Kidney removal, erectile dysfunction link

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

SAN DIEGO, July 31 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers identified a link between patients who undergo complete kidney removal and erectile dysfunction. The study involved 432 patients who underwent surgery for renal (kidney) cell carcinoma. Senior author Dr. Ithaar Derweesh -- associate professor of surgery, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and urologic surgeon at University of California, San Diego Health System -- and colleagues said one group underwent complete removal of the kidney while the other had kidney-sparing surgery. Sexual function was assessed pre- and post-operatively with a sexual health questionnaire known as the International Index of Erectile Function. The study, published online in the British Journal of Urology International, found a dramatic yet delayed effect. Patients who had a total kidney removal were 3.5 times more likely to develop erectile dysfunction approximately six years after surgery, compared to those who had kidney reconstruction. "This is the first study in medical literature to suggest that surgery for kidney removal can negatively impact erectile function while partial kidney removal can protect sexual function," Derweesh said in a statement. Array BioPharma skids on side effects of pain drug

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Array BioPharma tumbled Wednesday after investors became concerned about some side effects of an experimental pain drug, though the drug in the most recent clinical trials appears to work. Array reported results from the mid-stage trial of ARRY-797 after the market closed Tuesday. The company said the drug was better than a placebo at reducing moderate to severe pain caused by osteoarthritis of the knee, and the drug worked about as well as the pain drug oxycodone. However Array said some patients experienced heart side effects that can increase the risk of arrhythmia, a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. One analyst said potential side effects could hurt sales and potentially the company's chances of landing a partnership to market the drug. Array does not have any products on the market, and ARRY-797 is its most advanced drug candidate. Shares of the Boulder, Colo., company dropped 60 cents, or 11.7 percent, to $4.54 in early trading. The four-week trial evaluated ARRY-797 in patients for which non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen did not work. All patients continued taking those drugs during the study in addition to taking ARRY-797, oxycodone, or … Continue reading

MALAYSIA'S leading healthcare provider BP Healthcare Group has rebooted its pharmacy operations to grow it into a core revenue earner with expansion into online sales and more value-added services to increase customer traffic and generate new business. The well-diversified group has two pharmacy enterprises, the first being wholesale BP Pharmacy established in 1995 and the Lovy Pharmacy retail chain launched in February this year that differentiates itself as a modern healthcare partner instead of a typical drug store. "Lovy Pharmacy and BP Pharmacy will be turned into core businesses for the group. There is immense potential for growth and the timing is right because consumers are more health-conscious and with their busier lifestyles these days, they want to enjoy more convenience," said BP Group deputy chairman Chevy Beh, who is also group finance and investment director. MORE people in Bristol are claiming disability benefits because they are addicted to illegal drugs than anywhere else in the country. Government figures show that more than 1,400 people in the city are receiving incapacity benefit or its replacement, employment support allowance, because of their drug problems more than in any other local authority area, Birmingham, Glasgow or Manchester. The government released the data to try to generate support for its controversial shake-up of benefit payments. According to the figures, from the Department for Work and Pensions, drug addiction was the main reason for welfare dependency of 990 incapacity benefit claimants and 420 people receiving ESA. City council bosses said it had been recognised that Bristol had one of the highest numbers of "complex drug users" in Britain. Ministers said the figures showed why the whole benefits system needs to be transformed. But a Bristol charity warned of "marginalising" people with drug problems. Bristol West Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Williams said: "There may well be a lot of people receiving benefits because of drug addiction. But curtailing their benefits isn't going to deal with that." Charlotte Leslie, Conservative MP for Bristol North West, said: "It is obviously bad for everybody … Continue reading

COURT: George Peauafi Palelei. Source: The Courier-Mail A YEAR 12 graduate trafficked drugs to high school leavers during last year's Gold Coast Schoolies festivities to raise money to avoid being evicted from his family home, a court has been told. The Brisbane District Court was told US-born teenager George Peauafi Palelai committed a string of criminal offences between November 9 and 27 last year in the hope of raising money to help out his cash-strapped dad. The court was Palelai, as part of his criminal fundraising enterprise, trafficked marijuana to Schoolies revellers at Surfers Paradise over an eight day period. Palelai, 19, was today handed a two year wholly suspended jail term after pleading guilty to a charge of drug trafficking. Drugs and $1m cash intercepted at Sydney Airport

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

Six men have been charged after police seized drugs and $1 million in cash at Sydney Airport. New South Wales Police Force detectives tipped off the Australian Federal Police and the Custom and Border Protection Service that a group of men was heading to the airport yesterday to fly to Bangladesh. Four men were stopped and searched by officials at the airport yesterday morning, allegedly uncovering a quantity of steroids and just under $1 million in cash. The men, aged between 25 and 56, have all been charged with Commonwealth proceeds of crime offences and possession of a restricted substance. They were held in custody overnight, but three of the men were granted bail when they faced court today. State Drug Squad detectives subsequently raided two units in the city's inner west at Ashfield, where they allegedly seized more steroids, another $70,000 in cash and a quantity of the drug ice. Two men arrested at the units, aged 33 and 37, have been charged with supplying a prohibited drug and having goods in custody. They have been released on bail to face court later this month. Drugs 'easier to get in prison'

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

1 August 2012 Last updated at 11:50 ET A drug addict facing cannabis and amphetamine charges is more likely to gain access to new supplies in jail than outside, the High Court has heard. Sean Kelly's barrister played down the chances of him overcoming his habit while on remand at Maghaberry Prison. The 25-year-old, of The Old Fort, Londonderry, faces charges of possessing Class B drugs and two counts of possession with intent to supply. He was arrested after police searched his home on 25 July. Officers found four grams of herbal cannabis and 180 grams of suspected amphetamines with an estimated street value of between 1,800 and 5,400, according to the prosecution. The range in potential valuation was due to some batches of speed currently being laced with cocaine, a judge was told. Digital scales, packaging and cash were also seized during the swoop. Kelly, who was said to be clearly under the influence of drugs when police entered, denied any involvement in selling or supplying drugs. Opposing his bail application, Kate McKay, prosecuting, told the court he claimed to be a drug addict who took between 18-24 grams of speed daily. Combining breast cancer drugs effective

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

Published: Aug. 2, 2012 at 2:00 AM CHICAGO, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Combining two drugs normally given as single agents significantly extended the lives of women with metastatic breast cancer, U.S. researchers say. Dr. Kathy Albain, a breast cancer specialist at Loyola University Medical Center near Chicago, and colleagues found women who initially took the drugs anastrozole and fulvestrant together at the same time lived more than six months longer than women who took anastrozole alone, with fulvestrant given later when the disease progressed. "This study is the first to show that combination hormonal therapy alone without chemotherapy improves survival in advanced breast cancer," Albain said in a statement. "This most likely will change the standard of care for how we treat these patients." First author Dr. Rita Mehta of the University of California at Irvine, said anastrozole, or Arimidex, is a pill that is taken daily -- a class of medications called aromatase inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of estrogen the body makes -- estrogen fuels breast cancer. Fulvestrant, or Faslodex, is given by injection and binds to estrogen receptors, blocking the effect estrogen has on cancer cells, Mehta said. The study involved 707 post-menopausal women who … Continue reading

Marra's Pharmacy in Cohoes to pay $268k Medicaid penalty

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

COHOES A family-owned pharmacy run by the Cohoes mayor has agreed to pay $268,038 to the state of New York to settle a penalty levied by the Health Department's Office of Medicaid Inspector General. The settlement is a result of a 2009 state audit that uncovered bookkeeping errors in the Medicaid records at Marra's Pharmacy. The state initially sought $1.46 million from the Remsen Street pharmacy that's headed by Mayor John T. McDonald III, who is a licensed pharmacist. But under a settlement reached this week, the pharmacy agreed to the reduced settlement amount. The agreement calls for weekly deductions of $1,167 from the pharmacy's Medicaid payments it receives from the state. McDonald went to court last year to challenge the proposed $1.46 million levy, which he said would have crippled the family-run business that's been a fixture in Cohoes for generations. John McDonald said he decided recently to settle the case rather than go forward with a hearing before a state administrative judge. Had he lost, the state may have sought a penalty of up to twice the $1.46 million levy. McDonald said he'd already spent about $100,000 in legal fees and the reduced penalty will allow his family's … Continue reading
