BIND Therapeutics and AstraZeneca Announce Worldwide Development and Commercialization Agreement for Cancer Nanomedicine

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2013

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. & WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BIND Therapeutics and AstraZeneca announced today that they have entered into a strategic collaboration to develop and commercialize an AccurinTM, a targeted and programmable cancer nanomedicine from BINDs Medicinal Nanoengineering platform, based on a molecularly targeted kinase inhibitor developed and owned by AstraZeneca. The collaboration is based on emerging data suggesting that nanomedicines like Accurins selectively accumulate in diseased tissues and cells, leading to higher drug concentrations at the site of the tumor and reduced exposure to healthy tissues. Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will work together to complete Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling studies of the lead Accurin identified from a previously-completed feasibility program. AstraZeneca will then have the exclusive right to lead development and commercialization and BIND will lead manufacturing during the development phase. BIND could receive upfront and pre-approval milestone payments totaling $69 million, and more than $130 million in regulatory and sales milestones and other payments as well as tiered single to double-digit royalties on future sales. We are excited to grow this collaboration with AstraZeneca, a leading global biopharmaceutical company committed to developing innovative medicines for patients, said Scott Minick, President and CEO of BIND. For Bind, this is its third global partnership with a big pharma company in four months. Amgen and Pfizer Inc. have also recently entered agreements to gain access to Binds nanomedicine technology to develop new drugs. Collectively, these three collaborations have a potential to be worth nearly $1 billion to Bind, a Bind spokeswoman said in an e-mail. Binds nanotechnology is based on research by Professor Robert Langer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Professor Omid Farokhzad of Harvard Medical School. Last month, Moderna Therapeutics disclosed that it would receive a $240 million upfront payment to license its protein-stimulating technology to AstraZeneca. Scottsdale Regenerative Cell Therapy treatment center, Premier Pain Institute, has opened up a new clinic that facilitates state of the art procedures for pain treatment. Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) April 22, 2013 The philosophy of the new Scottsdale regenerative cell therapy center, the Premier Pain Institute is to treat each and every patient based on his or her specific diagnosis. With a one-on-one, doctor-to-patient, approach, the Premier Pain Institute ensures that every patient is carefully evaluated and diagnosed. Each patient then receives a specific treatment formulated to target the direct condition that is causing the pain. The Premier Pain Institute simply does not believe in a one-solution-cures-all methodology. Also, the Scottsdale regenerative cell therapy center, the Premier Pain Institute is not just for people with chronic back pain, but people suffering from carpal tunnel, post-surgical pain, hands/wrists/feet pain, headaches and neck pains, and more. BLADE STAFF Drop-off sites for unneeded or expired medications will be set up Saturday at five firehouses throughout the Anthony Wayne school district. Over-the-counter, prescription, or veterinary medications in pills or capsules, and vitamins, will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event allows people to dispose of these drugs in a safe and environmentally friendly way. The local drug drop-off is part of a nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day promoted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Ann Cherry, a Waterville city councilman involved in the event, said people may pour all unneeded medications into locking plastic bags if they dont want to turn in pill bottles with their names on them. Organizers also will destroy the labels. The Waterville Fire Departments site is drive-through. Other area fire stations with drop-offs include the Monclova, Whitehouse, and Providence Township departments and the Springfield Township station at 7145 Garden Rd. Marijuana Pill May Be Better for Pain

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2013

A pill form of marijuana may work just as well to relieve pain as the smoked form, but with fewer side effects, new research suggests. In the study, people who either smoked marijuana or took the drug dronabinol a pill that contains the active ingredient of marijuana were able to hold their hands in a bath of ice water (showing that they could tolerate the pain of the cold temperature) for longer than participants who took a placebo. What's more, the pain-reducing effect of dronabinol lasted longer than that of smoking marijuana, the researchers said. While smoking the drug decreased pain sensitivity for about 2.5, the pill continued to have pain-reducing effects for about 4.5 hours. However, analgesic effects of the pill took about an hour to kick in, compared with about 15 minutes for smoking marijuana. Medical marijuana is legal in 18 states, and studies have suggested that smoking the drug relieves pain. For instance, a 2010 study found that smoking marijuana eased pain from nerve injuries. However, "smoking anything presents certain health risks," said study researcher Ziva Cooper, an assistant professor of clinical neurobiology at Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry. Substances in the smoke can reduce lung function … Continue reading

Also, DrugRisk contains a study from the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology which highlights the risks for women who must undergo surgery to remove an IUD like Mirena after the devices dislodge and perforate into the abdominal cavity**. Due to the growing number of patients filing a Mirena lawsuit, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation issued a Transfer Order on April 8, centralizing all cases filed in the Mirena MDL to the Southern District of New York (In Re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434). By Jerome Burne PUBLISHED: 18:50 EST, 22 April 2013 | UPDATED: 01:41 EST, 23 April 2013 There has been increasing concern that drug companies have not provided the full picture about new medicines Several years ago, Anne-Marie Cook, a 40-year-old health care assistant from Surrey, was prescribed the antidepressant Seroxat after shed become anxious and withdrawn following the death of her father. Within a few months she began to feel better and started going out with friends again. Sensibly, she checked the drug information leaflet to make sure it was all right to have alcohol while on the medication. There is no known interaction between Seroxat and alcohol, it read. But this isnt the whole story, as Anne-Marie learned to her cost. In rare cases, there is an interaction. She had no idea of it at the time, but with hindsight it explains her changed behaviour. After just a couple of drinks I started to become verbally aggressive and reckless, says Anne-Marie (not her real name). Once I started drinking I found it hard to stop. I also found I was becoming confused after drinking alcohol. I got banned from restaurants and bars in my local town and became an … Continue reading
