Focus on preventing genetic diseases

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2014

Although drugs are being developed to try and control genetic diseases, more focus should be on prevention, experts say. Since diseases like muscular dystrophy and Huntingtons Disease are passed down through generations, it is possible to prevent their spread, according to S.H. Subramony, professor of neurology and paediatrics at the McKnight Brain Institute at University of Florida. He was delivering the Neurokrish Lecture during the fourth anniversary celebrations of TRIMED, a Chennai-based healthcare start-up focussed on chronic diseases, on Saturday. Most people may not develop a genetic disease till they are 40 or 50, by which time they would have already had children. Instead, if people who have a history of genetic diseases in their family are tested, they can make an informed choice of whether to have children or not, says Dr. Subramony. Ennapadam S. Krishnamoorthy, founder and director of TRIMED, says they are working towards integrating modern medicine with traditional systems like Ayurveda and yoga. We are looking at tying up with doctors and working together to provide overall treatment, he says. An exhibition of work by and of people with disabilities was launched on the occasion. The exhibition will be on at the four TRIMED centres in … Continue reading

Genetic Mutations Linked to Specific Autism Symptoms

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2014

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 27, 2014 Researchers have found that the wide variety of symptoms found in people with autism can be traced back to certain genetic mutations, with the more damaging mutations leading to worse disease outcomes. Their findings are published in the journal Nature Neuroscience. The study, conducted by Columbia University Medical Center, involved a large-scale analysis of hundreds of patients and nearly 1000 genes. Researchers have identified hundreds of genes that, when mutated, raise the risk of a person developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and these mutations can lead to a variety of symptoms. If we can understand how different mutations lead to different features of ASD, we may be able to use patients genetic profiles to develop accurate diagnostic and prognostic tools and perhaps personalize treatment, said senior author Dennis Vitkup, Ph.D., associate professor of systems biology and biomedical informatics at Columbia Universitys College of Physicians & Surgeons. To explore the connection between genetic mutations and autism traits, the researchers analyzed genetic and clinical data on hundreds of patients with ASD from the Simons Simplex Collection. They discovered that the more damaging genetic mutations usually lead … Continue reading

'Dad deserved care from properly trained nursing home staff'

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2014

Even without obvious signs of ill health and medical emergencies being overlooked, the treatment Mr Hubbard received left much to be desired. Staff appeared to have little time to devote to him and he frequently received his medicines late. For sufferers of Parkinsons Disease like Mr Hubbard this can leave them feeling, according to experts, as if they are trapped inside their own bodies and can lead to irreparable damage. Miss Hubbard, 50, who works with the charity Parkinsons UK to raise awareness of the condition, added: Weve got an ageing population and we shouldnt be treating our elderly people like this. The average time people spend in a nursing home is just six months before they die and you have to ask why they seem to decline so quickly? Mr Hubbard entered the home in June 2012, after his condition began to worsen. He had previously been looked after four times a day by carers at the house he shared with his elderly wife in Sunderland, though even at this stage Miss Hubbard had her concerns. George Hubbard (far left) who died while suffering from Parkinson's She said: Me and my brother would go around there to see him … Continue reading

Lewiston-Porter Middle School student gives a gift to Niagara Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2014

LEWISTON Charles Dieteman, Charlie, to his teachers and classmates, is a sixth-grade student at Lewiston-Porter Middle School who was born with cerebral palsy, a chronic condition affecting areas of the brain that control movement and muscle coordination. But his mother, Tara McLellan, said her son is not slowed down one bit. Charles rallied his school to raise funds for World Cerebral Palsy Day on Oct. 1, collecting and then donating more than $600 to Niagara Cerebral Palsy. The nonprofit corporation offers 24-hour intermediate care, in-home respite, service coordination, independent living apartments, day treatment, clinical therapy, supported employment, and preschool and early childhood education. McLellan said Charles has a mild form of cerebral palsy, but he struggles. Less than 7 percent of people with cerebral palsy have more than one type, but he has three, she said. But cerebral palsy is not what defines the young boy, said Joy Khatib, a teacher at the Multi-Age Intermediate Education Center. He is widely known throughout the school for his contagious smile, kind personality and compassion towards others, said Khatib, who said Charlie always sees the positive side to any situation. McLellan mentioned the significance of Oct. 1 to Tina Oddy, one of Charles … Continue reading

Fears for drug rehab funding as ACT users shift to ice

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2014

The head of the ACT's peak drug support advocacy body has warned the waiting lists for drug treatment would blow out and users be placed at risk if feared federal government cuts to treatment providers were realised. Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Association ACT executive officer Carrie Fowlie said agrowth in ACT users of ice, reflecting a national trend as a higher purity of drug was available, meant treatment services were already stretched. "When we have people experiencing really serious harm because of the purity, then we have these two month waiting lists for treatment the harms will be exacerbated." "It would be catastrophic for the sector to lose federal drug funding." Advertisement Ms Fowlie said treatment services saved lives, with alcohol still the drug causing the widest and most expensive harm to society, but no federal funds had been confirmed beyond June 30. The fear wascuts by the Department of Social Services, which on Monday scrapped all future funding for financial counselling and housing advocacy groups like National Shelter, would also extend to drug treatment providers. Karralika drug outreach program chief executive Camilla Rowland said she feared $280,000 of federal funding for a family treatment program, to be exhausted … Continue reading

TO celebrate the season of lists, the Australian Science Media Centre has compiled the top ten science stories of 2014. Doctor Joe Milton from the SMC said the list is a great way to offer people bite-sized pieces of information covering all they may have forgotten or missed in science this year. Outbreak ... a healthcare worker dons protective gear before entering an Ebola treatment centre in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Picture: AP Photo/Michael Duff Source: AP THE West African Ebola outbreak was arguably the biggest science story of the year. The spread of the disease caught the attention of the globe as it played on our innate fear of the unknown. As the infections and death toll spiralled, so did our imaginations and we couldnt help but envisage the possibility of a worldwide pandemic. Luckily, that is looking highly unlikely. While there is still a long way to go before ending the outbreak, the number of new cases is decreasing while the chances of survival are rising.
