Maine deals with opiate dependency problem

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2013

INDIAN ISLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- On Tuesday, Judith Josiah-Martin, Director of Multicultural Student life at the University of Maine, spoke to community members about the legacy of addiction, and the myths behind it. "We tend to think they're bad people, they're crazy people, they're just drug-seeking, abusing people that we are wasting our resources on," said Josiah-Martin. But Josiah-Martin says this is an illness, just like any other illness, and it needs to be treated. "It's something that disturbs, changes and alters how people function, how people think how people behave," said Josiah-Martin. Another myth behind addiction is that there's no life after recovery, which Josiah-Martin says is not true. She says that misconception arises because addicts stay anonymous through recovery, and the public only hears about them if they get arrested. "We don't tend to hear anything about people in recovery, the people who have gone on who have five, 10, 15, 20 years of recovery who are living productive lives, who run companies, who teach, who have gone on to full careers or have beautiful families," said Josiah-Martin. An example is Marissa Mitchell, whospoke publicly about her addiction for the first time. She said bullying is what … Continue reading

By Jessica Beresford Published: 3:32PM Thursday May 23, 2013 Source: ONE News Source: ONE News More help needs to be given to the 25,000 people in New Zealand who are still long-term P users, the Drug Foundation says. The latest Government report into tackling methamphetamine use in New Zealand was released today, which Prime Minister John Key said showed positive results. "When the Government began this plan in 2009, New Zealand had one of the highest prevalence rates of P use in the world, with 2.1% of the population using the drug," said Key. "The latest data shows this rate has more than halved to 0.9%. While this is positive, the reality is there are still around 25,000 longer-term, heavy users of the drug, who are locked in a cycle of dependence, causing misery and angst for them, their families and loved ones." NZ Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell said that while the progress was a significant improvement, the focus now needed to be on ensuring the large group still using the drug received treatment. "What the last three years has shown us is that investing in addiction treatment and trying to sign post these people to get help … Continue reading

Drug program operator plans improvements; CCCS offers diverse services, classes

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2013

The local nonprofit taking over Butte-Silver Bows Chemical Dependency Center is ready to hit the ground running and eventually expand and improve programs for people struggling with addiction, its chief executive said. Mike Thatcher, of Community, Counseling and Correctional Services, said hes been asked why any organization would want to take on the financially troubled program, but he said its too important a service for Butte to lose. It is unknown of how much CCCS will be paid by Butte-Silver Bow because funding is based on the number of clients and services provided. Thatcher said the organization bid on the contract because nobody should be denied the ability to access services. Thatcher plans on Friday to ask for letters of interest from current employees to see if theyd like to continue working in the center once CCCS officially takes over on July 1. CCCS will begin the transition process in June. CCCS employees would start in July, he said. Butte-Silver Bow is transferring the program to the private CCCS after the program mounted more than $1 million in losses since 2005. The city-county is the last in the state to provide addictions services through its health department. Chief Executive Matt … Continue reading

Tennessee- Medical professionals are concerned about the rise in the number of infants born addicted to prescription drugs in the U.S. Known medically asneonatal abstinence syndrome, babies born with a drug dependency will require small doses of an opiate, such as morphine, until they can be weaned off and their withdrawal symptoms are brought under control. According to an Associated Press report, staff at the East Tennessee Childrens Hospital in Knoxville expect to treat 320 children this year for drug dependence, up from 283 the year prior and 33 in 2008. According to the report, the East Tennessee Childrens Hospital neonatal units dedicates approximately half of its beds to newborns being treated for drug addiction. The agitation caused by withdrawal have led medical staff to place mittens on the infants hands to prevent them from scratching and rubbing their own faces. A similar report by the Wall Street Journal in 2012, which focused on Florida hospitals, describes medical professionals slowly coming to grips with an increase in drug dependent newborns.
