IBM and The Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology Develop New Antimicrobial Hydrogel to Fight Superbugs and …

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Researchers from IBM (NYSE: IBM) and the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology revealed today an antimicrobial hydrogel that can break through diseased biofilms and completely eradicate drug-resistant bacteria upon contact. The synthetic hydrogel, which forms spontaneously when heated to body temperature, is the first-ever to be biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic, making it an ideal tool to combat serious health hazards facing hospital workers, visitors and patients. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090416/IBMLOGO ) Traditionally used for disinfecting various surfaces, antimicrobials can be found in traditional household items like alcohol and bleach. However, moving from countertops to treating drug resistant skin infections or infectious diseases in the body are proving to be more challenging as conventional antibiotics become less effective and many household surface disinfectants are not suitable for biological applications. IBM Research and its collaborators developed a remoldable synthetic antimicrobial hydrogel, comprised of more than 90% water, which, if commercialized, is ideal for applications like creams or injectable therapeutics for wound healing, implant and catheter coatings, skin infections or even orifice barriers. Able to colonize on almost any tissue or surface, microbial biofilms - which are adhesive groupings of diseased cells present in 80% of all infections … Continue reading

Controlled and targeted release of drugs

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

24.01.2013 - (idw) Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF Nanomedicine Researchers have discovered a method that allows for the controlled release of an active agent on the basis of a magnetic nanovehicle. The research, conducted as part of the National Research Programme "Smart Materials" (NRP 62), opens up new possibilities for the develop-ment of targeted treatments, which are more efficient and trigger fewer side effects. Certain drugs are toxic by nature. For example, anti-cancer drugs developed to kill diseased cells also harm healthy ones. To limit the side effects of chemotherapy, it would be a great step forward if it were possible to release a drug only in the affected area of the body. In the context of the National Research Programme "Smart Materials" (NRP 62) - a cooperation between the SNSF and the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI) - researchers of ETH Lausanne, the Adolphe Merkle Institute and the University Hospital of Geneva have discovered a method that might represent an important step towards the development of an intelligent drug of this kind. By combining their expert knowledge in the areas of material sciences, biological nanomaterials and medicine, they were able to prove the feasibility of using a nanovehicle to transport … Continue reading

Half a Million DVDs of Data Stored in Gram of DNA

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

By Robert F. Service, ScienceNOW Paleontologists routinely resurrect and sequence DNA from woolly mammoths and other long-extinct species. Future paleontologists, or librarians, may do much the same to pull up Shakespeares sonnets, listen to Martin Luther King Jr.s I have a dream speech, or view photos. Researchers in the United Kingdom report today that theyve encoded these works and others in DNA and later sequenced the genetic material to reconstruct the written, audio, and visual information. The new work isnt the first example of large-scale storage of digital information in DNA. Last year, researchers led by bioengineers Sriram Kosuri and George Church of Harvard Medical School reported that they stored a copy of one of Churchs books in DNA, among other things, at a density of about 700 terabits per gram, more than six orders of magnitude more dense than conventional data storage on a computer hard disk. Now, researchers led by molecular biologists Nick Goldman and Ewan Birney of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in Hinxton, U.K., report online today in Nature that theyve improved the DNA encoding scheme to raise that storage density to a staggering 2.2 petabytes per gram, three times the previous effort. To do so, … Continue reading

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 24, 2013 The patient advocates at DrugRisk.com are alerting patients taking the birth control drugs Yaz or Yasmin of new information on the site showing patient claims over alleged blood clots from the drugs has now spread as far as Europe, as settlements continue in the United States. DrugRisks goal is to improve patient safety through education. By providing the public with the latest information, patients can have informed discussions with their doctors about drug side effects and decide if they need to seek the advice of a lawyer, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. The resource center contains warnings from experts like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who stated that birth control pills containing drospirenone, such as Yaz and Yasmin, may have a higher risk of causing blood clots.* DrugRisk has also learned that thousands of patients in the U.S. have filed a Yaz lawsuit over blood clots. These have been consolidated to a special federal Multi-District Litigation court in Illinois. The formal case is known as Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100, Southern District Illinois). ‘Side Effects’ International Trailer: Now With More Plot

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Posted on Thursday, January 24th, 2013 by Angie Han As Steven Soderbergh hurtles toward retirement, hes dropping one last theatrical feature. (He also has the HBO movie Behind the Candelabra, but thats not hitting cinemas.) In Side Effects, Rooney Mara plays a woman dealing with her husbands (Channing Tatum) imminent release from prison. To help her cope with her anxiety, her psychiatrist (Jude Law) puts her on some new drugs. And then, somehow, everything goes terribly wrong. I say somehow because the last couple of trailers have purposely been vague about the plotline. Characters walked around saying dramatic things against an unsettling backdrop of growing tension, and because all of it looked pretty well done, that was enough to attract some curiosity. But the latest interntional trailer finally gives us a better idea of what, exactly, happens in this movie. Watch it after the jump. The Guardian(viaFirst Showing) posted the new UK trailer. I havent seen the movie itself so Im not sure how much this trailer gives away, but its definitely more spoiler-y than the American versions weve seen so far. Click away from this post if youd rather stay in the dark. The last two trailers had me … Continue reading

Costco Dividend Stock Analysis for 2013

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Costco Wholesale (COST) is a large membership warehouse retailer that sells a variety of bulk goods in several countries. -Seven Year Revenue Growth Rate: 9.4% -Seven Year EPS Growth Rate: 8.6% -Seven Year Dividend Growth Rate: 13.3% -Current Dividend Yield: 1.08% -Balance Sheet Strength: Strong Costco is one of the lowest yielding stocks that I publish analysis articles on when not taking into account their recent huge one-time special dividend. Overall, much like last year, I think Costco is a fantastic company and a respectable stock for long-term capital appreciation, but at the current time, I view it as fully valued with little or no margin of safety, and it doesnt offer a very appealing regular dividend yield. With over 170,000 employees, Costco operates 622 warehouses. Of these, 448 are in the US and Puerto Rico, 85 are in Canada, 32 are in Mexico, 23 are in the UK, 13 are in Japan, 9 are in Taiwan, 9 are in Korea, and 3 are in Australia. In addition, Costco operates its large online retail site. Sundries (cleaning supplies, tobacco, alcohol, candy, snacks, etc.) accounted for 22% of 2011 sales. Hardlines (electronics, hardware, office supplies, beauty supplies, furniture, garden, etc.) accounted … Continue reading
