Krumholz awarded Clinical Research Prize by the American Heart Association – Yale News

Dr. Harlan Krumholz

Dr. Harlan Krumholz 80 B.S., the Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine (cardiology), was awarded the American Heart Associations (AHA) Clinical Research Prize. The prize was awarded during the AHAs Scientific Sessions 2019, which took place Nov. 16-18 in Philadelphia.

Krumholz studies the effectiveness of clinical approaches to the prevention, treatment, and outcome of heart disease, with a focus on under-represented populations. He has directed Yale-New Haven Hospitals Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) since 1995. CORE, a leading national outcomes research center, studies healthcare quality through evaluation projects and targeted studies that aim to improve lives through policy.

He is also co-director of Yales Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program, an interprofessional fellowship that fosters collaboration among future clinical leaders, as well as professor of investigative medicine and of public health (health policy) and a member of the Institute for Social Policy Studies at Yale.

Dr. Robert A. Harrington, president of the American Heart Association who presented the Clinical Research Prize, described Krumholz as a founding leader in the field of outcomes research.

His team has led national improvement initiatives, architected national and international quality measurement assays and strategies, developed platforms for research and clinical care improvement in China, promoted patient-centric approaches to research and clinical care and created strategies and tools to facilitate open science and advance scientific integrity, added Harrington. His group is now focused on harnessing the digital transformation in healthcare to accelerate knowledge generation and facilitate the delivery of care aligned with the needs and preferences of each individual.

Previously, Krumholz was named a Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association in 2011, and in 2013 won the associations Outstanding Achievement award for Quality of Care and Outcomes Research.

He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians. The U.S. government appointed him founding governor of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and he served as a member of the advisory committee to the director of the National Institutes of Health.

Krumholz has published more than 800 articles and written two books. In 2014, the Peoples Republic of China honored the Yale researcher with a Friendship Award, recognizing his collaborative efforts to develop the nations cardiovascular research network.
