Cerebral palsy patient undergoes surgery to enable her to walk

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

NUSAJAYA: Eight-year-old cerebral palsy patient Mok Swee Yeng has always wanted to walk and run around like a normal child but her movements were restricted by her condition since she was two. She could only rely on her grandmother, who takes care of her daily and carries her everywhere, to go to the bathroom and move around. But Swee Yengs dreams would soon come true as she underwent orthopaedic surgery sponsored by Columbia Asia Hospital here recently to tune the muscles around her knees to enable her to walk normally. Two consultant orthopaedic surgeons and two consultant anaesthetics successfully conducted the 90-minute procedure. Swee Yengs mother Wong Poi Poi, 25, said she heaved a sigh of relieve after seeing her daughter being wheeled out of the operating theatre. When she gained conscious, she kept crying in pain and I feel my heart breaking and could not help but cry with her. But at the same time I am glad that she will be able to run around like a normal child soon, she said. Swee Yengs grandmother Lee Choy Kheng, 57, who takes care of Swee Yeng by herself while Wong works in Kuala Lumpur as a make-up artist, said … Continue reading

Brain Injury and Stress Disorder Strong Indicators of Vision Problems for Veterans

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - Nov 11, 2012) - Many veterans of the United States armed forces who have traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder also have undiagnosed, chronic vision problems, according to two studies presented today at the 116th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, jointly conducted this year with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. New Recognition of What Traumatic Brain Injury Can Mean for Veterans' Vision In a study conducted at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Washington, D.C., researchers found that vision problems in veterans with mild TBI are much more common and persistent than previously recognized, with 67 percent of the 31 patients studied reporting chronic vision disorders. Though none of the affected veterans had suffered direct eye wounds, their vision continued to be impaired more than a year after they endured the injuries that caused their TBI. The vision problems most frequently reported by the veterans in the study were convergence, which is the ability to focus both eyes simultaneously in order to read or see other nearby objects, and sensitivity to light. Veterans' ability to readjust their focus when moving their gaze between far and near objects, known as accommodation, was also reduced. … Continue reading

Concerns Over Treatment Of Child Abuse Victims

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

The original whistleblower in the North Wales care home scandal has told Sky News abuse victims are being failed again. Alison Taylor campaigned for years on behalf of the victims after taking the brave decision to speak out. In 1986 she was sacked as head of a North Wales care home but her determination to expose abuse led to police investigations, criminal prosecutions and eventually the Waterhouse Inquiry. Ms Taylor is now dismayed at the media storm surrounding the botched Newsnight broadcast and the implications it has for victims of child abuse. She told Sky News: "I think it has thrown us right back to the pre-North Wales investigations." "It was hard enough then - it was a real uphill struggle to get the police to investigate anything." Ms Taylor also believes that Steve Messham, the man who originally spoke to Newsnight about his alleged abusers and has now acknowledged that he was mistaken, is now being unfairly treated. She said: "Steve, who genuinely was a victim, is now being perceived in some quarters as a man who has made false allegations. "There are a lot of people who clearly have a vested interest in playing down the abuse allegations." … Continue reading

College freshman moving on despite diability

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

November 11, 2012 (WLS) -- Friedreich's ataxia, a complicated genetic disability, usually begins before puberty when areas that control coordination, movements, and functions start failing. A young west suburban college student is moving on with her life plans with a positive outlook, despite her disability. Eighteen-year-old Nicole Kramer has an amazing attitude about herself and her disability. Challenged by a heart condition, scoliosis and some speech difficulty, she is determined to succeed. At the College of DuPage, Kramer is just like any other first semester student. "It's going good," she said. "I like it a lot." Even though DuPage's campus is big, Kramer needs very little accommodations getting around. "Walking has been increasingly getting worse and harder," she said. "I don't have much walking cause all my classes are in one building. So I've been doing fine with it. I've been getting into class on time so I haven't needed anything but the only thing that I really use is like the elevator because it's easier." At the age of 15 Kramer was diagnosed with Friedreich's ataxia. Her mom, Kelly, said she had scoliosis when she was in 7th grade. "Then after wearing her brace, we found her heart condition … Continue reading

Causes of movement disorders include nerve diseases (i.e. Parkinson's disease), injuries, infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain medicines, although many are inherited. Treatment varies for the different disorders. Army of Women Research Results: A conversation with Dr. Janet Carpenter The Love/Avon Army of Women is excited to provide an opportunity to virtually meet Dr. Janet Carpenter, who conducted the "Breathe for Hot Flashes" study. The Army of Women played a vital role in the success of the study; Dr. Carpenter said they "had spent a year in clinics and obtained about the same number of women but at a significantly greater cost in terms of dollars and staff time." The focus of the study was to investigate whether women could learn how to manage their hot flashes through breathing. Menopausal hormone therapy has been the most effective treatment for hot flashes. But there are many menopausal women who do not want to use hormones because they are concerned about side effects; additionally, hormones are not an option for breast cancer survivors. This is your opportunity to meet the researchers, get an update about the study, and hear the Q A that followed.From:loveavonarmyofwomenViews:28 0ratingsTime:41:47More inNonprofits Activism Follow this link: Army of Women Research Results: A conversation with Dr. Janet Carpenter - Video … Continue reading
