Bayonne pharmacy tech charged with stealing prescription drugs, police say

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2012

BAYONNE After receiving a tip earlier in the day, Bayonne police arrested Friday a town resident and pharmacy technician who admitted to stealing more than 2,000 Oxycontin pills over a six-month period, officials said today. Mena Mekhael, 21, of Lord Avenue, was arrested as he was leaving the Jerry's Drug & Surgical Supply at 455 Broadway near West 21st Street, at 6:45 p.m. Friday, police said. He was hit with a slew of drug charges, including theft of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), possession of CDS Oxycontin, possession of CDS Xanax, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, and possession of marijuana under 50 grams, police said. The store's head pharmacist reported to police Friday morning that 2,119 Oxycontin pills were missing from the pharmacy's inventory, Bayonne Acting Police Chief Ralph Scianni said. When police arrested Mekhael he was carrying 20 Oxycontin pills and 17 Xanax pills in his pockets, Scianni said, adding that a search of Mekhael's car turned up six more Oxycontin pills and four more Xanax pills, as well as a bag of marijuana. During questioning, Mekhael admitted to stealing over 2,000 pills since he started working at the pharmacy in December and using the profits to … Continue reading

Sound Off! (June 3)

So there is a little smoke in the air. You can thank the Forest Service, the BLM, and all the tree huggers, lizard lovers, wolf lovers and the spotted owl freaks. They don't want logging, grazing or roads. Nature started the fire. Let nature take its course and let it burn itself out. What's a little smoke? This whole wilderness thing is really a big problem and you can see the results of forest mismanagement and wilderness mismanagement in the Gila. That place is burning up because they would not allow logging or grazing or controlled burns or any access. The fire could have been stopped but there was no access to the area where the lightning hit. Airline fuel and manpower that Obama uses to gallivant around the country should instead best be used to put out the Gila Forest fire. We need more red light cameras and we need to hook up the ones that we have. The people running red lights are dangerous and they are breaking the law and if they are caught on camera, why shouldn't they pay? Please do something about the weather page for the air quality. For the past several days you … Continue reading

Roche ‘Smart Bomb’ Cancer Drug Delays Growth of Breast Tumors

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2012

By Naomi Kresge and Robert Langreth - 2012-06-03T12:36:19Z An experimental breast cancer drug from Roche Holding AG (ROG) that carries chemotherapy directly into malignant cells while bypassing healthy ones delayed tumors longer and with fewer side effects than an established therapy. The treatment, combining Roches Herceptin with an older chemotherapy medicine, delayed progression of tumors 3.2 months longer than GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK)s Tykerb with chemotherapy in women with advanced disease. The data is being reported today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago. More patients on the drug, dubbed T-DM1, were alive after two years, though the difference fell short of statistical significance. Still, the results are the first proof that using an antibody to deliver a toxic dose of chemotherapy into a solid tumor can work, said Kimberly Blackwell, a study author and professor of medicine at Duke University, in an interview. It is fantastic data, said Shanu Modi, a breast cancer oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who was not involved in the current trial. If approved, it is going to be rapidly taken up by the oncology community. For sure, I will be using a lot of it. Roche, based in … Continue reading

Mistakes by Franck's Pharmacy put spotlight on FDA's limited oversight of compounding

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2012

By Carlos E. Medina Correspondent The Federal Drug Administration, which is tasked with ensuring the safety of drugs in the nation, has limited oversight over compounding pharmacies like Franck's because of a 74-year-old law that allows pharmacists to compound, or create unique variations of existing drugs for patients. But that law, and the FDA's lack of authority over the practice of compounding, may draw new scrutiny in the wake of a well-publicized mistake at Franck's that killed two dozen prized polo ponies in 2009 and the production of contaminated solutions that reportedly damaged the vision of 33 eye surgery patients in recent months. Compounding pharmacies make medications and other medical preparations from scratch. They cannot make straight copies of commercially available medications and can only make medications when they are ordered by a doctor. These pharmacies fine tune drugs to a patient's need, whether that means creating a specific dosage not offered by a manufacturer or a liquid form of a drug only available in pill form. Historically, compounding was the way most people got their prescription medicines. As recently as the 1960s pharmacists routinely ground and mixed compounds in their stores to make the medicines prescribed by local doctors. … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: Cholesterol drug saps sex drive

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2012

Q: I am a very active Army physical-training instructor. I am 45 years old and have always had a great sex drive until I started taking Crestor six months ago to lower my cholesterol. My sex drive has totally disappeared. I am unable to maintain an erection and feel tired all the time. It has been causing me a great deal of stress and anguish. Is Crestor causing my erectile dysfunction and libido problems? A: Sexual side effects have been reported with some statins, such as lovastatin, pitavastatin (Livalo) and simvastatin. The official prescribing information for Crestor, however, makes no mention of low libido or erectile dysfunction. There is reason to believe that all statins may have a negative impact on sexual function by lowering testosterone levels (Journal of Sexual Medicine, April 2010). Cholesterol is a building block for testosterone, so it is not surprising that cholesterol-lowering drugs might have an impact on this hormone. Results from French research suggest that such drugs may trigger or worsen erectile dysfunction (Drug Safety, July 2009). Ask your doctor if there's another way to control cholesterol. If not, a test for testosterone or an ED drug might be helpful. Q: To prevent foot … Continue reading

STROKE MONTH REPORT: Knowing the 9-1-1 on stroke is key to saving lives and preventing disability for tens of thousands of stroke patients OTTAWA, June 1, 2012 /CNW/ - On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Stroke Network release their Stroke Month Report. June is Stroke month and during this time the Heart and Stroke Foundation is urging Canadians to have the "S-Talk" - a digital campaign encouraging all Canadians to talk to their families and friends about the stroke warning signs and the importance of fast action. This year, Canadian Stroke Network data - collected from about 10,000 patient charts at 295 hospitals across Canada - looks at which groups take the longest to arrive at hospital emergency departments - and how many Canadians are not meeting the 3-hour treatment target for clot-busting drugs or other interventions that can minimize - or even erase - the devastating effects of stroke. New Heart and Stroke Foundation polling takes a look at awareness levels and what we can do to turn the tide on stroke - giving Canadians tools to take control, prevent stroke, and gain quality years of life. Local stroke spokespeople and survivors … Continue reading

Swiss Scientists Rewire Injured Spinal Cords, Paralyzed Rats Walk Again

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2012

[Credit: EPFL]Here at GeekTech, we've seen lots of contraptions to help the disabled regain some of their mobility. Now, a group of Swiss scientists from the cole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL) have found a way to rewire the spinal cord of rats after a paralyzing injury. This rat (pictured above) was just paralyzed a few weeks prior and is now running on a treadmill. The team accomplished this impressive medical feat with an extensive treatment of electro-chemical therapy and training with the help of a robotic harness. The treatment starts with a round of injections that contain a chemical solution of monoamine agonists to rouse the dormant spinal cord nerves. These chemicals are used to replace the neurotransmitters (dopamine, adrenaline, and serotonin receptors) that normally triggered the brainstem. Once the chemicals have excited the spinal cord neurons, the scientists start electrically stimulating the spinal cord with implanted electrodes. This is done to retrain the rats nervous system to use it lower limbs again--it's much like training brain control, but with a physiological component. The rats were first tested on a moving treadmill where they instinctively walked forward with their front legs and previously paralyzed hind limbs. The scientist eventually … Continue reading

Walking with hope

Moving on: Jason Ellery (left), Matthew Pierri and Josh Wood believe they can recover further. Photo: Luis Enrique Ascui Patients with spinal cord injuries are challenging mainstream treatments in their bid to recover use of their paralysed limbs. Quadriplegic Matthew Pierri reports. IN THE early morning of June 17, 2007, I had a nightmare. I was strapped to a bed in a dark room, paralysed below my chest. I struggled in silence until a lady appeared. She sighed and told me to relax, asking me if I knew where I was; if I knew what had happened. I didn't answer, I just tried to wake up. You never forget the moment you realise you're already awake. People in wheelchairs used to scare me. I would always keep clear, secretly afraid that I might catch their illness. I knew nothing about spinal cord injuries or the people who suffered them. Until I had one. Advertisement: Story continues below A football accident left me stranded in a world I didn't understand, or even know existed. A world I want to get out of. Even if I'm told I never will. As far as catastrophic injuries go, there are few worse than those … Continue reading

New genetic factor associated with lean diabetics identified

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2012

Washington, June 2 : Lean type 2 diabetes patients have a larger genetic disposition to the disease as compared to their obese counterparts, a new study has proved. Type 2 diabetes is popularly associated with obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. However, just as there are obese people without type 2 diabetes, there are lean people with the disease. It has long been hypothesised that type 2 diabetes in lean people is more "genetically driven". The study, from a research team led by the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD), University of Exeter, has also identified a new genetic factor associated only with lean diabetes sufferers. Using genetic data from genome-wide association studies, the research team tested genetic markers across the genome in approximately 5,000 lean patients with type 2 diabetes, 13,000 obese patients with the disease and 75,000 healthy controls. The team found differences in genetic enrichment between lean and obese cases, which support the hypothesis that lean diabetes sufferers have a greater genetic predisposition to the disease. This is in contrast to obese patients with type 2 diabetes, where factors other than type 2 diabetes genes are more likely to be responsible. In addition, genetic variants near the … Continue reading
