Propecia Sexual Side Effects Put Men at Risk for Depression

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

A new, retrospective, study reveals that Propecia, the popular hair loss medication, puts men at risk for depression. Propecia (finasteride 1 mg) belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, or 5-ARIs. Propecia is approved to treat male pattern baldness and works by preventing the conversion of androgen testosterone to DHT, a hormone critical to male sexual performance. In April, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered new warnings for the Propecia label detailing possible long-lasting male sexual side effects associated with the drugs. We recently wrote that another new study reported that sexual side effects that sometimes accompany Propecia use could be long lasting. Propecia sexual side effects often include erectile dysfunction, low libido, trouble having an orgasm, and shrinking and painful genitals. As we reported previously, Merck changed the Propecia label in Europe several years ago to warn that the drug could lead to permanent erectile dysfunction. Until the FDA ordered the April label change, warnings provided to U.S. users of the drug suggested that these problems typically resolve. Now, it seems, that younger men who had taken Propecia and experienced its sexual side effects were also diagnosed with high rates of depressive symptoms; … Continue reading

Synthetic drug users should seek treatment for addiction

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

By CAITLIN TRAYNOR and JOLENE CLEAVER Dispatch Staff Writers Twitter.com/DispatchCaitlin, Twitter.com/DispatchCleaver As with many other highly-addictive substances, treating a dependency on new synthetic drugs is difficult. Major obstacles include most users unwillingness and the health care systems limited resources. In Madison County, despite a growing number of extreme reactions to the use of bath salts and synthetic marijuana, only a few users have participated in treatment, says Jim Yonai, Madison County Mental Health Department Director. Dozens of bath salt users treated in emergency rooms have been referred to the countys drug treatment programs. Only two have actually shown up for help, he says. With multiple cases where bath salts have been a known factor in violent outbursts and aggressive and abusive behavior, follow-up treatment to address the persons dependency on the drug has been identified as an essential service. With any kind of chemical dependency, Yonai says users refuse to seek treatment because they deny they have a problem or they want to continue using. While alcohol and marijuana are the drugs of choice for those who receive treatment in Madison County, bath salts are proving to be a whole new problem. Because of its unregulated manufacturing and the variety … Continue reading

Drugs Help Fox Get Back on TV

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

Michael J. Fox is planning a return to series TV, more than a decade after he left to concentrate on fighting Parkinson's disease. The actor, who first gained fame in the 1980s sitcom "Family Ties" and later headlined "Spin City," will star in a comedy that's in development at Sony Pictures Television for 2013, according to people with knowledge of the project. The people, who lacked authority to publicly discuss the matter, spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The project has drawn strong interest from the major networks, they said. The actor's publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sony declined comment. Fox, 51, who starred in the hit "Back to the Future" movie franchise, is working with Will Gluck, director of the film "Easy A," and writer Sam Laybourne, whose credits include "Cougar Town" and "Arrested Development," the people said. The actor, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, left "Spin City" in 2000 and said he intended to focus on helping find a cure for the disease. He started a foundation, which bears his name, to fund research toward that goal. Although he reduced his workload because of Parkinson's, Fox has made guest appearances … Continue reading

Govt war on drugs hailed a success

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

The government's war on drugs has been hailed as a remarkable success thanks to a significant increase in drug gangs busted, drugs seized, and drug addicts rehabilitated. Somchai: Govt on the right track And the key to success, the Royal Thai Police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) say, is the government's clear policy which has made it easier for law enforcement authorities to take action. Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew said he was satisfied with the outcome of the anti-drugs policy implementation in the past year, given the increased the number of drug suspects arrested and addicts rehabilitated. "Regarding these statistics, the war on drugs now is going much better than it was under the previous government. Actually, it is even better than under the Thaksin Shinawatra administration which initiated this policy in 2001," said Pol Gen Adul, who also serves as acting secretary-general of the ONCB. Since Sept 11 last year, when the Yingluck Shinawatra government kicked off its version of the war on drugs, about 340,000 drug cases have been prosecuted, nearly 8% more than in the same period the year before. More than 330,000 suspects have been arrested, a 14% … Continue reading

Stroke-recovery patient says he's lucky damage wasn't worse

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

His wife, Maggie, had dropped him off at a doctor's appointment, and it was something about his hand. His cellphone kept slipping from his left hand. Later, a piece of paper was slipping, as well. He wasn't feeling well. "I remember walking downstairs going through the security there at the BOK, there was a young lady that I worked with," says Mellott, 63. "I said something to her, and suddenly my phone fell and it was all in parts." "She said, 'What's going on, Joe?' " Mellott recalls. If a stroke is real bad, he said, it comes on suddenly, and you know what it is. But if it's minor - like the Transient Ischemic Attack, or mini stroke, that Mellott had unbeknownst to him at some point in the past, recognizing it early and seeking treatment doesn't necessarily come as quickly. Early recognition is also difficult if the stroke comes on slowly, like Mellott's case that day in March. He said his speech was a bit slurred afterward and, more significantly, he'd lost a great deal of feeling on the left side of his body. Five months after the stroke, however, Mellott and his wife are in Tulsa on … Continue reading

Black Stroke Survivors Face Greater Risk From High Blood Pressure

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

Study Highlights: EMBARGOED UNTIL 3 pm CT/4 pm ET, Thursday, August 16, 2012 DALLAS, Aug. 16, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Black people who survived strokes caused by bleeding in the brain were more likely than whites to have high blood pressure a year later -- increasing their risk of another stroke, according to a study in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. The study examined racial and ethnic differences in these strokes, called intracranial hemorrhage or ICH. They account for only 10 percent of all strokes but have a death rate of about 40 percent in the first month, much higher than other types of stroke. High blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor associated with bleeding stroke. "If you have already had a stroke, blood pressure treatment can reduce your chance of having another stroke by between 25 and 50 percent," said Darin B. Zahuranec, M.D., M.S., lead author of the study and assistant professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center in Ann Arbor. However, more than half of patients in the study still had high blood pressure a year after the stroke, despite taking one or more anti-hypertensive medications. There were no significant … Continue reading

Stroke victim gets aid

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2012

THE public has come forward and generously donated to stroke victim Haramaini Mohd Idris to undergo treatment. In a little over a month, good Samaritans from all over the country including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan and Penang, has helped raise a total of RM5,060 for the 59-year-old former political writer and campaign coordinator. However, the amount raised is insufficient. Haramaini needs another RM7,000 as up front payment of three months rental for a machine to undergo peritoneal dialysis. Ipoh Barat Barisian Nasional community service bureau chief Dr Cheng Wei Yee said the machine, which costs about RM4,000 to rent per month, would help Haramaini a lot. He currently relies on manual peritoneal dialysis, which has to be carried out five times a day. Each session takes about an hour and it is taking a toll on Haramainis poor state of health, Dr Cheng said after visiting Haramaini at his home in Pangsapuri Seri Kepayang in Ipoh. The frequent dialysis sessions means that Haramaini had no chance to leave home. His wife Pazian Shaharum, 57, said the manual process was stressful as it required Haramaini to shake his body continuously by moving the legs during each session to help … Continue reading
