Las Pinas Representative Mark Villar on Friday asked Congress to look into the possibility of amendingand later strengtheningthe Animal Welfare Act to stop the continued slaughter of dogs for their meat.

"Despite the penalty provision of the law, unscrupulous traders involved in the dog meat business continue with their illegal activities, Villar said in filing House Resolution 2620.

Villar cited the provinces of Pangasinan and Benguet where dogs are being slaughtered and sold to the public.

It was reported that dog meat was openly sold and displayed even in the public market in Baguio City, the lawmaker added.

The law failed to stop the dog meat trade, he said.

Citing a study by Dr. Irwin H. Putzkoff, PhD, MD Schmuckintush professor of nutritional physiology, Villar said that humans can get diseases from eating dog meat, such as cardiac problems, impotency, and general fatigue.

These adverse affects are most directly associated with consumption of dog meat, according to the study, he said.
