But according to the episode 16 synopsis, things are only going to get more intense for the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial hospital -- specifically for April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams.) In episode 11, the couple was forced to say goodbye to their newborn child, Samuel, who was diagnosed with Type II of osteogenesis imperfecta, a brittle bones disease. The parents held their baby for 43 minutes before little Samuel succumbed to the illness in one of the most heartbreaking deaths weve seen on the ABC series. The summary for the next installment suggests April and Jackson will struggle to return to their normal lives following the devastating loss. Student Advocacy Group Vox Launches Sexual Health, Consent Campaign

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

By YUN SOO KIM Student advocacy group Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood launched the Know Your Body campaign this week to reduce the stigma surrounding issues of reproductive anatomy, sexual health. Co-sponsored by the Cornell Womens Resource Center, the campaign aims to encourage Cornellians to have conversations about sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, sexual pleasure and consent, according to Vox President Cassidy Clark 17. Why is it that as soon as the words vagina, gynecologist or birth control are mentioned, voices immediately become hushed and people look around to make sure no one heard them say such a thing? -Lauren Cooley 17 There is no good reason for students to feel uncomfortable discussing these issues, said Lauren Cooley 17, vice president of Vox. Why is it that as soon as the words vagina, gynecologist or birth control are mentioned, voices immediately become hushed and people look around to make sure no one heard them say such a thing? asked Lauren Cooley 17. The taboo nature of these topics is absolutely unnecessary. Additionally, the stigma surrounding these issues can prevent students from being informed, according to Clark. Our society often makes it very difficult for us to be informed about topics … Continue reading

With 'bionic eye' booming, Second Sight is on analysts' radar

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

Second Sight Medical Products Inc. designs, makes and sells the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, which gives sight to the blind. And sales of the "bionic eye" are on the rise. Argus II is a prosthetic retina for people with a disease called retinitis pigmentosa. The device looks like futuristic sunglasses paired with a small box, which contains the brains of the device a video processing unit. A miniature video camera captures an image and then transmits that image to the video processing unit, which then sends it to electrodes implanted in a patient's retina using a surgical procedure. Argus II does not restore normal vision. But it does allow the wearer to see light and shapes, sometimes for the first time in decades. More than 100 patients have received the Argus II, with 15 systems implanted during the last three months of 2014, the most of any quarter. The earliest recipients have had the implants for nearly eight years. Second Sight has received regulatory approvals to offer the device in the U.S., Canada and the European Union. Patients have received the device in the U.S. and 10 other countries. Company executives think the device has a potential market of … Continue reading

Student plans special concert to raise awareness of eye disease

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

MISSOULA, Mont. - A Hellgate High School senior is organizing a concert to raise awareness of a disease that robs some people of their vision. Emily Graham is putting on the Concert in the Dark to raise awareness of retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease she was diagnosed with. To help put the spotlight on this disease there will be periods of blind awareness -- moments the lights are off -- and moments the audience can put on blindfolds. Graham is asking for donations to raise funds for medical studies. "I have been very lucky so far with my RP, but most people end up not so lucky. There's always research going on that needs funding, so that's why I decided to keep going with this project." The concert will be held this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Dennison Theater. Memory of Margot Martini marked by search for blood stem cell donors

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

THE memory of tragic toddler Margot Martini will be honoured by county council staff to help others looking for blood stem cell donors. Worcestershire County Council will be teaming up with Delete Blood Cancer UK to hold a special registration event for staff on Wednesday, March 24 to find potential blood stem cell donors. The day will be in honour of Margot Martini who was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of dual lineage leukaemia aged 14 months in October 2013. A bone marrow transplant from an anonymous person in February 2014, who had registered as a blood stem cell donor, provided Margot a chance of beating her blood cancer, and gave her extra time with her family and loved ones. Sadly, Margot lost her battle in October 2014. Following Margot's diagnosis, her family and friends set up Team Margot to raise awareness of Margot's plight and that of others needing a stem cell donor. Marcus Hart, cabinet member for Health and Well Being said: "It is extremely sad Margot Martini lost her life so young. "The donors kind, benevolent act provided her best chance for beating blood cancer and gave her precious time with her family. "Someone is diagnosed … Continue reading
