New Delhi: Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common heart condition, and increases the risk of heart diseases like heart attacks, strokes, failure, etc. Heart diseases are a common cause of death, all around the world. As medical science and experts try to find the root causes behind high incidences of hypertension, it is important to understand that the diet we consume, and the lifestyle we follow has a direct link with the heart, and can lead to high blood pressure.
If you suffer from high blood pressure or are at high risk, you must manage your diet accordingly. Here are a few foods that should be off the table, literally, if you want to keep hypertension at bay.
Everyone who has a heart problem knows that salty food can increase their problem of hypertension. You must consume salt in moderation. You should steer clear of food that contains excess salt like salty chips, snacks, etc.
Processed foods are bad for health anyway, and their regular intake is not recommended irrespective of hypertension. However, for people with high blood pressure, or for those with a higher risk, processed foods can prove to be even more harmful. Processed foods contain oil, preservatives, and excess salt, which can have an adverse effect on hypertension. Salt is often used as a preservative for processed foods as well.

People with heart health issues should also avoid the use of excess sugar. Eating chocolates, sweets, or using crystalised sugar can lead to obesity and weight gain, which contributes to hypertension. Eating sugar does not directly cause diabetes, but it can lead to obesity, which is a major risk factor for the condition.
