The following are obituaries and death notices that appeared in the January 30, 2013 edition of the Star Valley Independent. For more historical obituary listing, click here to visit the Star Valley Historical Society website. Dewaine Jensen, 91, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. He was born in Smoot on Nov. 8, 1921, the third of 12 children. He attended school there until the eighth grade when he quit to help support the family. He was drafted in the Army at 18 and served in North Africa, France, Italy and Germany. Dewaine married Jean Pringle in Evanston on Nov. 8, 1945. They recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. He worked four years for Reuben Johnson on his sheep farm in Smoot and also worked as a farmer with sheep and cattle until getting a job at FMC in 1952. He retired from there in 1983. Dewaine was a member of the Pocatello Mens Bowling League and also bowled for FMC for 30 years. He belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jean and Dewaine were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDSTemple in 1948. Dewaine enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, horse shoe tournaments at the Jensen family reuinions, … Continue reading →

Hailey Greenwood capped off a spectacular weekend with 24 points as the ladies won their first state title since the 1999-2000 season. Lexi Erickson flirted with a triple-double, scoring 13 points, pulling down 12 rebounds and finishing with seven assists. Jessica Woodford had nine points and Cortland Jenkins hauled in eight rebounds. Shay Schwab had seven points and helped control the paint against a stronger Douglas team. Ive got perma-grin said head coach Rob Erickson. These gals have worked so hard and done everything weve asked them to do and they came in here believing that they could do this and they did. Douglas had enacted the 40-point mercy rule 16 times over the course of the season, but were never able to stop a quicker and deeper Lady Braves squad. Three Bearcats fouled out by the time the final buzzer sounded. The girls program had to settle for three state runner-up titles in the past decade, often running into Douglas in the process. Kohl Battleson made his only basket of the game as time expired in the Wyoming 3A boys state championship game against Powell, giving Star Valley a 41-39 victory and the schools first state championship since defeating Mountain View in 2007. As the lane opened up as he drove to the rim and kissed it off the glass with under a second remaining. When asked if he had ever seen such an ending in his 33-year coaching career, head coach Tony Saras said: Never. Ive had a few like that in a regular game, but never in a state championship game. I mean, championship games rarely finish on a last-second shot, so we couldnt have scripted this any better. Kohl has come up big for us all year. Battleson had been forced to settle for state runner-up last year at the state championship against Torrington, and then to the Panthers during the football season. By Dan Dockstader on Mar 8, 2013 in News Two elk harvested by hunters in the Big Horn Mountains of northern Wyoming have tested positive for brucellosis, according to a report released by the Wyoming Livestock Board on Friday, March 8. The report noted, Brucellosis has been present for nearly a century in elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area, including the northwest corner of Wyoming. Brucellosis in cattle, elk, and bison is caused by a bacterium, Brucella abortus. The disease can cause an animal to abort its fetus. The positive elk were identified through the Wyoming Game and Fish Departments statewide brucellosis surveillance program, in which hunters voluntarily submit blood samples from harvested elk. Samples are collected from hunters in the fall and early winter, then analyzed at the WGFD lab throughout the winter. The Wyoming Livestock Board, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and the State Veterinarian are collaborating to assess the situation and identify appropriate action. Its important for people to understand that brucellosis has not been found in any livestock in this area of Wyoming, said Wyoming State Veterinarian Jim Logan. The Star Valley Lady Braves and the Star Valley Braves basketball teams will be playing in the championship games of the Wyoming Class 3A State Tournament in Casper on Saturday, March 9. The Lady Braves worked their way to the final game by defeating Buffalo 64-32 on Thursday, March 7, and beating Rawlins 54-30 on Friday, March 8. The Braves battled their way into the final game by defeating Wheatland 56-31 on Thursday, March 7 and Lander Valley 38-25 on Friday, March 8. The Braves will play in the championship game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. They will face the winner of the Cody-Powell game. The Lady Braves will play Douglas for the championship at approximately 6:30 p.m. Lady Braves: 54 Lady Outlaws: 30 A very aggressive Star Valley team jumped out to an 11-point lead in a revenge rematch from last years 3A semi-finals. However, the aggression came with a price as the Lady Braves saw Jessica Woodford and Lexi Erickson head to the bench with foul trouble. By Dahl Erickson on Mar 7, 2013 in News, Sports After an ugly start that saw Star Valley trailing Wheatland 8-0 with nearly six minutes elapsed, the Braves offense came alive and finished the first half on a 23-8 run to lead by seven at the intermission in a 56-31 win. We were thinking it was a little bit like that Powell gamer there in that first quarter, said head coach Tony Saras, referring to Star Valleys 37-point output in last weeks regional championship. Lets not even talk about that quarter like it happened. After that, Im pretty happy with how we played. We played tough defense and were able to knock down some shots. The Braves defense, even during their scoreless portion of the game, was still solid, allowing just ten points to Wheatland in the first period. The Bulldogs only scored 21 in the remaining three quarters as the crimson & gold forced 20 turnovers and saw 11 different players get into the scoring column. Dalton Passey hit the floor hard on more than one occasion and had a huge offensive rebound and a putback just before the second period expired. Our backcourt defense was phenomenal this morning, said head coach Rob Erickson. We were able to turn them over and convert for some easy baskets and I was pleased with how well we looked for each other; made the extra pass and got layups out of it. It was the second early morning blowout win in the past seven days for the Lady Braves who beat Mountain View 64-24 last week. Im starting to like these morning games, Erickson smiled. With Buffalo threatening to draw to within single digits early in the second period, Nicoll ripped down an offensive rebound out of the hands of a Bison opponent and put it up and in for two points. She then immediately stole the inbound pass and deftly passed it to Greenwood for another layup. Greenwood, known as Bruce to the Star Valley faithful then stole the ball and collected another layup. By Sarah Hale on Mar 5, 2013 in Lincoln County, News Lincoln County has been installing a new phone system. The new system is set to be up and running this week, Commissioner Kent Connelly said. Our old system was a Cisco System that was more than six years old, Connelly said. It is outdated and the company wont service it anymore and it failed. According to Connelly, the county made the decision to move forward with a Mitel System. Silver Star Communications is the contractor, Connelly said. Our last phone system cost the county over $350,000, Connelly said. This new system is half of that price and is run through the computer. So its better technology and costs the county a lot less. The new Mitel System has a price tag of $105,933.90. It will be installed in all county offices, Connelly said. This is a county-wide system. People in our offices across the county can talk to each other face to face because the computer is the phone, said Connelly. By Sarah Hale on Feb 26, 2013 in Lincoln County, News Construction of the Lincoln County Justice Center continues to move forward. The $17 million project is set to be completed in 2013. Despite the cold and snow the project has made significant headway, said Griffin Johnson, project principal. As of the end of January the project is 35 percent finished. The skeleton of the building is nearly complete. Portions of the building are getting close to being closed in, meaning heat can then be introduced. Thats a good thing this time of year. According to Griffin, several benchmarks on the project have been achieved thus far. They include: completing the rough grading; creating a new site access from Highway 30A; installing footings and foundation; the erection of the precast panels; and completing underground rough- ins for plumbing and electrical. Other progress on the project includes steel erection, roof deck and membrane installation, rooftop mechanical-unit and skylight installation, and the erection of block walls, Griffin said. Overall, pending the actual duration of winter, the project is on track to be completed before the end of 2013. When the project is finished, the structure will be approximately 50,000 square feet. The Lincoln County School District Number Two Board of Trustees is considering pros and cons of adopting an electronic curriculum at the high school level. Shannon Harris, district curriculum director, presented information about switching over to electronic curriculum during the Feb. 14 meeting of the school board. According to Harris, there are three critical concerns with moving forward with an electronic curriculum at the secondary level. This first one is bandwidth, she said. We do not currently have the bandwidth to move forward with this kind of curriculum. Until we get that resolved, we cannot move forward. According to Harris, the state is moving forward with some solutions to the bandwidth dilemma. If the state fails to get the necessary bandwidth in place, the school district is ready and willing to move forward with expanding bandwidth, she said. Initiative fatigue among staff members was listed as the second critical concern. We expect a lot from our teachers and school staff, said Harris. This curriculum change will raise that expectation further. In surveying classroom teachers at the high school level, 39.1 percent said they are using web based curriculum or electronic media in the classroom daily.
