Bangladesh on Wednesday confirmed its first Covid-19 death as the number of confirmed coronavirus patients rose to 14.

It is a sad day for us that the first Covid-19 patient died in our country today, said Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research director Meerjady Sabrina Flora at a press conference.

The 70-year-old male patient, who was also suffering from pulmonary disease, diabetes, and hypertension, was identified with Covid-19 on Tuesday and died Wednesday while undergoing treatment at intensive care unit at a hospital, she said.

The man was in contact with a person having travel history abroad, she added.

Four more Covid-19 patients were also identified on Wednesday, Meerjady said, adding three of them were male patients who recently returned from Italy and Kuwait another was female family member of another Covid-19 patient identified earlier.

They have been tested positive while in quarantine, she said.

Bangladesh on March 8 confirmed its first infections of three people with Covid-19 and with the new four cases, the coronavirus patients rose to 14.

So far three Covid-19 patients were released after their recovery and now 10 were in hospitals. Among them, four were in critical condition as they have comorbidity like diabetes, hypertension and history of stroke, Meerjady said.

On Wednesday, 16 other suspected patients were in isolation and 42 others in institutional quarantine, she said.
