can provide life-changing relief for people in dire health situations, but they can be extremely dangerous if used or prescribed improperly, the mayor said. The most recent data show that visits to New York City emergency rooms for opioid painkiller-linked conditions has risen to 143 patients out of every 100,000 almost tripling in the last six years. In a groundbreaking study, University of Pennsylvania professor, Alexandra Michel, takes a chilling look at the dark side of life for a modern financier: Six out … Continue reading

Drug overdose deaths in McHenry County during the past four years peaked in 2009, when there were 38 total, 15 of which involved heroin. Last year, 16 of the 31 overdose deaths involved heroin. Nationally, drug overdose deaths increased for the 11th consecutive year in 2010, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 38,329 deaths in 2010, up from 37,004 in 2009. The majority of those deaths involved addictive painkillers such as oxycodone and hydrocodone.
