Measure would create liability for addictive drugs

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2013

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- A bill that would allow patients addicted to prescription drugs to sue the doctors who prescribed the medication and the drug's makers was met with stiff opposition Wednesday in a Nevada legislative hearing. Sen. Tick Segerblom, D-Las Vegas, said doctors aware of the risks associated with addiction from prescription drugs should be responsible if those adverse effects are realized. "They know the person can get addicted to the drug so they should pay for the process of them getting off it," said Segerblom, the sponsor of SB75. People who packed hearing rooms in Carson City and Las Vegas were overwhelmingly opposed to the measure. Sen. Ruben Kihuen, D-Las Vegas, as acting chairman urged testifiers to keep their remarks short because of the large number of vocal opponents. "This bill ties the hands of physicians and takes away the rights of patients to choose which risk to assume while seeking treatment for their diseases," said David Johnson, a Las Vegas physician. "Yes, some drugs may be addictive, but that may be the less important issue when fighting the disease or symptom." Conditions such as cancer often require potentially addictive drugs that come with the risk of … Continue reading

By Dahl Erickson on Mar 7, 2013 in News, Sports After an ugly start that saw Star Valley trailing Wheatland 8-0 with nearly six minutes elapsed, the Braves offense came alive and finished the first half on a 23-8 run to lead by seven at the intermission in a 56-31 win. We were thinking it was a little bit like that Powell gamer there in that first quarter, said head coach Tony Saras, referring to Star Valleys 37-point output in last weeks regional championship. Lets not even talk about that quarter like it happened. After that, Im pretty happy with how we played. We played tough defense and were able to knock down some shots. The Braves defense, even during their scoreless portion of the game, was still solid, allowing just ten points to Wheatland in the first period. The Bulldogs only scored 21 in the remaining three quarters as the crimson & gold forced 20 turnovers and saw 11 different players get into the scoring column. Dalton Passey hit the floor hard on more than one occasion and had a huge offensive rebound and a putback just before the second period expired. He had the game-high of 16 points. … Continue reading

By Dahl Erickson on Mar 7, 2013 in Education, Sports The Lady Braves jumped out early and pulled away for a 64-32 victory against the Buffalo Lady Bison in the opening round of the Wyoming State 3A basketball championships at the Casper Events Center. Our backcourt defense was phenomenal this morning, said head coach Rob Erickson. We were able to turn them over and convert for some easy baskets and I was pleased with how well we looked for each other; made the extra pass and got layups out of it. It was the second early morning blowout win in the past seven days for the Lady Braves who beat Mountain View 64-24 last week. Im starting to like these morning games, Erickson smiled. With Buffalo threatening to draw to within single digits early in the second period, Nicoll ripped down an offensive rebound out of the hands of a Bison opponent and put it up and in for two points. She then immediately stole the inbound pass and deftly passed it to Greenwood for another layup. Greenwood, known as Bruce to the Star Valley faithful then stole the ball and collected another layup. It was part of a 9-0 … Continue reading

Pharmacy insider on causes of meningitis outbreak

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2013

(CBS News) A pharmacy called New England Compounding Center is under criminal investigation. Last fall, it shipped 17,000 vials of a contaminated steroid to 23 states. Hundreds of people are still fighting horrific infections caused by the drug, and patients continue to die -- the most recent just 10 days ago. Julie Otto We've never heard from anyone inside New England Compounding until now. A "60 Minutes" investigation has discovered how a pharmacy -- not supervised by the FDA -- came to ship toxic drugs across the country to unsuspecting patients. "I've been in the hospital seven times, total of 75 days," says Julie Otto, one of the injured patients we met at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital outside Detroit. "I've missed Thanksgiving and Christmas and my son's birthday." These patients were injected with the steroid to relieve chronic pain. Now, a fungus is inside them. The drug was produced by New England Compounding, known as NECC, outside Boston. Joe Connolly, a lab technician there, is the first to speak out about what happened. This is the fungus inside patients who were injected with tainted steroids made by NECC. This sample was grown from the spinal fluid of a patient. "The … Continue reading

Pushing the boundaries: Study provides key insight into how cells fuse

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2013

Mar. 7, 2013 Researchers at Johns Hopkins have established a high-efficiency cell-cell fusion system, providing a new model to study how fusion works. The scientists showed that fusion between two cells is not equal and mutual as some assumed, but, rather, is initiated and driven by one of the fusion partners. The discovery, they say, could lead to improved treatments for muscular dystrophy, since muscle regeneration relies on cell fusion to make muscle fibers that contain hundreds or even thousands of nuclei. The study reveals two critical components that have to be present for cell fusion to happen, explains Elizabeth Chen, Ph.D., an associate professor of molecular biology and genetics in the Johns Hopkins University Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences. Intriguingly, she says, one of these vital components actually changes the structure of one cell's scaffolding -- its cytoskeleton -- to form protrusions that push their way into the other cell to initiate fusion. Chen's research group had seen this before; using very high-resolution electron microscopy, they showed in 2010 that in developing fly muscles, a muscle cell merges with another muscle cell by extending finger-like protrusions into its fusion partner. But cell fusion is not only behind muscle building, … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2013

Mark McAllisterCanadian television broadcaster Mark McAllister attained an unfortunate moment of infamy two years ago when he garbled a live segment on Global Toronto. McAllister was diagnosed with epilepsy less than a month later, and has been balancing the affliction with his family life and career ever since. McAllister will publicly discuss his condition for the first time in a weekend news feature, part of which will air on Global Toronto Thursday evening. [ Brew Archives: Global reporter feeling better after on-air incoherence ] McAllister spoke with Yahoo! Canada News ahead of that broadcast. Y! Lets talk first about the on-air incident in 2011. Is that the first time something like that had happened to you? No, it was the first time it was as public as it was. I had been experiencing what my wife and I had been calling episodes prior to that moments where I would lose my train of thought or would just stop speaking for moments at a time. I had no idea what … Continue reading
