Desperate patients seek stem-cell 'miracle,' but scientists warn of hidden dangers

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

Boca Raton parents Gary and Judy Susser say the know the hope and promise of stem-cell therapy. Nine years ago they traveled to Mexico for stem cell injections for their son Adam, who has cerebral palsy. "Maybe it will do some good," Gary Susser said he and his wife thought at the time. They spent $25,000. But the Sussers stopped stem cell injections in 2005, after spending about $25,000 and seeing no improvement. Now armed with more information, the Sussers are grateful the treatments didn't harm Adam, now 12. While they are advocates of "responsible" stem cell research, they warn other parents against making trips to Costa Rica, Mexico, Russia or other offshore clinics for experimental treatments. With promising breakthroughs making the news, as well as Internet hype, desperate parents and seriously ill patients may look to stem-cell therapy as the modern miracle that could cure them. And one day, stem cells may be routinely used to repair damaged cells, improve the treatment of diseases and even cure paralysis. But there are hidden dangers to today's stem cell treatments, both in the U.S. and offshore, scientists said at the recent World Stem Cell Summit in West Palm Beach. They pointed … Continue reading

Erectile Dysfunction can not get it hard ? low testosterone Scott Bryant http://www.ActiveBryantSystems.com Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence) Erectile dysfunction (ED) means that you cannot get a proper erection. There are various causes. However, most cases are due to narrowing of the arteries that take blood to the penis. This is due to a build up of atheroma in these arteries. This is similar to the way the heart arteries are affected in people with heart disease. As with heart disease, smoking and heavy alcohol drinking are important risk factors. There are various other causes of ED listed below. Most cases of ED can be treated. The common treatment is to take a tablet before you plan to have sex. There are also various other treatment options. If you have ED, you may also be advised on lifestyle factors and treatments to minimise your risk of developing heart disease. What is erectile dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction (ED) means that you cannot get and maintain an erection. In some cases the penis becomes partly erect, but not hard enough to have sex properly. In some cases, there is no swelling or fullness of the penis at all. ED is sometimes called impotence. How common … Continue reading

MarketExclusive.com: OncoSec offers great opportunities but investors are wary

OncoSec offers great opportunities but investors are wary Direct Link: http://marketexclusive.com/news/details/4500-OncoSec-offers-great-opportunities-but-investors-are-wary Side effects are a main problem when it comes to treatments for solid tumor cancers. Extreme nausea, fatigue, skin discoloration and hair loss are among the more prevalent results associated with the most widely used treatments. In fact, in many cases, these side effects produced more traumatic and debilitating results than the disease itself. Standard treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and immunotherapy techniques required large doses of the necessary drug to get the desired result, whereas smaller amounts were ineffective. Depending upon the drug, the treatments could produce anything from mildly toxic to outright fatal consequences. To solve this problem researchers are concentrating on delivery systems to help cancer patients get proper treatment with minimal side effects. OncoSec Medical (OTCBB:ONCS), a biotech company listed on the NASDAQ Bulletin Board, is one of them. OncoSec has developed a new delivery technology that vastly reduces the necessary drug dosage. Since over 120,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year in the U.S., and 50 million people worldwide suffer from the decease, the benefit from new technologies can be huge. OncoSec developed a proprietary process called the OncoSec Medical System … Continue reading

New method for uncovering side effects before a drug hits the market

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

Jan. 2, 2013 Side effects are a major reason that drugs are taken off the market and a major reason why patients stop taking their medications, but scientists are now reporting the development of a new way to predict those adverse reactions ahead of time. The report on the method, which could save patients from severe side effects and save drug companies time and money, appears in ACS' Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling. Yoshihiro Yamanishi and colleagues explain that drug side effects are a major health problem -- the fourth-leading cause of death in the U.S. -- which by some estimates claim 100,000 lives every year. Serious side effects are the main reason why existing drugs must be removed from the market and why pharmaceutical companies halt development of new drugs after investing millions of dollars. Current methods of testing for side effects are costly and inaccurate. That's why the scientists sought to develop a new computer-based approach to predicting possible side effects. They show the usefulness of their proposed method on simultaneous prediction of 969 side effects of 658 drugs that already are in wide medical use. The method is based on knowledge about chemical and biological information … Continue reading

New law hopes to solve drug dependent baby epidemic

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - January 1st marked a big step in the fight to stop the birth of babies dependent on drugs. A law passed in 2012 goes into effect, requiring hospitals across the state to track babies born with symptoms in an online database. "This addition will allow us to have more real-time data about NAS incidence and will help inform future efforts aimed at primary evaluation of NAS," said Commissioner John J. Dreyzehner. Until now, hospitals have individually tracked results and the state relied on discharge records to count the number of babies affected in our state. "You have, you know, only a certain amount of resources so you want to put those resources to the best use you can. So we're trying to find out exactly how many babies are affected, and where those babies are located," said East Tennessee Children's Hospital neonatologist Dr. John Buchheit. ETCH receives NAS babies from all across the state. A year ago, it created the world's first unit designed especially to treat babies with drug dependency. The unit's 16 beds have never been fully occupied since day one, and overflow always stretches into several NICUs. Numbers at Children's have tripled just … Continue reading

Drop-off boxes get drugs out of the house

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

Prescription drug abuse has been classified as an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationwide, approximately 60 percent of teens say that access to prescription drugs is easy via their home medicine cabinets or that of a friend or relative, said Joan Whitney, director of Substance Abuse Prevention for the city of Gloucester. Easy access and low perception of harm by youths creates a recipe for danger for misuse with the possibility of dependency that can lead to addiction. The Drug Enforcement Administration estimates that very day, on average, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. Whitney said prescription drug abuse is not only a community and family concern, but also a concern for prescribers and, ultimately, law enforcement. In 2007, approximately 27,000 overdose deaths occurred in the United States, Whitney said, explaining that equates to one death every 19 minutes. Whitney said the Centers for Disease Control cites two general categories as contributing to problems from use those in need of long-term medical use of opioids and those who report non-medical use. Gloucester, as other communities throughout Massachusetts and the nation, has struggled with effects of prescription drug misuse and abuse, … Continue reading
