Girl bullied over severe eczema so bad she was called 'snake-skin' becomes beauty queen

Posted: Published on December 26th, 2014

A woman who was subjected to a bullying ordeal due to her severe eczema has hit back against her tormentors - by being becoming a top beauty queen. Shelley-Marie Sumner, 23, endured daily taunts of 'snake skin' throughout school due to the condition which affected her face and body and it left her desperately under-confident and considering self-harm. But the dance teacher refused to cower away after she left school and when her eczema eased off she entered a local beauty pageant at the suggestion of her boyfriend. Now she has had the last laugh after she was crowned Miss Black Country and went on to compete in the Miss England pageant. Shelley, from Walsall, West Midlands said: "I was picked on every day at school because of my eczema and it shattered my confidence. I never dreamed I would have the courage to enter a beauty pageant, let alone win, but I've finally shown the bullies that their words won't hold me back any more." Shelley-Marie had been born with sore red patches of eczema covering her body and although doctors told her mother Tracey-Marie that she would grow out of it, the condition only got worse. Business Briefs: Dec. 25, 2014 Sanford Jackson Medical Center has been designated a stroke-ready hospital. The local medical center joins 68 regional hospitals recently recognized for their preparedness to evaluate, stabilize and provide emergency treatment to patients with acute stroke symptoms. In 2013, the Minnesota Legislature authorized the Minnesota Department of Health to designate hospitals in Minnesota as stroke-ready hospitals. The designations from lowest to highest level of stroke care are Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals, Primary Stroke Centers and Comprehensive Stroke Centers. The Acute Stroke Ready Hospital designation means Sanford JMC is equipped to evaluate, stabilize and provide emergency care to patients with acute stroke symptoms. A stroke-ready hospital always has a stroke team available, has a CT scanner onsite and can administer a key clot-dissolving drug called tPA. The stroke-read hospital designation process is the principal component of the Minnesota Stroke System. Sanford JMC Administrator Mary Ruyter said the hospital sought the designation to improve operations and raise community awareness about the hospitals stroke care. When someone in our community recognizes his or her signs of a stroke, we want that person to know we are prepared to provide stroke-ready care, Ruyter said. MDH Commissioner of Health Ed Ehlinger … Continue reading

A Billings couple suspected of assaulting their 2-month-old son on Christmas prosecutors say he was choked and suffered a brain injury are being held in the Yellowstone County jail. Kayla Jean Edwards, 23, called 911 on Wednesday night and reported that her 2-month-old son had stopped breathing, a court document filed on Friday says. Medical personnel responded to a residence on the 200 block of Terry Avenue at about 8 p.m. and took the child to St. Vincent Healthcare for treatment, police said in a press release. The medical responders observed suspicious injuries on the infant and notified law enforcement, police said. The investigation revealed that the defendant struck her son in the head so hard that she caused a brain injury, an affidavit of probable cause states. The defendant then strangled her son to prevent him from breathing. The infant was in critical condition, Billings Police Lt. Jeremy House said on Friday afternoon. The childs other parent, 28-year-old Brandon Tory Edwards, admitted to watching and allowing the assault, as well as choking his newborn son on another occasion, records say. An Oct. 15 birth announcement in The Gazette lists the couple as having twins a boy and a girl. … Continue reading

Western Australian Brodie Smith's bid for ibogaine drug cure ends in death

Brodie Smith and his girlfriend, Kara Spark. Bangkok: Australian Brodie Smith was convinced a radical treatment using an African shrub would cure his craving for illegal drugs and turn his life around, even though it is banned in some countries. "Hey Mama Bear, I know it's been a while since I have actually seen or spoken to you . . . sorry, but I think it was mainly to do with me being ashamed, as once again I was on drugs and being around negative f---wits," he wrote to his mother on Facebook, only days before he stopped breathing, his eyes wide open while lying on a bed in a $19-a-night guesthouse on a remote Thai island. Advertisement Mr Smith, 33, assured his mother that even though it sounded unbelievable because the plant called ibogaine is hallucinogenic and is treated as a party drug, African tribes have been using it in its natural form for centuries in a rebirthing ceremony. "It has a 92 per cent chance of people not using [drugs again] within the first . . . months," he wrote. The night before he died in front of his girlfriend, Kara Spark, on the island of Ko Phangan … Continue reading
