New Study Confirms Link between Weight Loss and Blood Pressure for Individuals with Specific Genetic Polymorphisms

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

Newswise New Brunswick, NJ Your genetic makeup can help determine how well your body will respond to weight loss efforts aimed at controlling high blood pressure, a new study confirms. The multi-institutional study, led by researchers at The Cardiovascular Institute, part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, may help clarify how hypertension develops and progresses in certain individuals and also identify people for whom weight loss programs are most likely to help reduce blood pressure. Results were published in the current issue of Hypertension 2013;61:857-863. The Trial of Nonpharmacologic Interventions in the Elderly (TONE) looked at 21 polymorphisms that have been identified as relating to hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus to see what impact weight loss and sodium-reduction programs would have on blood pressure. Polymorphisms are the elements of a persons DNA that make it different from anothers and allow for diversity in such varied areas as eye color, hair texture, and even blood type. The TONE study identified several polymorphisms that relate to weight sensitivity with regard to hypertension, according to principal investigator John B. Kostis, MD, John G. Detwiler professor of cardiology, professor of medicine and pharmacology, associate dean for … Continue reading

Pradaxa Lawsuit News: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comments on Pradaxa’s New Blockbuster Status, in Light of Growing …

The Firm is currently investigating Pradaxa lawsuits on behalf of individuals who suffered life-threatening internal bleeding, allegedly due to Pradaxa side effects. New York, New York (PRWEB) April 24, 2013 We continue to hear from Pradaxa users who have allegedly suffered serious and life-threatening episodes of internal bleeding. In light of the allegations put forth in Pradaxa lawsuits, news of the drugs blockbuster status is concerning. It is important that patients being considered for Pradaxa therapy be fully apprised of the risks associated with its use, says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free legal evaluations to victims of alleged Pradaxa side effects. Pradaxa Side Effects Pradaxa was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. While Pradaxa was touted as an improvement over decades-old warfarin, Bloomberg.com recently reported that regulators in several countries have issued Pradaxa side effect alerts since the drug was first brought to market. Most concerning is the fact that there exists no readily-available antidote for the internal bleeding that can sometimes occur in patients treated with Pradaxa. In 2011 … Continue reading

DrugRisk Update: Court Asks for Pradaxa Lawsuit Test Cases

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 25, 2013 The drug safety advocates at DrugRisk.com are alerting patients taking the blood thinner Pradaxa of updated legal news on the site. A federal judge overseeing hundreds of lawsuits alleging Pradaxa internal bleeding has asked lawyers to prepare a small number of cases for evidence gathering and early test trials. The goal of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety by sharing the latest warnings, recalls, studies and legal news related to prescription drugs. Visitors can see if others are experiencing similar side effects and if legal action is under way. Pradaxa was launched in 2010 to prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. Experts, however, have disagreed over whether it presents dangerous risks for internal bleeding. The FDA recently advised that Pradaxa is no more dangerous than traditional blood thinner warfarin*. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices, however, warned that patients suffering Pradaxa bleeding are nearly 5 times as likely to die than those with bleeding from warfarin. They also named anticoagulants like Pradaxa among the most dangerous drugs**. With over 260 patients so far having filed a Pradaxa lawsuit alleging internal bleeding, cases have been consolidated to a special federal court in Illinois. The … Continue reading

Experimental drug for hepatitis C promising, studies show

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

| credits: A new treatment for difficult-to-treat hepatitis C has higher cure rates, takes less time and causes fewer side effects than the current therapy, new research finds. When the new drug, sofosbuvir, is combined with the medication ribavirin, cure rates are as high as traditional therapy, which pairs ribavirin and pegylated interferon, the researchers say. But patients taking sofosbuvir a once-a-day pill are spared the severe side effects associated with interferon. This is an exciting time in which we are witnessing a fundamental paradigm shift in the way we treat hepatitis C, said researcher Dr. Ira Jacobson, chief of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Many people with hepatitis C cant or wont use interferon, Jacobson said. Its side effects can include sleep problems, anxiety, irritability and depression as well as fatigue, headaches, fever and muscle aches. Hepatitis C is a virus spread by infected blood during transfusions, injection drug use or sexual contact. Untreated hepatitis C can cause progressive liver disease, such as cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure. In one of two new studies involving sofosbuvir, researchers treated patients who hadnt responded to interferon treatment or couldnt … Continue reading

Study: popular antiretroviral drug has same effect on brain as LSD

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

Antiretroviral drugs are vital for those trying to keep HIV and AIDS at bay, but the psychedelic side effects of one common drug might take some users by surprise. Efavirenz, a drug that is usually used in conjunction with other drugs as a cocktail to fight type one HIV (HIV-1), has a range of side effects that includes feelings of terror, severedepression, paranoia, psychosis and delusional hallucinations. Much to the surprise of researchers investigating these side effects, it turns out that efevirenz has a similar effect on the brain as lysergic acid diethylamide -- known to most as LSD. The recreational side effects of efavirenz are not something new -- for years in South Africa people have been smoking crushed efavirenz pills(sometimes with marijuana or other drugs) for an easy high in a mixture known as "wunga". A terrible side effect of this is that, in a country where 17.8 percent of adults are carrying the HIV virus (the fourth-highest rate in the world), people are training their bodies to be immune to antiretroviral drugs. The psychedelic side effects of efavirenz are also seen in people who take it as medically prescribed, however, with some people developing adverse psychiatric conditions … Continue reading

Clicks sees tough times persisting for while longer

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

CLICKS Group on Thursday warned in its results for the six months ended February that the headwinds of constrained consumer spending and squeezed margins were likely to persist. "I cant see any reason why retail trading conditions are going to change at all in the remainder of this calendar year," CE David Kneale said. "The economy is stuck in a pretty low gear." Like other retailers, the company is faced with consumers who have become more cautious on spending as a result of rising household debt and escalating cost pressures. Clicks reported diluted headline earning per share of 142.7c from 131.5c in the same period last year. Turnover increased 11.4% to R8.5bn, with selling price inflation of 2 % for the period. Equity analyst Daniel Isaacs of 36One Asset Management said that overall, the groups results were disappointing. "They (grew ) diluted earnings 8.5%, which is not great, especially for the price that the stock is trading at. "The results reflect a weak consumer, low inflation and high-cost growth. They mention that pharmacy costs grew 25%, which is quite significant." Turnover growth of 7% in the Clicks chain was driven by increased promotional activity. "In this environment, to move the … Continue reading

Bay County mom says parole system failed her drug-addicted son facing armed robbery charge

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

BAY CITY, MI As her drug-addicted son sits in jail on a charge of armed robbery, just months after being paroled, a Bay County mother wonders if state probation officials could have done more to halt his downward spiral. Bay City police allege Victor J. Schalk, 37, on the early morning of Monday, April 8, held up the 7-Eleven at 801 N. Henry St. The stores clerk told police the robber had a hand in his pocket and looked to be pointing a gun at him as he demanded cash. Schalk is being held without bond at the Bay County Jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary examination on Thursday, May 2, in Bay County District Court. Schalks mother, Jaki Herman, said her son is addicted to crack cocaine, and that dependence has led him to commit a series of crimes. She feels the Michigan Department of Corrections system for releasing and monitoring parolees failed to adequately address her sons dependency issues. But a Michigan Department of Corrections official says parole officers took extra steps to help Schalk and his case was properly managed. Schalk himself could not be reached for comment, since Bay County Jail policy does not allow … Continue reading

I-Team: Prescription drug abuse an epidemic

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2013

April 25, 2013 (WLS) -- There may be a drug addict in your house and you may be their supplier. Federal authorities call it an epidemic. Prescription drug abuse is causing overdoses and turning regular people into criminals. Popping painkillers, becoming addicted and then taking extreme measures to get more pills. Prescription drug overdoses now outnumber those of heroin and cocaine combined. David Reveles is a student at Elmhurst College. At age 14, the star wrestler began smoking marijuana and quickly moved on to prescription drugs. "Six months after my first marijuana use I dabbled into other stuff I don't even remember what I was doing, whatever I could get my hands on," he said. Reveles struggled through high school, in and out of nine treatment centers Thanksgiving 2004, an 18-wheeler hit Cheryl Edwards' car. She fractured her neck and soon became addicted to prescription painkillers. "You take pain pills for a length of time and when you go through withdrawals, that causes pain," she said. "Withdrawals cause pain. So, naturally you're going to think I'm in pain and I need a pain pill. "When you are desperate like that and you need something, I looked at pills as my … Continue reading
