Posted on May 30, 2013 By REPORTER NAME Yakima Herald-Republic Kittitas Countys drug court program is marking its 10th birthday, and has graduated 71 offenders since it was first organized in 2003. Emily Brown, drug court coordinator, said 18 people are currently enrolled, and there are about 28 to 22 in drug court at a given time. Brown, along with Kittitas County Deputy Prosecutor Candace Hooper, are the two remaining members of the group that organized the drug court program. The court or defense attorneys refer chemically dependent offenders involved in some kinds of non-violent crimes for enrollment in the program. We want them to get sober, thats what its about, Brown said. The combination of court staff and volunteers from the prosecutors office, the state Department of Corrections, law enforcement and treatment specialists all work together to provide support and show offenders how their substance abuse problems affect their families and community. But ultimately, theyre doing it for themselves, she said. How it works Here is the original post: Kittitas drug court turns 10 … Continue reading

However, by thoroughly analyzing 15 long-term studies which tracked drug abuse among a total of 2,565 children diagnosed with ADHD between 1980 and 2012, the authors were able to come to a more concrete conclusion as to its effects on drug/substance abuse. The results were somewhat surprising. Two of the studies revealed that children on stimulant medication were at a lower the risk of alcohol abuse, while another said they were at a higher risk. Study author Kathryn Humphreys, a doctoral student in psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, said … Continue reading

Addiction and Drug Abuse: Study Drug Adderall Abuse Spikes During Finals

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) May 25, 2013 For college students, few events can be more stressful than finals week. Increasingly, they are turning to prescription stimulants like Adderall to help them stay awake and study. For more on this, go to http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130501145151.htm. Recovery Associates, a drug treatment facility, warns that students who pick up Adderall, just to help them through finals are at risk for developing a physical and psychological dependency. While initially they may use it for finals, depending on underlying factors like genetics, social factors and self-esteem, they may not stop using it once finals are over. A counselor at Recovery Associates also cautions against mixing Adderall and alcohol. Because Adderall is a stimulant, people who drink while using it often drink more. Whereas you would normally pass out once you reached your limit, Adderall keeps you up, increasing the risk for alcohol poisoning. Recovery Associates is a drug and alcohol treatment center that provides a variety of programs and services for men, women and teens struggling with chemical dependency issues. At the core of their philosophy is the belief that addiction is a treatable illness. Their Adderall addiction treatment experience has shown that anyone is capable of achieving … Continue reading
