Stem cell therapy to lead DOT’s proposed ‘medical tourism’ plan

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2012

The Department of Tourism plans to add another reason for more visitors to come to the country through a soon-to-be drafted medical tourism plan, which highlights the relatively cheap yet world-class health services some of the countrys hospitals have to offer. In this proposed plan, DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez aims to get the countrys medical sector to put its best foot forward by highlighting stem cell therapy as well as other areas of specialization. Medical tourism focuses on some very serious, important areas of healthcare that the world will travel for, Jimenez said during a forum on stem cell science conducted at the Medical City hospital in Pasig City on Tuesday evening. Through promoting world-class medical services in the country, such as some of Philippine hospitals stem cell programs, Jimenez said the DOT aims to draw foreigners into the country who, in his words, yung sasakay sila ng eroplano, tatawid sila ng dagat. (Foreigners) would obviously spend less if they sought care in their own country like the United States or (places in) Europe. So you really have to have a value that will mitigate the cost of that travel. Your service has to be superior, greater value for their … Continue reading

“No, honey, it really is OK”

Oddly enough, sleep research often focuses on individuals, even though most people sleep with a partner, pet or small child. And as anyone who has shared a bed with another living, breathing, snoring, kicking, sighing being can attest, that matters. As a sex researcher, Ive long found it curious that much of our research also focuses on individuals. There are good reasons for this (among others: concerns about biasing research by limiting it to partnered people; the expense of doubling sample size; challenges with data analyses; and difficulty recruiting and retaining partners). Yet, we need to understand the role of partners in peoples sexual experiences. The need for such research is why I was thrilled to come across a recent study of men with premature ejaculation, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, in which the researchers also surveyed some of the mens partners. I was also happy to see this study for personal reasons, as I once dated a wonderful man who experienced PE, and the lessons it taught me about love, sex and how people feel about their bodies were important ones. First, lets talk about PE. As you may suspect, PE is fairly common, experienced by about … Continue reading

Medtronic seeks drug company partner for Alzheimer's tests

Posted: Published on September 19th, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS How much more effective would Alzheimer's medications be if they could travel directly into the brain? Medtronic is hoping to find out, and the Fridley, Minn.-based med-tech giant is looking for partners from the pharmaceutical industry to help. In the same way that Medtronic is working with Eli Lilly & Co. on research into treatment for Parkinson's disease, Medtronic officials say they also are ready to reach out to drug companies developing medications to combat Alzheimer's. Lisa Shafer, director of Medtronic's Central Nervous System drug therapy research and development, said she believes Medtronic's implantable pump technology could help those medications become more effective and have fewer side effects. Shafer said less than 1 percent of intravenous drugs are able to cross what is called the blood-brain barrier, a layer of protection in the vessels within the brain. But if Alzheimer's drugs could be administered directly to the brain actually, to the fluid-filled ventricles within the brain 100 percent of the drug could reach its intended target. That could mean tenfold to hundredfold lower doses, and fewer side effects, than with drugs taken orally or intravenously, Shafer said. And that could save money, too. Medtronic has done what is called … Continue reading

Drugs sold through ‘hidden’ websites

By Cormac OKeeffe Wednesday, September 19, 2012 Irish suppliers of synthetic drugs are buying the substances through a sophisticated encrypted online system, according to a drugs researcher. Tim Bingham said these drugs were "widely available" over the internet and said he expected the scale of the problem to get worse. He said users "didnt have a clue" what was in the product they might be buying from dealers here. His comments come as garda and customs officers continue to investigate the importation of 23kg of synthetic drugs into Waterford City in a controlled delivery operation. A 32-year-old man arres-ted in the city is expected to be charged in relation to the investigation. Garda recovered 18kg of a synthetic drug mix at an apartment in the city on Monday. The haul is a mixture of three different substances PVP, methylone, and flephedrone which mimic the effects of street drugs such as ecstasy, cocaine and amphetamine. It is thought to be the first time PVP has been seized in Ireland. It is understood that in addition to the 18kg seized, a further 5kg was en route in the post. Garda sources said there were reports of the postal system being increasingly used … Continue reading

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2012

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (ACT) (ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that director of business development, Matthew Vincent, Ph.D., will be presenting at Terrapinns Stem Cells USA and Regenerative Medicine Congress, September 20-21 in Boston. Dr. Vincents presentation, Advancing stem cell therapies to the clinic: ACT's three cellular therapy programs, will be given on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 3:15 p.m. EDT. Dr. Vincent will discuss the meaning and significance of the results seen thus far in ACTs three ongoing human clinical trials in the U.S. and E.U. for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD) and Stargardts Macular Dystrophy (SMD). About SMD, Dry AMD and Degenerative Diseases of the Retina Stargardts Macular Dystrophy (SMD) is one of the most common forms of macular degeneration in the world. SMD causes progressive vision loss, usually starting in children between 10 to 20 years of age. Eventually, blindness results from photoreceptor loss associated with degeneration in the pigmented layer of the retina, called the retinal pigment epithelium or RPE cell layer. Degenerative diseases of the retina are among the most common causes of untreatable blindness in the world. As many as thirty million people in the … Continue reading

San Francisco Dentist Follows Stem Cell Research Regarding Craniofacial Tissue Renewal

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Case results published in the journal Cell Transplantation revealed that human craniofacial tissues regenerate faster using stem cells than with traditional bone regeneration therapy. San Francisco dentist Dr. Greg Larson awaits the benefits this research has in store for restorative dentistry treatments. The University of Michigan School of Dentistry, the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Mich., performed research in a dual effort. Clinical trials included 24 participants needing jawbone reconstruction following tooth extraction. Researchers prescribed some participants bone regeneration therapy, while others received ixmyelocel-T cells, developed by Aastrom Biosciences. Aastrom researchers used the bone marrow of participants to create a variety of cell types, including stem cells that would later be implanted into their mouths and jaws. "Patients who received tissue repair cells achieved greater bone density and quicker bone renewal and required less bone grafting during implant procedures when compared to those who underwent traditional guided bone regeneration therapy," according to the U-M press release. U-M School of Dentistry Assistant Professor Darnell Kaigler says the regenerated bone will provide dentists with a stronger foundation when using dental implants. By replacing missing teeth with dental … Continue reading
