Author: Dr Amy Stanway, Department of Dermatology, Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand, February 2004. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, itchy skin condition that is very common in children but may occur at any age. It is also known as eczema and atopic eczema, and was formerly known as Besnier prurigo. It is the most common form of dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis usually occurs in people who have an 'atopic tendency'. This means they may develop any or all of three closely linked conditions; atopic dermatitis, asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Often these conditions run within families with a parent, child or sibling also affected. A family history of asthma, eczema or hay fever is particularly useful in diagnosing atopic dermatitis in infants. Atopic dermatitis arises because of a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. These include defects in skin barrier function making the skin more susceptible to irritation by soap and other contact irritants, the weather, temperature and non-specific triggers: see Causes of atopic dermatitis. There is quite a variation in the appearance of atopic dermatitis between individuals. From time to time, most people have acute flares with inflamed, red, sometimes blistered and weepy patches. In between flares, the … Continue reading

Brain Injury Treatment – Brain and Spinal Cord

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2018

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when any sudden trauma damages the brain. This damage can be localized, affecting only one part of the brain or it can be diffuse, affecting two or more parts of the brain. Traumatic brain injury ranges from mild to severe. Both a closed head injury and a penetrating head injury can cause TBI. A closed head injury means that something violently hits the head or the head violently hits something, but the object does not enter the skull. When an object does pierce the skull and enter the brain tissue, the resulting injury is called a penetrating injury. Both forms of injury can be severe. When an obvious injury occurs to the head, the patient may be unconscious and in need of immediate medical care. If you have experienced trauma to the head, emergency medical workers will focus on your immediate needs. They will try to stabilize you, making sure that you are breathing and that your heart rate and blood pressure are under control. The great concern is that your brain is receiving adequate oxygen. Your airway may need to be opened. Sometimes CPR is necessary to make sure your heart is pumping enough … Continue reading

TBI Treatment – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Traumatic …

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2018

TBI Treatment Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury Conditions that harm the brain have a wide reach. Whether from a stroke (vascular accident) or a traumatic brain injury, the results impair the whole family. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is not a cure . . . . but it can often help. Following is a MUST SEE video from theMontel Williams Show. Even though science now knows better, the old-school idea still often remains: that once an area of the brain has been damaged by a stroke, TBI (traumatic brain injury), or near drowning, that nothing or very little can be done to restore the function of that area. Recent scientific research has demonstrated that while the core-area of the damaged brain tissue may be irreversibly damaged, there is an area surrounding this tissue that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can restore and these neurons (brain/nerve cells) can re-establish their function. The majority of tia, stroke and brain injuries are caused by blood vessel obstructions, such as a blood clot, that cuts off blood flow and oxygen to parts of the brain. This results in the death of nerve cells within a very short time. These dying brain cells begin to swell due … Continue reading
