Marijuana extract may help MS patients

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

An extract made from an active ingredient in marijuana may be able to help multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with their muscle stiffness. MS is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, which includes the brain, optic nerves and spinal cord according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. About 400,000 Americans and 2.1 million people worldwide have MS, with 200 more being diagnosed every week in the U.S. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 to 50, and twice as many men have MS than women. While it can develop in all ethnic groups, it is often found in Caucasians of northern European ancestry. Symptoms occur when an immune-system attack targets myelin, the material that protects the nerve fibers of the central nervous system. It destroys the myelin and creates scarred or "sclerotic" tissue. The disease can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis and blindness, among other symptoms. Muscle stiffness also occurs in 90 percent of the cases, according to the study researchers. PropThink: ELN Under Pressure On ECTRIMS Meeting & Valuation

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

By David Moskowitz With Biogen-Idec`s (BIIB) new multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment, BG-12, approaching a decision by the FDA (PDUFA date December 28th), enthusiasm in the medical community is building for this highly effective, safe, and orally administered treatment for the disease. As we noted in a prior article, the chance that BIIB would acquire Elan Corp. (ELN) given the impending launch of BG-12 appears to be slim to none (see PropThink`s prior story here). Importantly, the large medical conference, ECTRIMS (European Committee for Treatment and Research In Multiple Sclerosis) starts Wednesday, and we are hearing that the noise on BG-12 in the research community and on Wall Street is building significantly, with physicians indicating that most newly diagnosed patients and patients moving to alternative treatments will likely end up on BG-12 therapy given its clear benefits. That`s a big problem for ELN, given that its lead value driver and MS treatment, Tysabri, heavily depends on new patient starts to maintain and grow its sales base. Tysabri sales are currently growing in the 13-15% range, and unlike BG-12`s oral preparation, Tysabri is administered in a hospital or clinic as a one hour IV infusion. In addition, because of the drug`s impact … Continue reading

Canadian study tracks MS patients after ‘liberation treatment’

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

CTVNews.ca Staff Published Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 10:44PM EDT Last Updated Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 8:08AM EDT A Canadian study that tracked 80 multiple sclerosis patients who underwent the controversial liberation treatment outside of the country suggests that about half of them saw their symptoms improve after the procedure. Researchers in British Columbia surveyed 80 people over the phone one year after they received the controversial treatment, which involves opening up blocked veins to improve blood flow from the brain. The picture that seems to be coming out is that about half of the patients feel some improvements in MS symptoms. The degree of improvements ranges from mild to significant, Dr. Anthony Traboulsee, medical director of the UBC Hospital MS Clinic, told CTV News. And about half the patients feel exactly the same as before the procedure or worse. About 11 per cent of surveyed patients reported complications around the time they received the liberation treatment. Another 13.8 per cent experienced troubles up to one month afterward. Pain and bleeding were among the complications experienced. One patient suffered a stroke after the procedure while another one reported symptoms similar to those of a heart attack. Nine patients had difficulties related … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy 'lowers heart disease risk'

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

Washington, October 10 (ANI): In a new study, researchers carried out a randomised trial over 10 years with additional six years of follow-up to establish whether Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can reduce cardiovascular risk if it is started early after menopause. HRT therapy has been subject to much discussion due to both positive effects and negative effects. A paper published in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Healthcare back in January cast doubt on the "unreliable" Million Women Study which associated HRT with an increased risk of breast cancer. Conflicting results have led clinicians to believe that time since menopause until HRT is initiated can account for differences in cardiovascular outcome. 1006 women (504 in HRT group and 502 in non-HRT group) were included in the study by researchers from Denmark and all were white, healthy, recently menopausal and aged 45-58 years old. Women who'd had a hysterectomy were only included if they were aged 45-52. Exclusion criteria were if they had a history of bone disease, uncontrolled chronic disease, previous or current cancer, current or previous use of HRT within the past three months and alcohol or drug addiction. All data on diagnoses or death were taken from … Continue reading

HRC Medical Centers ordered to stop making certain claims about Amor Vie therapy

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

The company that owns a hormone replacement clinic in Memphis was ordered Wednesday to temporarily stop making certain claims about one of its treatments. Some of the claims from HRC Medical Centers Inc, a chain of hormone replacement therapy clinics, were unsubstantiated and the company filed to advise patients of the possible health risks and adverse side effects of its Amor Vie therapy, according to the order issued by the Davidson County Circuit Court. The company runs a clinic in Memphis at 1790 Kirby Parkway. The order comes after the Tennessee Attorney General's office filed suit Monday, alleging the company violated the Consumer Protection Act by making a series of false and unsubstantiated claims about the benefits, efficacy, safety and side effects of its "bio-identical" hormone replacement therapy. The company has denied similar allegations in the past, according to the Tennessee Attorney General's office. The company's website says inadequate hormone levels can cause loss of energy, low sex drive, weight gain, depression and more and that most of the symptoms can be treated with its Amor Vie. "We are grateful to the court for this action as this concerns the safety and health of many Tennesseans," Attorney General Bob Cooper … Continue reading

New research on Hormone Replacement Therapy

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

NEW YORK (WABC) -- It was a decade ago many women stopped taking hormone replacement therapy fearful after the federal government pulled the plug on a massive ten year study of Hormone Replacement Therapy. The study linked the hormones to cancer, heart disease, stroke and blood clots. Now new research seems to suggests they may be safe for some women who start taking them soon after they reach menopause. The new study in the British Medical Journal suggests hormone therapy can have benefits for those in early menopause. "What's interesting about this study is it once again brings up the issue is hormone replacement therapy safe for women who are recently postmenopausal," said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum with Lenox Hill Hospital. The study looked at more than 1,000 Danish women between the ages of 45 and 58 in the early stages of menopause. Half were on hormones, half weren't. The women were then tracked six more years after the trial was stopped. Researchers found those who had the hormone therapy were less likely to die, have heart failure, a heart attack or have an increased risk of breast cancer or stroke. Dr. Steinbaum says hormone therapy is something some women need. … Continue reading

Hormone Therapy Reduces Heart Risks, Study Finds

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2012

A new study has found that women who take hormone replacement therapy for 10 years following menopause have significantly reduced risk of heart failure, heart attack, and dying. In addition, those same women are not at any increased risk of cancer, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or stroke. These findings come just weeks after a different study published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology showed that hormone use among postmenopausal women has been declining. Speculation as to the reason for this decline focused on patient and doctor fears based on a 2002 study by the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) that found estrogen/progestin hormone therapy can increase risks of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and breast cancer. The new study, published today in the journal BMJ, throws into question the results from the WHI research. Researchers from Hvidovre Hospital in Denmark looked at 1006 white, healthy Danish women from ages 45 to 58. After a 10-year randomized trial and six years of follow-up, the study authors concluded that the women treated with long term hormone replacement therapy had significantly reduced risk of mortality, heart failure, or heart attack, without any apparent increase of cancer, DVT, or stroke. ABC news quotes Dr. Louise … Continue reading
