Fears over 'stem cell tourism'

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

A GROWING number of overseas clinics touting stem cell therapy for conditions ranging from sexual disorders to HIV are targeting Australia, where such treatments are restricted. Australian scientists have raised concerns about so-called ''stem cell tourism'', saying many of the treatments offered are unproven, untested and potentially deadly. The Swiss firm Fetal Cell Technologies International has been advertising in Australia since last year and Emcell, based in Ukraine, started promoting its services last month. It is estimated as many as 200 Australians have travelled overseas for the therapy. The secretary for science policy at the Australian Academy of Science, Bob Williamson, said he empathised with the desperation of seriously ill people but warned against the unproven therapies, which can cost up to $60,000. Advertisement ''The therapies are almost all untested and unproven and sometimes they have killed people,'' Professor Williamson said. The Sun-Herald's calls to Emcell's Melbourne office were not returned. Stem Cells Australia's Megan Munsie, who is conducting a study into stem cell tourism with Monash University, said many people she interviewed were unaware of the risks of therapy overseas. ''We're not talking about rubbing something into your skin or taking a capsule, we are talking about often a … Continue reading

Of junk ads and RH opponents

At Large By: Rina Jimenez-David Philippine Daily Inquirer I see them each time I open my junk mail inbox: online ads asking if I want my penis enlarged. Apparently, these ad makers and penis enlargement marketers arent aware that rina is the name of a woman, at least in this country. Or they simply target vulnerable-looking addresses in hopes of getting at least one bite. While checking my junk mail just now, I decided to write down some of the more exciting come-ons that tempt me daily. Penis growth promo is a frequent heading, so is get bigger with sample. Last more than an hour today is the enticing lead of one message, while another promises that the buyer would impress all in the locker room. Be master of the bed, proclaims another message; another promises the greatest shags of all. Topping the list is this graphic promo: cuum much longer with express herbals. Where are the junk sex ads for women? Why arent business people busying themselves with products to enhance womens sex lives? Do they even know women have sex lives? Apparently, while they believe that men would be perfectly willing to part with their hard-earned money for … Continue reading

Merritt's journey started when he won gold in Beijing four years ago before his career was put on hold when he tested positive to a banned steroid. Advertisement He said the steroid was in a penis enlargement pill he had taken. As for his recent hamstring injury, Merritt said: "I've had countless hours of treatment from 8am to about 10pm.. "I hurt it in my last race in Monaco. I thought I could come out and make my way through. I'm still young and I have a long career ahead. I'm going to rest it and get ready for the world championships. "It's Olympic year, it's what you want to get to. I had an undefeated season, … Continue reading

08/04/2012 10:55 CHINA - ASIA HRW: torture and denial of rights for drug addicts locked up in camps in Asia Hundreds of thousands of people in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos held without trial, and victims of torture and violence. In the name of a supposed "health care" they are subjected to forced labor and abuse. The structures built and maintained with money from donor countries and UN agencies. Beijing (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Hundreds of thousands of people identified as drug users in China and across Southeast Asia are held without due process in centers where they may be subjected to torture, and physical and sexual violence in the name of "treatment". The charge is contained in a 23-page Human Rights Watch (HRW), recent report titled " Torture in the Name of Treatment: Human Rights Abuses in Vietnam, China, Cambodia, and Lao PDR." These centers, added the expert organization based in New York (United States), have received financial support and funds from donor countries and UN agencies, but the centers systematically deny people rights to effective HIV and drug dependency treatment, and have ignored forced labor and abuse. The HRW document shows that more than 350 thousand persons, identified … Continue reading

Drugs destroying friendships, marriages and lives

Dancing at Mambo Night at Zouk. By Shaffiq Alkhatib and Eunice Toh The New Paper Saturday, Aug 04, 2012 As a self-confessed health freak, he takes great pains to look his best by exercising regularly and watching his diet. But Zack (not his real name) has witnessed people he knew abusing their bodies by consuming illegal drugs. The well-built 30-something Singaporean bachelor who is now based overseas said he used to be a party animal. Despite his hard partying ways, he insisted that alcohol was his only poison. But he has seen his friends abuse Ecstasy, ketamine and methamphetamine, also known as Ice, which has in recent years, become a popular party drug. Zack, who works in marketing, said that he started partying in the late 90s. That was when he first saw an Ecstasy pill. He told The New Paper over the phone last week: "I was having pre-party drinks at a friend's place when one of the guests took out some multi-coloured pills and started distributing them to the others. "I knew it was Ecstasy as I had read about it before. He offered me one and I refused. I was tempted to try but I decided not … Continue reading

Diet drugs vs. Healthier lifestyle

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2012

As expected, the FDA recently announced approval of a second drug for obesity within a month, Vivus Qnexa, now renamed Qsymia. This approval is less of a surprise, as the data appeared somewhat stronger than that for Arenas lorcaserin (Belviq). What was rather curious is that USA Today broke news of the drugs approval before the FDA had announced their decision. The FDA is responding to the growing crisis of obesity. As noted in my post, A Glut of Obesity Drugs? the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has established that more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese, defined as having a Body-Mass Index of > 30. In the U.S. alone, 78 million U.S. adults are obese; another 34% of adults are overweight > 25-29. So 70% of US adults have a problem with weight. This results in an estimated 300,000 deaths per year. And the burden of obesity is increasing, expected to rise to 42% by 2030, with an additional 11% prevalence of severe obesity (BMI >40, or ~80+ lbs overweight). Obesity is the second cause of preventable deaths, after smoking. The costs of obesity are also staggering, and may be as high as $147 … Continue reading
