Eczema is a skin condition is characterized by itchy, red rashes that appear on the skin. It is said to be a group of unrelated diseases that have a similar appearance. There are many factors that trigger eczema although the exact cause still remains unknown. There are many kinds of Eczema; Hand Eczema, Contact Dermatitis (caused by skin reaction when in contact with certain substances), Dyshidrotic Eczema (the blistering type of eczema limited to the fingers, palms and soles of the feet), Nummular Eczema, Statis Dermatitis and Atopic Dermatitis (most severe and chronic type of eczema). Many doctors think that eczema causes are linked to allergic diseases while others think that eczema may be genetic. Allergens are environmental factors that trigger the development of Eczema if a person with genes that are most likely to develop eczema is exposed to it. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, itchy skin condition that is very common in children but may occur at any age. It is also known as eczema and atopic eczema, and was formerly known as Besnier prurigo. It is the most common form of dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis usually occurs in people who have an 'atopic tendency'. This means they may develop any or all of three closely linked conditions; atopic dermatitis, asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Often these conditions run within families with a parent, child or sibling also affected. A family history of asthma, eczema or hay fever is particularly useful in diagnosing atopic dermatitis in infants. Atopic dermatitis arises because of a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. The appearance of eczema can vary from mild forms, when skin looks dry and flaky, to severe forms, when skin can be extremely irritated and red. The most severe forms of eczema can make your skin crack and ooze. Even if your skin does not look dry, flaky, or red, it needs consistent care and protection. Its important to remember that eczema happens in cycles at times, your skin may feel okay. Other times, it will feel itchy, and scratching leads to red, rashy, and/or leathery skin.
